The physicals are done, supposedly Bedard's in Seattle, all reports are that the announcement will come "this day", but still nothing official. This can't be Angelos holding things up, can it?

The Orioles biggest problems during the Angelos years is that they do things on their own pace. It is the dragging everything out that keeps free agents going elsewhere, causes Oriole free agents to get frustrated and insulted causing them to leave, and keeps teams from wanting to deal with the Orioles in trades. (Well that and Angelos falsely believing that his stopping of the '96 "giving up on the season" trade deadline deal, among others proved to be correct.)

Bedard is finally in Seattle taking his physical and the trade is expected to be finalized at the earliest tomorrow afternoon. The O's are getting ripped by the Sun and other local newspapers about how long this is taking - they aren't just a joke outside of Baltimore, but there as well. Brian Roberts is rumored to be moving soon too, I wonder if that will take this long.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that "the Erik Bedard trade finally is official."

Bedard took and apparently passed his physical Thursday, so an official announcement should be coming shortly. Seattle will acquire Bedard in exchange for Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio.

Bedard should put up amazing numbers in that park.

It was a hefty price to pay, but with Oakland and Texas in decline, Seattle had to do what it could to get a chance at the brass ring now.

Seattle will definitely challenge the Angels this year and next. Orioles give 17 free wins to the Yankees and Red Sox. Awesome. :o

Yeah it was, especially for a "rental" player.

Orioles could be a 65 win team at best this season. Capella should be happy, his Rays will be out of the AL East cellar for the first time in history (or at least a loooooong time.)

It will be the 2nd time if they avoid last this year.85-77 for the Rays this year, mark it down :hifive:

Finally a smart move by the Orioles.

Bedard is an unbelievable pitcher, but the Orioles were going nowhere, even with him on the roster.

65 would be a miracle. I'd say more like 55 or even 50 would be about right. The Rays should be close to .500 as should the Jays so Baltimore is in huge trouble. They got a lot of talent back though and the Tejada trade was decent as well. At least they finally faced reality and now can start a new era.

Don't know why you say "rental" player. Bedard is eligible for salary arbitration (he asked for $8 million, Orioles offered $6 million), and Seattle will inherit whatever that amount is for this year and have him under contractual control for two more seasons.Since Bavasi has never gone to a hearing with one of his players, they may well settle this year if not a long term contract before the scheduled hearing.

Even if they don't agree to a long term deal, Bedard is not eligible for free agency until after the 2009 season. He is not a rental player at all.

Agree here. The Orioles need to build up the farm and have begun to do so with the Bedard deal, and to a lesser extent with the Tejada deal. They just need to deal Brian Roberts and the implosion will be complete. Wouldn't hurt to just outright release Aubrey Huff and Jay Gibbons.

Javy Lopez could still go too. The only untouchable on the team right now is Nick Markakis.

Do you mean Ramon Hernandez? Javy Lopez is back with the Braves.Yep, Markakis is really the only untouchable on the ML roster. They really need to restock that farm system. I know they signed that catcher from Ga Tech, he should be ready in a couple.

Yeah, I mean Hernandez. Brain fart early on a Sunday morning. It's hard to keep the free agent Latino catchers that the O's have wasted money on seperate. Bring back Andy Etchebarren. There was a catcher who's name I could remember. ;)
