Sportsmanship (1 Viewer)

I wonder if the pitcher was more upset about hitting the batter or if he was more upset because he was melting down and letting the other team back in the game. I would guess it is more the second one. It's nice that the batter went out there but I also know it is sometimes worse for the pitcher that the batter did that if it is taken the wrong way. I know that 12 year old me wouldn't have liked that guy coming over to talk to me.

It plays well on TV and is perfect for the twitterverse and makes everyone feel good.

The point isn't the pitchers reaction or how he reacted to the batter he hit - it's all about the sportsmanship that kid showed. If the pitcher took it the wrong way who cares - that's his problem.

I read somewhere that the two kids were buddies off the field. So there was general concern from the pitcher that he hurt his friend.

Yeah, I didn't bother watching it again but it sounded like he called him by name before going over. My guess is like other sports, you end up knowing or playing with a lot of the other really good kids on travel teams, AAU, etc.

This would change the dynamics for sure. I can see being much more distraught if it was your buddy you just hit in the head over some player you never knew before and that the batter coming over to console his friend being much more meaningful.

I don't really see the batter consoling the pitcher as a sportsmanship situation necessarily and I do think the pitchers reaction is an important piece. If fact the pitcher could have met the batter to see if he was all right as a show of sportsmanship as many Asian league pitchers do after hitting a batter.

Don't get me wrong it's a touching moment but not sure it's as big as the twitterverse is making it out to be. It does give a lot more context knowing (if) the two were good friends.

Back in the game? it was bottom of first with 2 outs, still up a run
I was watching in live in a casino in Vegas. I couldn't see the inning and the way everyone was reacting I thought it was late in the game. Oops.

ETA: still the pitcher likely wasn't happy about loading the bases and giving up a couple runs even if it was early.
