Spagnuolo hired as Saints new Defensive Coordinator (1 Viewer)

Hired the D Coordinator that made it impossible for the Saints to get the first round bye over the 49ers. I like the hire. He had a great game plan ready when the top offense rolled into Saint Louis.

he has his work cut out for him. i think his schemes require a lot of production from the fount four, which is something the saints haven't had much of. there is young talent there with ellis and jordan but the rest are inconsistent. smith is on the decline. rogers and franklin were disappointing, i thought. the LB position needs to be addressed in the worst way.

Saints are playing for rings, Spag has the experience, this is a fantastic hire for NO as Spag will try and earn his way back to being a head coach again.

If you have an abundance of good cover people in the back 7 it can make up for a lack of pass rush from the DL. The Saints defense did a lot of that in 2010 and had very good results. Will Smith has been a disappointment and I think he is likely to take a big pay cut or be released altogether. Jordan, Ellis, Galette and Romeus are probably the future of the d line. This is a great hire. Spagnuolo is a coach who recognizes that backing off and play lots of coverage can also be confusing to quarterbacks. It seemed like Gregg Williams had learned that in 2010 but for whatever reason went back to his old tricks this year.

i would argue that the saints back 7 has been only so-so. they have their moments game to game, usually when it counted. i think it's easy for people to say he was a relentless blitzer. there were some great games called this year where he mixed coverage with his blitzing to great effect. the calls in the SF game did not work so well. the idea that alex smith would fold or revert to old alex smith with the pressure on him sounds like a good one. smith, to his credit, made some big time plays and they killed the saints in the game. that we were burned once is believable but more than that is pretty bad.

Not going out on a ledge here, but this signing puts them as the favorite to win the NFC(and super bowl) within the next 2-3 years. He may need a year to bring his "type of guys in" but they will win another one real soon.

I wouldn't be shocked to see some of the current Giants head south once they are FA's as well. They loved playing for Spags.(I'm looking at you, Osi)

Wouldn't want to lose Osi but he would be a perfect down in NO to reunite with Spags.

As an Eagles fan that is now expecting either Juan Castillo or Joe from accounting to be our next DC, this is a kick to the groin.

i'm pretty sure Osi would be an asset to any defense he was added to.

Spags is only good with a pass rush
Saints as a whole did not have a great pass rush but they have some people with talent. Cam Jordan is really similar to Chris Long, who just made a big leap this season under Spagnuolo. There are some other good young players like Junior Galette and Greg Romeus. I'm excited to see what Spag can do with these kids.

Maybe the Eagles can get Bob from Accountemps to be our next DC. He seems to do a pretty good job, at least based on the commercials.

Spags followed Fox well in NY. I imagine he'll do well following a good defensive mind in NOLA. They need better defenders. Their high octane offense seems to almost dictate what the opposing offense will do to their defense as a counterpunch of sorts. It's an unusual defensive situation. If Brees leads them to a quick TD, their D is back on the field right away and...it's unusual.

I don't imagine a NYG influx since that didn't happen in STL. The Supe opportunity might be something to entice them, but the Giants are the one's still playing so it's not fair to say the Saints are more likely to win a Supe then the Gmen so move your family here and leave your teammates.

From what I understand, Osi was available last summer and the summer before but the Giants didn't get the large trade offers they wanted in return. Jason Pierre Paul seemed to have a sack every game and the Gmen sure do have a knack for drafting pass rushing DEs. I doubt they fear losing Osi as much as most teams when losing a talented DE. I just don't think they're going to be dopey about it either. Just because they can draft someone or remind Kiwi he used to be an exciting DE, doesn't mean they have to if the offer stinks.

Personally, if I were the Saints I'd buy the best secondary money can buy. There are plenty of quality DBs out there in FA and if they overload on DBs it'd seem like "good luck out passing Brees."
