Star Wars: Battlefront (2 Viewers)

Demo is fun. Nothing terribly innovative. But good old fashioned FPS fun.
Came here to post something like this. Gorgeous game -- great eye-candy. And while I don't want to call it "casual," it's certainly accessible in a way that Battlefield sometimes isn't. For example, I hopped in one of the two-legged walker things on the Hoth map and had no problem figuring it out on the fly, which is a far cry from any vehicles in Battlefield. The no-recoil guns are a little weird, but again they make the game very friendly.

Please tell me they're not gonna have paid DLC map packs. If so, I'm out.
Of course they are. I doubt you'll ever see a FPS without them again.
Yeah, its pretty rare. Halo 5 is doing it though. All free DLC.
I've paid for DLC map packs before, and I always end up wishing they had done something like this and just given them away so as not split the community and to ensure good traffic on the "new" maps.

I'm in on PC. Downloading the beta now, interested to see if my system will still play it acceptably (I'm thinking it will, I think it's based on the same engine as BF4, which plays fine most of the time).

I am concerned about the matchmaking system, and may not buy pre-sale or at launch because of that. May wait till the inevitable winter sale.

The beta is ok. The 16-player game is basically a Team DM with a side objective. The battle for Hoth is much more enjoyable; at least if you're an Imperial. Think Rush for Battlefield, except the attacking team has all the good stuff and the defending team has objectives to take too. First time in a X-Wing, I found out quickly that the game defaults to having the flight controls non-inverted. Not cool, Dice.

Overall, I'm still good on waiting until it drops below half price. But I did enjoy listening to the awesome soundtrack while on the ... um, battlefield.

Played for a couple of hours last night on the Xbox1. I knew I would be fairly terrible (I'm a PC gamer in terms of shooters and can't really aim very well with a controller) but my failures didn't really affect the fun level of the game. I managed to hang just under a 1-1 K/D ratio most rounds and you obviously respawn pretty quickly.

I only played on Hoth. I've never been a huge fan of the RUSH style game play (Dice botched the map design pretty badly for this mode on Bf3 and Bf4) but it was fine here. I'm sure I'd enjoy conquest a little more, but whatever.

They nailed the look, feel and sound of Star Wars so obviously it will have some nostalgia appeal for a lot of people. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those people. I'm a little too young to be all wrapped up in the original movies, so the pew-pew of the blasters doesn't really do it for me.

To me, the only thing drawing me to a game like this is the heroes. And since you only get to play as the heroes every once in a while, the rest of the game mechanics have to carry the day. For me, the rest of the game is a pretty generic futuristic type shooter with a star wars overlay. There's nothing wrong with it, but the ability to play as faceless storm troopers or rebels isn't really drawing me in. Maybe I'll buy this when its on sale, but for now, I've got enough games (especially shooter games) to get me through to Xcom2 and maybe Tom Clancy's: The Division in February.

I'm waiting for the full game to play on Endor. By far the best map on the ps2/Xbox versions.
Endor was fun on ps2, but a little too dark. Hoth is always the best for me. The Bespin? One was fun but really hard to beat on ps2. Tatooine was great also. I loved that I could go wherever on ps2 maps, I am worried the new one won't allow that.

Decidedly a 'meh' from me so far (playing on PC).

Major issue I have off the bat: vehicle controls are pretty awful generally, and the desired sensitivity from vehicle to vehicle is all over the map. My first attempt in a snowspeeder was like piloting a dump truck because the default vehicle sensitivity is far too low when using mouse / keyboard. I quickly found the setting to change vehicle control sensitivity and figured all was well after boosting it from 20% to 80%. Flying still felt a bit ####ty, but it was doable. However, I soon discovered that map-based turrets are also considered vehicles, for which the 80% sensitivity was nigh impossible to use as my aim flew all over the place at the slightest twitch. This problem also affected the AT-ST walkers.

Other than that, the game feels pretty generic, though it is beautiful. Maybe that'll get better come release, but I'm struggling to see them reaching the same diversity of weapons / attachments of something like Battlefield or COD to try to extend the life of the game.

