After parting ways with Adam Archuleta, the Rams found themselves searching for a veteran leader to provide guidance to the youngsters in their secondary as well as produce on the field. Enter Corey Chavous, one of the league?s most studious players. Chavous was instantly installed as the starter at strong safety. But, there is a battle brewing at free safety where second-year players Jerome Carter and Oshiomogho Atogwe are ready to contend for their first starting jobs in the NFL.
Does it still appear that Atogwe is the front runner and get the job?

Yes.

Do you have a link for that blurb? Sounds like something that would've been written just before camp last season, not this season. Atogwe started every game last year and played very well. He could improve his tackling a bit, but was solid in coverage and provided a number of big plays. Jerome Carter is more of a strong safety IMO and again didn't establish himself as an NFL talent last year.

I don't see any way Atogwe isn't the starting FS this year and for the long-term.

I actually got it from his player page right here on Footballguys. Here is the full article it links to:
That article on the Rams website is from prior to last season.
:wall: I just paid attention to the "July 9th" date and assumed it was an update from today. Guess I shoulda paid attention to the "2006" that followed it.
Stick to LBs buddy. :goodposting:

so what #s can we expect from him... Atogwe was decent FA pick up for me last yr
Depends on how well Pisa Tinoisamoa plays. Both safeties had decent tackle stats in 2005, but the Rams didn't have a WLB healthy enough to make tackles. When healthy, Tino has been a nice player. A good season from him could cut into the FS tackle numbers. Atogwe might get a shot at a few more coverage plays if Adam Carriker and James Hall improve the pass rush. I think both John and Sig have him projected very optimistically. I think his 2006 line would be about all I would count on for 2007.
