Stallworth not expected to be resigned by the Eagles (1 Viewer)

Donte' Stallworth isn't expected to be re-signed by the Eagles.

General manager Tom Heckert has said he's willing to go with a four-receiver rotation involving Reggie Brown, Hank Baskett, Jason Avant, and Greg Lewis. Brown would likely be Donovan McNabb's top receiver. Baskett and Avant might have the best chances to start opposite him.

I think they are resigned to the notion that Stallworth is going to enter a FA market that has the potential to look like the Wild West.

He could easily get an offer for #1 WR money. I doubt the Eagles think he is that guy.

A tough decision to make, but if Donte gets the offer I think he expects, I understand where the Eagles are coming from.

Paul Domowitch | Offseason might sting, Birds fans

by Paul Domowitch

THREE PIECES of advice for Eagles fans as they prepare for an offseason not expected to bubble over with Super Bowl-here-we-come news: 1) stay away from the knife drawer; 2) keep the acid-reflux medicine close by; and 3) focus on the Phillies until the rookies report to Lehigh.Between now and then, not much that will happen at One Nova-Care Way likely will bring much of a smile to your face, other than possibly the long-overdue pink slips expected to be given to Dhani Jones and Jerome McDougle.

The free-agent market is anorexic, but even if it weren't, and even if the Eagles actually were inclined to gobble up veterans, which they're not, they don't have their usual 1,000 acres of salary-cap space. After signing several young players to long-term extensions in 2006, they will head into free agency less than $13 million under the projected $109 million cap.

Free-agent quarterback Jeff Garcia, who helped resurrect the Eagles after Donovan McNabb's season-ending knee injury, probably won't be back. While the Eagles have said they want to re-sign him to back up McNabb again, at least three teams - Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Green Bay (if Brett Favre retires) - appear to be interested in the soon-to-be- 37-year-old Garcia as a possible short-term starter.

Wide receiver Donté Stallworth also probably is going bye-bye. The free-agent crop of wideouts is extremely lean, and Stallworth, who averaged 19.1 yards per catch this season, is expected to draw quite a bit of interest.

As with Garcia, the Eagles have said they wouldn't be averse to re-signing Stallworth. But they're not interested in a bidding war. General manager Tom Heckert is on record as saying he and coach Andy Reid would be content playing with a four-man receiving corps of Reggie Brown, Hank Baskett, Jason Avant and Greg Lewis. Wonder how Todd Pinkston's footsies are doing?

Two other free agents, nickel corner Rod Hood and former starting strong safety Mike Lewis, are history. Middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter's future also is uncertain. Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson acknowledged after the Eagles' playoff loss to the Saints that Trotter, who didn't have a very good season and whose knees have begun to betray him, "can't play too many plays" anymore.

Trotter's salary jumps from $1.7 million in '06 to $2.63 million in '07. He could be released or asked to take a pay cut. What kind of adrenaline rush would an '07 starting linebacking corps of untested Chris Gocong, Omar Gaither (at Trotter's spot in the middle) and Matt McCoy give you? Thought so.

If you're hoping against hope that the Eagles will go after a linebacker or a big power back to complement Brian Westbrook in the first round of the draft, you probably will be disappointed there, too. Best bet right now is a safety or cornerback or, gulp, another defensive lineman.

Contract talk

The Eagles' smaller-than-usual salary-cap space is the result of two things: 1) contract extensions handed out last year to such young players as Shawn Andrews, Jamaal Jackson, Todd Herremans, Reggie Brown, Mike Patterson and Trent Cole; and 2) salary escalations of a number of vets.

Defensive end Jevon Kearse's base salary will jump from $2.1 million in '06 to $5.2 million in '07. Tackle Jon Runyan's increases from $1.15 million to $2.9 million. Westbrook, who signed an extension in November '05, will see his base salary jump from $585,000 to $2 million. Defensive end Darren Howard's doubles from $1 million to $2 million. Tackle William Thomas, who earned $3.65 million in '06, will make $4.55 million next season. Safety Brian Dawkins' salary, on the other hand, actually drops, from $3 million last season to $1.2 million on '07.

