So hungover this morning I accidently wore two different shoes (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I tried many times after and it was always the same. When I was in Amsterdam, I bought some low THC stuff and was fine after 1-2 hits, but anything more than that and it was bad news. Took one hit of some Cannabis Cup winning stuff and that was game over. Haven't tried since.
I think it happens to everyone initially before the mellow sets in. Happens to me too.

Didn't used to. I would do 3 milky 2-foot bong rips for breakfast. Maybe the newer strains with the increased THC content were too much. The mellow never sets in, I just feel like #### for an hour and then am sober again. I just stick to the occasional beer or 12 these days.

I'm only used to newer stuff. Don't know what you guys were smoking during Nam

If I had barely passed the ASVAB I would understand but I nearly aced the thing. I have to take 2 weeks of remedial HS work for nothing and people who got scores like 77 are going to be managing our nuclear arsenal?

f that. If you get above a 90 you should get a pass on that if you have a GED. They even show you a pic of a flaring tool and ask you what it is and I knew. Almost nobody knows what a flaring tool is!
Dude, 2-weeks is like nothing. Seems like you were looking for some kind of excuse not to do it.

1.) Success sometimes requires doing things you don't want / don't think you should.

2.) You should never compare yourself to other people. All our situations are different and none of them are relevant to your situation.

You have to worry about being the best you that you can be. Doesn't matter what anyone else is doing.

Yes ego was a part of it of course. Everyone has an ego about certain things. I wish they had been up front about that before I went through the process.

i also lost faith in them because why are they making me do this if they want "the best and brightest? Not everyone can complete a HS diploma. I was working since I was 14 because my mother was an unemployed alcoholic most of my life. I couldn't manage school and work by the time I was 16. It's just another punishment for being poor.

it wasn't a good look for the military from my perspective
Yeah, now you are just being annoying.  I'm out.

Military and being up front do not go hand in hand. People that enlist need to know that from the start, otherwise they are setting themselves up for misery. One of my son's friends (along with a bunch of other Marines ) had their MOS changed at the end of boot camp. Imagine you went through 3 weeks of hell only to have them tell you you are no longer you going to be X, now you're Z. And you have no desire to be a Z. They put you where they need you. Itherwise everyone would want to be a General and nobody would want to be a grunt.

Join the Military because you want to serve your country, and maybe get to see the world. It's not all about you.

How ironic. When the RIP Fin thread was bumped and I saw the usual messing around from long before I thought of RnR and wondered.. People don't get it. You know someone is really struggling, on the edge- and you still choose to have "fun" with them. Sure he's joining in and saying it's cool, but really inside, it's not. People need to knock the #### off with people who have serious struggles no matter what they say. There is no re-do once the person is gone. /rant

Wish you the best RnR. It may not be a bad idea to take a break from this board and concentrate on getting help. xxx
Valid point. But, for the most part, we are a group of strangers that gather in the FFA and share our thoughts and opinions. We don't really know each other and what each other are dealing with.

It shouldn't just be somebody that throws out "I am having suicidal thoughts" that makes people ease up on them. We only know what others are dealing with if they tell us.

The sad part is almost all of the people that have these thoughts never say anything about it to anyone. They certainly don't post about it on a message board. The first time those close to them find out about what they are dealing with occurs, sadly, when they make their first suicide attempt.

So,maybe as a general rule, we shouldn't be so quick to swarm anybody here. Some, like the OP, stand and blast back and give as good as they get. While others will retreat and not engage with the people "attacking" them. It doesn't mean that both aren't feeling and dealing with similar pain.

If someone is feeling very desperate it should be taken seriously. It seems to me OP sees this place as more than just an anonymous message board. Somewhere he posted he was upset because something an fbg said or it was he made a fbg upset and was upset. It's in this thread and I don't have the energy to go through this thing right now. Many people who are alone/lonely really live in the message board world and take what the members say to heart. This is dangerous and for this OP, it's obvious you could be playing with fire. It doesn't take much to go over the edge when you feel picked on or made fun of. Of course he's not going to say anything and just go along with it, but it doesn't mean he's doing fine and ok to continue on. The problem with message boards is sometimes we can forget there is a human reading what you write. It's so easy to type and hit send and it's done. While we may be able to just say "whatever" to something "funny" we need to remember that people who are struggling, and OP is, cannot. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Hate reading those RIP threads when someone decides their time has come..

I'm sure I could memorize a few dozen popular drinks from a cocktail book.

they probably wouldn't throw me anything too crazy out of left field.
I don't know if you already found anything, but here are a couple easy links. One for making drinks, and a basic bartender guide that might help you with a little  knowledge base. Quick reads with tips/recipes. Good luck, man.

