Sochi City Hall Orders Killing of Stray Dogs (1 Viewer)

2.7 million dogs and cats are killed in America a year. That is down from the 12-20 million that were killed in the 1970's. Obviously, America is a richer and more advanced country technologically than Russia. So the policies that the humane society and others have put into place, have helped these numbers tremendously.

But let's not act as if the Russians are horrible monsters for killing dogs. Their problem is that they don't have a good program to fix the problem, which is not surprising, as the country has been through massive changes over the past 20 years.

Funny quote in that article from an "animal activist":

"Two killers from that company work for the city to kill 300 dogs a month."

So I suppose she thinks that all those that work at pounds and shelters are killers?

If I lived in the city, I wouldn't want a ton of stray dogs running around either, especially ones that bite kids and are constantly scrounging for food. Well maybe we should do something with bums too.

Atlanta reportedly rounded up all the bums and gave them free one-way tickets to other surrounding cities.

I'm sure she does, and technically she is correct.

you do realize we do the same thing, right?
Excellent point. In the case of the county shelters, animals are kept for a period of time to give them a chance to be adopted, but really that's just to make people feel better. Most of them are euthanized sooner or later, usually within 1-2 weeks depending on available space. In a lot of countries, an animal shelter where strays are fed and given medical treatment would be seen as a luxury.

I do think Sochi was a horrible choice to host these Olympics for other reasons though.

You aren't going to find a more self-appointed, holier-than-thou bunch than "animal activists". Don't even try to look for reason at work with that crowd.

I'd like to think in the US when we're killing off dogs that aren't adopted via shelters, that when they're killed it's at least in a more humane way than this (taken from the article):

Shooting stray dogs has been common practice in many Russian regions despite activists' efforts to push for more humane ways to deal with the issue.
If Basya Services is just circling around the area where the games will be hosted, haphazardly gathering stray dogs ,and unloading clips into them without a chance for adoption because they're hosting the Olympics (which they've had ample time within which to get this under control), that I'd have a problem with.

It's not a clip, it's a MAGAZINE.

BTW, I think it's great that Sochi finally thought about handling this problem the week that the games start. That's good planning right there, Russian style!

Firing squad is still an approved method of execution for humans in many countries including several states in the US until very recently.

You dont like america, we get it....
unfortunately, i know how things work and don't live in a protected bubble ready to be offended by anything and everything at a moments notice.
If you want to justify people walking around, lining up dogs and killing them then turn around and somehow justify in your twisted mind then good for you. Im not buying what you are selling today bubble boy...

In Soviet Russia, you shoot dog like deer.

FWIW, I have zero problem extinguishing an over run of stray dogs without homes. It's say, but stray dogs are incredibly dangerous and the cost to collect and adopt out is likely too much. Killing in the streets seems a bit extreme though.

As a matter of fact I do. 90% adopt rate here locally. Which is well above the 0% that appears to be Sochi.
:lmao:

No there's not.
I'll bet you $1M. You up for it? Data is submitted officially to the state.

"We are an open admission shelter caring for over 2,000 animals each year. Our adoption rate for healthy, adoptable animals is over 98%."

When you include all, not just the healthy/adoptable, the rate drops to ~90%.

Well outside of your little mecca of dog heaven, dogs are killed all over the world.