McNabb's salary and cap number stay flat. He earned $5.5 million in salary in '06 and will make the same in '07. His '07 cap number, which includes prorated bonuses, will be $8.6 million. McNabb's current deal runs through 2013. His base salaries and cap numbers for the final 6 years of his contract: 2008, $6.3 million ($9.4 million cap cost); 2009, $9.2 million ($10.4 million, one of two prorated bonuses expires); 2010, $10 million ($10 million, second prorated bonus expires); 2011, $12.1 million ($12.1 million); 2012, $14.1 million ($14.1 million); 2013, $16.2 million ($16.2 million).

....
This isn't about Philadelphia being cheap, it is about setting reasonable expectations. With so many teams with $ to burn this off-season and a thin group of WRs on the FA market, don't expect Stallworth to NOT get a huge offer from someone.

Interesting. Here's a story by Domowitch back in September when the Stallworth for Simoneau + pick trade was made. :banned:

Link

Paul Domowitch | Saint's bird-brained move nice for Eagles

IT'S HARD to quantify stupid, but dealing away a wide receiver the caliber of Donté Stallworth for Mark Simoneau and a conditional fourth-round draft pick is a pretty good place to start....

If you're the Eagles, you're thanking God right now that there are people in the league as incompetent as Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and player personnel director Rick Mueller - people to whom you can turn when you realize, nearly too late, that Todd Pinkston is a wimp....

Andy Reid and Tom Heckert might want to send them a nice thank-you gift if the Eagles make the playoffs, which is a much better possibility today than it was earlier this week.

"They just don't have a clue down there," an NFC personnel chief said. "I know they didn't think they were going to be able to re-sign him. But for crying out loud, you don't just give him away. This is a guy who caught 70 passes last season."...

It is what it is said:
90% of these local beat reporters covering their home teams are gonna side (or be okay) with whatever their home team does in the moment. Their jobs and team sources depend on this.

Look at those beat reporters down in Dallas now...many of them are claiming Parcells left due to financial issues. This is due to one or two reasons. One, the Cowboys organization wants to cover their butts in case there was a problem between Bill Parcells and Jerry Jones, and fed the reporters this info...or two, these beat reporters want to firmly entrench themselves between the Cowboys cheeks so they can break the next big story to come out of big D, and maintain their status quo in reporting on the Cowboys.

This is pretty typical as the local NFL team reporters go...team loyalty goes a long way in these kind of jobs.
Oh, I certainly agree with that. What struck me was, I just don't think I'd ever seen a writer so blatantly ridicule another team's front office the way this guy did -- guess that's why I recalled it when this thread came up.Edit to add: I don't know anything about Domowitch, maybe this is his standard modus operandi. Still would be interesting to ask him what he thinks now of his 1 Sept column.

Yeah, seriously. What's with the Eagles brass being so stupid about their WRs??? For years upon years!
Whats Stallworth really done to deserve the type of money some team will give him this offseason?Reggie Brown overtook him this year.Hes never consistently produced or stayed healthy in a season.
My impression was that Stallworth was willing to accept a bit less to stay in Philly. Am I wrong about that? Either way, he made plays that the other guys on that roster have shown they can't make, at least not as consistently or as well. I think it's stupid to let him go, and it's not like the Eagles don't have the cap room.

I think his fantasy value would take a nosedive if he signed with almost any other team.
I think he'd be a nice fit in San Fran or Detroit...
He needs to be with a QB who can throw it deep. That's where he made his plays for the Eagles. I think he'd be awesome with Campbell in Washington, but Lloyd's presence there prevents that unfortunately. He'd be interesting in San Diego though . . .

Don't agree with this at all. Stallworth was the man when healthy with McNabb this year. With McNabb Stallworth went for 518-3 in 6 games with 9 or more targets in 4 of the 6 games (53 targets- 8.8/game) and Reggie went for 551-5 in 10 games (64 targets - 6.4/game). 3 of Reggies 5 td's with McNabb were when Stallworth was injured. What happened with Garcia is irrelevant since Stallworth is a deep threat and Garcia doesn't have that type of arm and next year Garcia will be back on the bench or on another team. Stallworth's problem always has been his health and he had big problems again last year so I can see why teams wouldn't want to break the bank for him. When healthy though last year Stallworth >> R. Brown.