I did get to play as Luke once when I stumbled across the Hero power up in a trench near the first rush points. It was fun for the brief time I got, but I had barely any idea what I was doing. I did manage to kill Vader before I got squashed by an AT-ST, though.

The Star Wars feel is great, but the Hoth map layout sucks. The rebel spawns get camped so bad. You spawn and are immediately in someone's sites and dead very quickly.

This I think would be one of the few things that could kill the game for me. If the boards aren't designed well, and multiple maps have spawn camping weaknesses, that would render it unplayable.

Similar to this, I noticed that one of the uplinks on the last set of trenches for the rebels is in clear firing sight for the computer AT-ATs requiring the rebel trying to activate the uplink to be facing away from the AT-AT with their back wide open to the insta-kill guns. Maybe on purpose, but with the lack of teamwork, pretty ####ty. Basically the only way to get around that is to flood the AT-AT with targets so he doesn't waste the guy holding 'E' to activate the uplink.

I'm also relatively underwhelmed. I really don't like not being able to choose a server, and although I joined on GatorShawn at some point, and I believe he later found me in a Hoth game, the party system so far seems a bit clunky.

It's definitely looking like I can save a few bucks on this one, maybe if we all end up picking it up around the same time, being behind on the weapon curve (if that exists in this game) won't be so bad.

I'm not sure what advanced weapons curve (if it exists) would matter - there's zero recoil. It appears as though this is very much a casual fun sit on the couch shooter. Those definitely have their place, but I'm not dropping $60 on it.

I had a blast playing it with my kids in voice chat together. The partner system is cool, you can use their loadout.

It's not too complex, you can pick it up and run with it pretty quickly and with the low level 5 cap on the beta, you'll start to see some serious pub stomps taking place but once the cap goes up to whatever they set it at, the matches should be pretty evenly base since the matchmaking is being done how it is.

It won't appeal to ultra-competitive guys, but I am not a very good FPS player and I had some great rounds and some rounds where I got curb stomped.

I really like the system that forces you to engage in the landscape and get into the mix of infantry combat and not just hang back at spawn waiting for the vehicles to spawn.

Hopefully the placement of the powerups is somewhat random so you don't have people dominating those elements of the game. Again, I know this won't appeal to everyone as some people play BF4 just to fly attach helicopter for example.

I need a game that I can just pop into for a few rounds at night. You could sort of do that with BF4 but I found that if I didn't play that ever day for an hour+ I would spend the first round or two just getting back into a rhythm. This didn't feel like it had anywhere near the skill curve and I'm thankful for that because it's a beautiful and immersive game.

The Team system is not very intuitive. I couldn't figure out how to switch teams to be on Maelstrom's side. Finally I accepted his invite and it moved me over, I think. But I couldn't find any sort of in-game VOIP which is very disappointing.

I noticed the lack of VOIP, and I couldn't even figure out the chat (I think it is Y, U and J, but I could never get it to activate). I think it'll be fun, and I agree with GS about the powerups loading in the landscape is an interesting wrinkle. But still not sure it's a launch-time buy for me.

Oh, and I think GS killed me everytime out paths crossed when we were on opposite sites...

One thing that is pissing me off, their servers don't load balance. You are funneled to servers without any control over it and I spent 3 rounds down 3 just now on Sullust. 8 versus 5. Shockingly we lost because with no respawn timer you just could not overcome 3 extra people on their side even though my side dominated the kills.

Heroes are wayyyyyy too weak. Wtf. I saw my teammates teabagging a "killed" (kneeled over) Vader. That's how not seriously players are taking them. They move too slow and take too much damage. I'm not saying they should be invincible, but when Luke Skywalker or Darth ####ing Vader enter the battlefield, I wanna see the other team running for the hills.

Eh, I think some of that is a product of anyone being able to be the hero as long as they snag the power up. Some people are really bad with them. If they're used properly, they're incredibly hard to kill. If you take Vader and jump him into 6 rebels all shooting at you from different angles, you're toast. If you go into a tunnel side entrance to the base and deflect shots, you can kill 10+ people no problem barely taking a scratch. Luke is also great against AT-STs in my experience.

