spinoff greatest rb in history (1 Viewer)

Recenlty a friend and I were talking about Jeff Smarjdja or however you spell it and i was saying how he could be a decent two sport athlete (pitch for the cubs, play wr for whoever drafts him)...anyway, he said that no two sport athlete could ever compare to Deion Sanders and be as good at both sports as he was. I countered with Bo Jackson, and he said "Deion was a top 3 db during his day, Bo wasnt that good of a running back"...i laughed, and said i ahve actually heard debates that if he didnt get injured, he had a chance to be the best of all time. What do you sharks think? Who was a better two sport athlete, Bo or Dieon, and will there ever be another one that can compare to either of them??

I think Bo was better at both sports. Dieon was only a slightly better baseball player than Michael Jordan.

Deion was the shutdown corner. Bo, I believe, was the best pure runner I've ever witnessed (purely opinion). I know very little baseball, so I looked it up:

Deion Sanders (9 MLB Seasons)

2123 AB / 558 Hits / 39 HR / 168 RBI / 186 SB / .263 AVG / 711 OPS

Bo Jackson (8 MLB Seasons)

2393 AB / 598 Hits / 141 HR / 415 RBI / 82 SB / .250 AVG / 783 OPS

They seem pretty comparable to me - I'm willing to give Bo a lot of leeway as far as his NFL career goes, because I remember watching the guy and just being in AWE of his ability.

Deion is a first-ballot NFL HOFer, Bo probably will never sniff it.

Deion's key asset was his speed and he did have good hands.

But....Bo was a freak of nature. He had speed, power and great hand-eye coordination. He was a freaking All-star in baseball where Deion wasn't really even an everyday player, IIRC. They both were All-pro in football, and Bo was considered one of the top 2 or 3 backs in the league in his day.

And what about Super Tecmo Bowl? Bo was unstoppable. I think that ends the debate right there.

Primetime was a better baseball player than you think. If I remember correctly, he only played baseball at FSU his freshman year. I remember him playing in FSU’s spring baseball game and then played in a football game that night. He also hit a homerun and scored a TD on the same day, back when he played for the Falcons and Braves.

I go with Deion for this reason:

Sanders amassed 7,838 all-purpose yards scored 22 touchdowns: 9 interception returns, 6 punt returns, 3 kickoff returns, 3 receiving, and 1 fumble recovery.

He scored more TD's than Bo Jackson as primarily a CB and Return Man. That's incredible. Of course Bo's career was cut short but still.

Their baseball stats are pretty comparable, Bo with more HR's and Deion with more SB's and a slightly better average.

Although Bo was phenominal for a short period of time I think the "Bo Knows" campaign, the Seattle MNF game, and the running up the side of the wall all helped feed the legend status he carries with him today.

Local rumor/myth about Deion

He was running the 40 for NFL scouts at FSU when he came out. He ran the 40 in shorts, shirt, no football gear. After he ran it one NFL scout told him “son that is great but we wear pads in the NFL” Deion went to the locker room, suited up in full football gear and beat his time before.

And the towering home runs, the throw out at home from the left field wall...

Deion's great but Bo was an absolute monster.

watch some of his clips with the Raiders and you'll see what i'm talking about. i may be mistaken, but i think his 40 time was in the 4.1-4.2 range and his career YPC was like 5.2. dude RAN over guys like they were nothing. only till Vick and Lebron came onto the scene have I been as astonished at the difference in pure athletic talent between players.

i'm pretty sure he was a baseball All-Star and Pro Bowl player in the same year.

A couple of things to consider here on the baseball front - one, Bo played with Kansas City when they were becoming a struggling franchise and Deion was with a very good set of Reds teams, two, some of the stats for Bo came after his hip surgery.

Ha! I was downplaying my love of Bo Jackson because I thought there would be a bunch of Deion love here.

After Dan Marino, Bo Jackson is my favorite football player of all time. Watching him run was absolutely ridiculous. I think he had the talent to be the greatest running back ever to play the game.

I've mentioned this before, and it has nothing to do with Bo Jackson, but what the hell...

Back in 2001, Deion Sanders signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays. It was widely assumed that his "comeback" was actually an excuse not to have to go to Redskins training camp, where Schottenheimer was working everyone to exhaustion. Anyway, he never made it to Toronto but he did play for their Syracuse AAA team for several weeks.

So Syracuse comes to Ottawa to play the Lynx and I manage to talk my wife into going even though she doesn't really like baseball. There's a decent crowd that day because everyone wants to see Deion. The crowd is trying to heckle him all game, but Ottawa isn't much of a sports town so it's basically "Hey Deion, you suck" and that sort of thing.

So it's late in the game and Deion comes up for his last at-bat of the day. And just as he's settling into the batter's box, my wife (a big Redskins fan) stands up and yells "Hey look everybody, it's Champ Bailey's backup!" Brought the house down, including cracking up the guy on deck who had to turn away so Deion couldn't see him laughing.

Deion retired from both sports two days later. I'm not saying my wife heckled him into retirement, but I'm not saying she didn't either.

***System Error*****

***Insufficent Data***

...but if there was sufficient data, we clearly woouldn't be having this conversation. Bo Knows in a landslide!

Bo was a much better two sport player. And to the one guy saying Bo was hyped from his "Bo knows" and his MNF game vs Seattle, "Prime Time" was alot of hype too. Great cover guy that didn't like to tackle.

Bo would have knocked Neon Deon out if they crossed paths in either sport.