You might want to take another look at the 70+ yard TD to Stallworth against the Saints.....

Let's revisit:

Stallworth, when healthy - Good deep threat, quick, slants and outs. Outside WR for the most part, but can do the quick slant (but sometimes drops).

Reggie Brown - intermediate and short WR - good possession guy, good not great speed and hands. Solid WR - but not flashy. Better #2 than #1. Could be a 1A.

Hank Baskett - Used in slot, big target, can leap well. Tall, good hands. Raw WR, not very polished.

Greg Lewis - Deep threat, slot guy, medium to long WR. Could easily be replaced, but a good contract IIRC.

Jason Avant - Couldn't get on the field over the first 4 guys. Possession guy, big target, was used in the slot. Two TDs, one in meaningless Week 17. Could improve to a #3 option next year.

Excellent news. With Tiki Barber's & Parcell's retirement, change of coach in Atlanta, the only real challenge for the Bears next year in the NFC is Eagles, Saints and Seahawks. If Garcia and Stallworth leave and Mcnabb cannot make it back in time, that shrinks it down to 2 teams

So the Eagles don't want to give a huge contract to a guy who's always hurt and has NEVER been a 1k WR (which isn't that hard) in his 5 year career.

Good move by the Eagles, giving out a fat contract to one of the most over-rated and inconsistant WR's in the NFL would be a big mistake.

 McNabb doesnt throw to one WR more than the other for a specific reason other than the system dictates it to be so. All WC offenses feature the flanker more.

By your logic, the Eagles shouldnt have gotten rid of TO.

Saying "reggie brown overtook him" meant that Brown looked to be the more complete, reliable player, and looks to me, like a better NFL WR.

I dont think they'll go into next year with Avant and Baskett as the #2, but Brown is capable of being the #1. He did just fine in that role when Donte was out.

I'd love to see Stallworth and his speed back on the Eagles, but with cap space more limited then usual, and other more pressing needs on the roster, I can't see breaking the bank for him as worth it. If he could be counted on to stay on the field for 16 games, heck...even for FOURTEEN games, it might be.

The Eagles have been ultra-competitive in the NFL for a long time now because of decisions just like this...the ability to let a guy go, even when he can help and is popular.

I will wager the Titans go after him hard. They finally have some cash to spend and he would make that sorry WR corp better. The former Vol would be a nice target for Mr. Young.

I sure hope not. Titans dont need to continue to throw big money at WRs. They need to add another decent body, but the money theyd spend for Stallworth would be alot better spent going for a Jared Allen or Charles Grant.

If the decision is that the Eagles do not want Stallworth, then I think it is a bad move. Stallworth is a very talented WR with speed. Granted he is injury prone, but when healthy he is good; and, definitely better then what the Eagles have currently on the roster. The Eagles will suffer if they try to go with the quartet of WRs led by Brown.

With that said, I think it is a wise decsion if it is that they don't want to pay Stallworth big money. He certainly is not worth big money. He has not shown an ability to stay healthy or work hard to deserve such money. So if the Eagles have attempted to discuss resigning him, and Stallworth's demands are extremely high, then they need to move on. But they will still need to get another WR.

Maybe a pick up of a vet that is cut due to salary issues (i.e. Horn) or another WR who may be hitting FA because of the lean crop but who isn't "all that (i.e. Lelie).

I've mentioned it before, but I have heard that the Titans are indeed interested in Stallworth.

Stallworth is exactly what the Titans need - a WR with injury concerns. I guess if you don't want to draft injury prone WRs anymore, offer them big $ FA contracts.

Think it hurts McNabb. Now he really doesn't have anyone to stretch the field. He and Stallworth connected on a number of big plays early in the season.

I know Stallworth doesnt stay on the field but boy did he fit that Eagles offense well. I thought Stallworth played GREAT for the Eagles and his only problem was missing time. Granted thats kind of a big problem. I didnt see the problem with drops for Philly as much as he had with NO.