You should take your updated title advice and actually go back to the drawing board. Yes, it's not where you can make immediate money but with your talent it shouldn't be something you abandon for years at a time. It's taken me nearly 10 years to start reaping the benefits of all the hard work I put into voiceovers all while working another job. Do what you can to make money but keep working with your strengths with a long term goal in mind.

What do you want to do?

Work towards that.

Could boot camp really be only three weeks now?

How does one go about becoming an actor? I know it probably sounds ridiculous to think about it at 33 but I look substantially younger than I am and I'm really good at it. It's been a life long dream I've just often been too scared or too busy with other things to pursue it.

Can one just go to a talent agency and give them a percentage once they get you gigs? Even just starting as an extra I hear they make $100 a day and get free food. I hear there is acting oppurtunity in almost every big city and one doesn't necessarily have to move to Cali to get the ball rolling.

Anyone with knowledge of the industry?

I have no knowledge of the "industry" Rok, but I was very active in "drama" during my high school and college days. My greatest claim to fame came in a few radio commercials and local acting groups.

Thus, I would recommend first contacting local amateur acting groups. In my area, that would include things like Shakespeare in the Park, etc..  They often have open auditions, in my experience, and if one does not immediately gain an acting role, they often offer stage crew roles. This is a good way to get "inside", network and learn ways to improve ones craft.

Time spent here, could lead to the "industry" in some form if one is dedicated, talented and lucky. I missed on at least one variable.  But, the experience was very much worth it.

Give it a go. I think you would have much to offer if your "in person" creativity matches your online creativity here.

Good luck.

Is there a way of doing it by avoiding theater altogether? Especially Shakespeare. I just want to do TV or film.

Probably, but that is not a path I ever traveled. Most "pros" as least have some resume, photo/video portfolio and other items to display past work and/or ability .

But, there are many local non-Shakespeare theaters. Also, if you have a video camera, you could put together some scene work on your own to display your ability and then present it to an agent. When I was doing this sort of thing (80's-90's) this option was not as easy. Thus, I may be behind the times on what it takes to get an agent's interest.

I don't know why people are getting on my case about the military.
I was getting on your case, I was pointing out that military life isn't what people expect. Once you enlist you become government property. They have their own set of rules and they like to change them all the time. (Without notice)

I was hoping it was going to be like that scene in Borat. Have you read a few lines and see if there is anything there to work with.

What else can you do if your completely green?

Apprentice.

Find some actor/actress and ask to do anything they need for a "Rok bottom price" in exchange for instruction and connections.

It was a desperation move at the time. I had absolutely no other desire to serve other than financial difficulties at the time.

Catskills/Summer Stock/Borscht Belt

if you are musically inclined, all the better

I understand. Lots of people join the Military for different reasons. But it's not like working for any other company. You lose certain rights. Two week delay to make sure you and they are satisfied you can do the job is not unreasonable.

My son is currently sitting in a barracks in Virginia waiting for his MOS school to start. It's backed up until August. Not his choice, but he has no say so in the matter.

Is this a thing or did you make it up?
I made up the, "Rok bottom price", but otherwise, I have witnessed this relationship in real life. However, I must note, the financial rewards at the beginning are usually not livable wages.

Also note, I am in Louisville, KY...not LA, NY, etc....thus, I am already dealing with the "minor leagues".

Three month for the Marines AFAIK.  Much shorter for all the other services.
Yeah, 13 weeks for Marine boot. Plus 4 weeks for combat training. Then MOS school.

I think the others are 8 weeks. My son said they are looking at making all branches go through the same boot camp. Not sure where he heard that.

I am pretty far from the catskills
ever hear of Johnny Castle?

yeah, doubt that kid was from/near the Catskills (sounded a bit Southern to me) ... anyways, he made a go of it up there.

"if the mountain won't come to Johnny, Johnny will come to the mountain"

I broke my foot so I ended up staying 17 weeks in boot camp.  Although, I did climb Mount Mother####er with said broken foot before they sent me to the Medical Platoon.

For a server/bartender job tie is overdressed and says, "I don't understand this industry."

Button down shirt, some kind of pants that aren't jeans, and "I'm really flexible" as far as hours go will get you there.
It wasn't the outfit that was the issue....

I see a lot of server ads asking to send in a resume and recent photo. Safe to assume that means they are only looking for women?

Now ya got both a photo/video for the rubes and a photo/video for the agents.

Win/win.

Plus, you get to be De Niro!

And if you REALLY want to set yourself above the rabble...

..add a Dong!