Exactly. In the one video Luke was charging across the map to try to kill one guy and ended up getting stepped on by an AT-AT. How is that an indictment on the power of the heroes. It's more an indictment on people who don't PTFO!

Saw Luke take out both AT-ATs by himself similar to how you can do it by airstrike. It really depends on the player and the team he's up against.

Probably put somewhere around 6 hours in this weekend. Had a good time, but I think this one has fallen behind FO4 for a November launch purchase. Warhawk and MAG are still 1A and 1B for online shooters for me by a mile.

The gunplay feels very smooth to me. I liked what I've seen so far in limited play.
Too smooth. Although all FPS have this to a degree, here its whoever gets the drop on the other guy wins. End of story. All the gameplay also happens at extreme distances as well.

Also, the fact that aiming down the sights does nothing is weak.

Played this a bunch yesterday with my day off. Two major observations (in additional to a lot of what has already been said). Now, I haven't played battlefield before, so I don't know if this is typical of DICE games or not:

-Not a whole lot of variety of the weapons. They all felt really similar to me and didn't get a great feel for each one. The only exception is the "rifle" that in the description says it deals heavy damage at long range, but the range rating is the lowest of all the weapons. Maybe if your'e shooting at a crowd of people from far away, because the accuracy is nil. More effective it seems due to the fire rate at close range. I would hope there is more variety, or add ons in the full game to add replay value.

-LOVE the fact there are no killstreak rewards. I found the games on walker assault were determined by who was playing for the objective won, even if the other side was just trying to play slayer. That makes it fun. If there were killstreaks, especially for the Empire since the Rebel spawn points are so bad, this would be a horrible game. I felt it was balanced well and while the Rebels have an advantage if played well, the Empire won a lot of games when they played for objectives.

(My) flying is brutal.

on Walker Assault, Empire was faceroll and Rebels had to actually work hard to win, I felt.

I agree on the lack of killstreak rewards being good. It's painless to die, you even keep the non-vehicle powerups through death, and you spawn almost immediately.

That last point is fairly good to keep the action going, but I was so angry playing on the pod map, our team was down by 2 and it would never balance nor did anyone have a way to switch teams. With the lack of a respawn timer, it was nonstop zerg rush by the team up 2 to the pod. We outkilled them handily but eventually you just can't take all the rush and they cap the pod.

Respawn timer of maybe 5 seconds would be somewhat useful.

They key for the rebels I felt was keeping both uplinks active in in the second phase. I felt if you had one of two in the first and third phases, and kept both in phase 2 (the two easiest to hold/retake), you had a good chance of victory. Granted, it did take people actually trying to keep/hold the uplinks.

I didn't play a lot of the pod game. You're probably right in that it wasn't balanced well. I tried it a few times, and didn't get very competitive games, so I moved on. I also didn't like the board (played it mostly before I had the jump pack). Hopefully those kinds of things are what Beta is here to identify and fix?

I played a little more, but then deleted the beta. It's just not that fun... I kinda feel duped by how awesome the trailer was back from E3. There's just not enough there to hold my interest - too bad.

I am probably cancelling my pre-order. I am having far more fun with Destiny right now (just started it.....and love it).

The game looks gorgeous, but I am not paying 69.99 for a deluxe version then another $50 for a season pass. No single player campaign which to me was a nice thing in the first two Battlefronts. Star Wars is story based.

This feels like a simple shooter (which is not a bad thing) that looks great but will get boring fast. I can wait for it to be a lot cheaper and pick it up next year and catch right up.

I am going to snag Fallout 4 instead.

I am going to snag Fallout 4 instead.
If it's one or the other, I don't see how Fallout 4 loses. It looks amazing and isn't just a new story and new skin. It's moving gaming forward.
Fallout 4 clearly won out.

Star Wars Battlefront is way down the totem pole.....most likely next year in the spring sometime. FO4 will dominate my gaming time for hundreds of hours.