When have the Titans thrown big money at WRs? Not in recent history they have not. This current corp is straight from the bargin bin. Since Bennett is a UFA, they will have to have someone suite up. Any FA WR is going to be expensive.

They need a character guy who is good with the fans, is talented and will keep his nose clean while following instructions. I think they should trade for Chris Henry.

Come on, McNabb was a Pro Bowl QB with NOBODY at WR - Freddie "4th and 26" Mitchell? Todd Pinkston?

Gee, I sure am glad that the Birds' front office didn't yield to public pressure and trade for Javon Walker last year. Winston Justice represents much better value for that 2nd round pick. Plus, now we get to watch another WR contract drama play out this summer, where the Eagles may have the best intentions but ultimately lose, once again relegating the team's WR corps to the bottom third of the league.

Gotta love that Gold Standard!

You're joking right? He had 3200 yards and 16 TDs in 2003.

What does this do for Reggie Brown's fantasy value? Will it take a semi-hit over the long haul or will he explode next year?

He also ran for 3.2003 isn't a great example, but look at Philly's top receiver from 2000-2003. Donovan was the 5th, 8th, 13th and 13th best QB in those four years where the leading recevieir was Chad Lewis (a TE), James Thrash, and Todd Pinkston twice.Of course he was third with TO in 2004.I'm just saying don't say he wasn't a good QB with bad WRs. He might have been one of the best considering the lack of talent around him.

What really gets me is it sounds like they won't even explore the possibility of signing Stallworth, that their minds are made up. Reid and Banner are talking in the past tense when his name has come up recently. If they attempt to sign him and he gets ridiculous money from somewhere, then ok, I understand. But at least give it a shot, he makes them a better offense.

I think they will - the reporter (and maybe even the FO) is lowering expectations for the more likely scenario.

Don't they have Bloom on IR too?
Yes, and he's learned a lot from the sidelines, film room and practices. Reacclimated to football after a hiatus.
If he can create some noise, they might be OK. He's a bit undersized but IIRC several teams liked him last April. Olympic training is pretty crazy so I'm sure he's got a great workout attitude.I thought Brown played well when Stallworth wasn't around. Brown's development seems to be coming along just fine. I wouldn't be surprised if he's very good in FF in 07.I don't see how Stallworth not being around is a reason to panic. Due to some stellar drafts I love their depth in some spots. I don't see a ton of "need" for their team. Maybe they can package some picks and move up. Hasn't Shanny traded picks in one year for a better pick the following year? Not so much like FF, I realize it's different, just one or two small moves. A guy like Justice that looks good now might not pan out. Might be more beneficial to have an extra pick then in 08. I don't know, looking at mocks I just feel like they don't really need all the picks in the draft but instead to get some players experience to truly evaluate them. We'll see, free agency has a way of ripping apart a team so that could change I suppose.

for the first time in a while, they need help on the defensive side of the ball more than on offense.

WR is a glamour spot, but they're strong otherwise (yes, everyone says they need a 2nd RB).

LB is a glaring weakness. After Trotter, there's issues, and Trotter is having trouble going 60 minutes and every down.

DB depth is also a problem.

I'd expect 2/3 of their draft to be on defense unless they bring in a few good FAs.

At first I was asking myself "What in the heck are they thinking?!" But then I realized what I've always said about Stallworth -- great talent and shows flashes of brilliance, but he just can NOT stay healthy for long. He's always had hammy problems. Check him out:

Two seasons are all he's played in 16 games (never started all 16 ever). I think he'd be a good #2, maybe even #1 if he could ever stay healthy..........

Think it hurts McNabb. Now he really doesn't have anyone to stretch the field. He and Stallworth connected on a number of big plays early in the season.
Come on, McNabb was a Pro Bowl QB with NOBODY at WR - Freddie "4th and 26" Mitchell? Todd Pinkston?

You're joking right? He had 3200 yards and 16 TDs in 2003.
Where did I say he wasn't a good QB? I said losing Stallworth would hurt his value from a fantasy standpoint. His receivers go from quite good to mediocre without him. I wouldn't expect big rushing numbers with the ACL tear and the fact that he wasn't running like he used to before the injury.
