Sport Card Collecting (1 Viewer)

I have a shoebox of '65, '66 and '67s.  Most aren't in sellable shape but I did catch a few really good ones that were in good shape and put them in those hard plastic cases.

I don't even know which box they are in up in the attic.

got a couple Mickeys - good shape, I'm sure not this kind of shape

several Jim Palmer rookie cards

Tony Perez rookie card, etc.

Figure whatever I could get would be a fraction of what I would find online - crappy grading and dealer treatment (old man Harrison ...not even Rick-style)
I have a 68 Mantle.  That was my first year.  Have several from the last 132 which are hard to find.

Never owned but one of the most memorable cards from my youth:

ripken
I owned one. Sold all my cards for $500 when my mother sold childhood home. Luckily, I had collected some old stuff along with the 80s and 90s cards of my youth to get some return of the thousands I surely put in. I could see myself maybe going back and buying my childhood grail that I couldn't afford -- a Koufax rookie -- someday, but that would be as far as my involvement in card collecting will ever go again.

My God...if only I had spent my time and $ in the 90's opening packs of Magic cards instead of Sports cards...probably 10 grand worth collected in my childhood. Worth about $500 now. Would probably be worth a million dollars if they were Magic cards. Crazy.
I have a couple thousand pre 1996 Magic cards but from what Ive seen on ebay they are really not worth much. Must have stopped buying before dual lands and such came out. I think Ice Age was the last set I bought any of.

Pulled out my shoeboxes and 3 ring notebook of cards to show my son a couple of years ago, he was probably 8. Gave him some of my 70's crappy cards to put alongside his new football cards. He thought they were awesome, reminded me when I was his age in the 70's and how cool the cards from the 50's seemed.

He's now a teen and a new card store opened up in town. We go there every 4 months or so just to check things out. He found some Michael Jordan White Sox cards and thought they were so cool. He bought a nice one for $20. He loves that card, the crossover appeal is strong - he loves the Bo Jackson stories, too.

He'll keep that Jordan card forever.

It's not baseball cards but I have a few guys the work for me that are into Magic the Gathering.  One of them is currently selling his collection off and has become quite the aficionado of current prices.  One of the other guys brought in his dads set of cards just to get a value and one of the cards was worth $1200.  In all, the handful of cards (I'd estimate 150ish cards) were worth over $8k if he were to sell them all on ebay.  The kid said his dad had a TON more at home too but these were apparently the decks he plays with.  Wish I'd collected those as a kid instead of baseball cards :(.

I had a friend back in the late 80's early 90's that had a card shop in Houston that he did as a side business (we were both in our late 20's).

About once a month he'd take me on a trip somewhere like Vegas, Orlando, Pheonix, LA, etc........ (all expenses paid) to help him carry his stuff, set it up, and basically be a gopher at any show. We'd leave Friday after work and get back Sunday night. Needless to say, lots of nights out for dinner, drinks and entertainment. This went on for about 7-8 years until the business basically dried up.

He sold his inventory for a pretty nice sum and bought his dream house and a house on Lake Conroe north of Houston. Now happily married and he retired at 52.

Fast Forward 26 years later.......................each year I've bought each of my boys 2 boxes of baseball cards on their birthdays. They are both waiting until the youngest gets to be 21 to open them up (1 1/2 more years).

I'm old now and just got to be a grandpa. I'm repeating (only 3 boxes baseball each year) the for all the grandkids.

Hope that each of boys find something that will help financially and that the grandkids have some college education money.

Probably not as smart as investing in a fund for them, but we are a baseball family (both boys play(ed) in college), so this is more up our alley and more fun.

What are the legit sites to use to buy unopened packs and boxes?
I've only bought online from Target or Walmart or directly from Fanatics. Have sold some on eBay and Mercari, but man, I'm scared to buy from them.
Scared to buy what, unopened or just in general?
Unopened. Maybe one with a factory labeled seal, but even then. I'm sure many of them are fine. I just prefer buying from the retailers (or hobby, we just don't have a hobby shop here any more).

Dave and Adams is a nationally known hobby shop and it's by me they are great. Boxes, packs, breaks, memorabilia etc. I try to avoid Target and Walmart unless it's for a kid getting started. The retail store boxes odds of pulling anything good are very hard, pay more and get the guarantee auto's etc from a hobby shop;.

I would trust the two names I gave. A couple others are Burbank Sports and Dave & Adams. One thing I don’t trust is buying single boxes from eBay or an unknown ship. Many times, the case hits a lot in the same spot in the case. Some dealers replace the box, and sell off the case.
