STAR WARS: EP 7 ***SPOILER ZONE*** - Go here if you've seen it (2 Viewers)

Here are some pertinent responses from JJ in an interview he did. I liked the jab at Lucas in the first answer :)

==============================

So I tried to not forget the mistakes I’d made, but I also tried to focus on things that I find inspiring about cinema. I asked questions like “How do we make this movie delightful?” That was really the only requirement Larry and I imposed on each other: The movie needed to be delightful. It was not about explaining everything away, not about introducing a certain number of toys for a corporation, not about trying to appease anyone. This has only ever been about what gets us excited.

=================================

The script for VIII is written. I’m sure rewrites are going to be endless, like they always are. But what Larry and I did was set up certain key relationships, certain key questions, conflicts. And we knew where certain things were going. We had meetings with Rian and Ram Bergman, the producer of VIII. They were watching dailies when we were shooting our movie. We wanted them to be part of the process, to make the transition to their film as seamless as possible. I showed Rian an early cut of the movie, because I knew he was doing his rewrite and prepping. And as executive producer of VIII, I need that movie to be really good. Withholding serves no one and certainly not the fans. So we’ve been as transparent as possible.

Rian has asked for a couple of things here and there that he needs for his story. He is an incredibly accomplished filmmaker and an incredibly strong writer. So the story he told took what we were doing and went in the direction that he felt was best but that is very much in line with what we were thinking as well. But you’re right—that will be his movie; he’s going to do it in the way he sees fit. He’s neither asking for nor does he need me to oversee the process.
nice.

Its such a good feeling to really want to see a movie that is still years away

Well done JJ
less than a year and a half away if they hold to the release schedule of May of 2017 :)

There seems to be quite a few people who just can't get past the fact that Rey learned to use the force so fast, as if it's some kind of plot hole.

First of all, there's a million ways they could explain her use of the force.
But they didn't even use one. They just let her go out there and be Supergirl with no explanation. Left it for part 2 to explain. That's cheap to me.
I don't think it was cheap but it definitely was not the self-contained story Abrams promised it would be and that did disappoint me. What's funny to me is all the people criticizing this for being a re-hash of the first film but the first film was a self-contained story. The only real cliffhanger was what happened to Vader after Luke destroyed the Death Star. In this film nearly everything was left dangling except for Han. In that respect, this film was nothing like the first one.
That's why it's a rehash. They obviously didn't reshoot scene for scene the original movie. They borrowed many of the familiar elements to purposely overload peoples nostalgia sense.

The movie has good scenes and good acting. The characters have the potential to be interesting but this doesn't feel like its in the Star Wars galaxy. It feels like they picked up the people and moved them somewhere else and started a new story there. I'm disappointed in the concerted effort to avoid everything prequel. I know its so in fashion now to bash them and most will not have any problems ignoring them completely but world building the originals and prequels did was the best part of it. They fit each world into the whole and gave you a feel that this was a big galaxy. Everything in this movie felt like it was in the same solar system it all happened so close to each other. Hardly any time passes from beginning to end.

Hopefully the next one explains a lot of it so we're not left hanging till 9.
I don't think something is a re-hash if it's entirely different but we may just be quibbling about that. :)

I agree with you there was way too much set-up in this film I wanted more self-contained payoffs like the first film delivered. However, I do think what Abrams did best was make a Star Wars film. This, to me, was Star Wars in every sense of the word. Abrams hit a grand slam in that respect. Did it draw on nostalgia? Yup and that was smart after Lucas chit all over his own creation with those wretched prequels. Abrams needed to remind people what Star Wars really was and introduce new characters who hopefully people would be interested in and want to follow for three films. I think he did all that.

About R2 and why he woke up:

Abrams also explained why it was that R2 woke up at the end of the film, saying, "BB-8 comes up and says something to him, which is basically, Ive got this piece of a map, do you happen to have the rest? The idea was, R2 who has been all over the galaxy, is still in his coma, but he hears this. And it triggers something that would ultimately wake him up."
That was so ####### stupid.
Smokescreen. It's because Rey was there, but he doesn't want to say that.

I think Luke is able to trigger R2's on/off switch from afar using the force. Like an intergalactic Clapper if you will. I think he felt that #### was going down like how Obi-wan felt it when Alderaan was destroyed. I'm sure Luke got a similar feeling when that entire system was destroyed and probably also felt Han's death. So Luke knew #### was going down and probably thought that was enough sulking and feeling sorry for himself so he switched on R2 to let everyone find him and give him a ride back to civilization.

I said that the other day too. The R2 flashback scene looked an awful lot like a Vulcan mind meld scene. First thought I had watching it was Luke was implanting something in R2 and when Han died Luke triggered it and that's why R2 woke up and provided the map for people to find where Luke was at.

I really don't care about the R2 scene at all. He does what he always does. He shows up when the plot needs him. I had the least problems or thoughts about it.

Luke is kind of a ####

Who runs out when the going gets tough. You blame yourself, boo hoo. Lots of people #### up. Pick yourself up by the bootstraps and light that saber for the good of the cause. But no, he goes off and leaves everyone behind to do some soul searching while 5 planets get blown up by the bigger version of the death star
Isn't that kind of what Yoda and Obi-Wan had done in IV?

As Dad might say "Obi-Won has taught you well."

So my kid and I went to see it finally this morning. I liked it, but it seemed a bit of a carbon copy of episode IV.

Haven't read any of this thread, really, but I just saw an article that said the entire main cast will be back for the next one. Not sure if that meant everyone EXCEPT Ford for obvious reasons. Or that he'll be back in some form or whatnot. Odd.

It was mentioned a few posts ago.

Kathleen Kennedy said this in front of a premier audience in London in which Harrison Ford was present.

She might have just misspoke or it could be as simple as a Han flash back scene.

We already know Johnson asked JJ to add some items to his film, it could be that he requested that the flash back scene be filmed earlier while they had Ford available,

Sort of.

Not quite sulking but in hiding when the clone wars started and jedi were being hunted.

Bold is my thoughts.. At some point they HAVE to go back and explain why Kylo " jumped ship" so to speak

That started at the end of 3.

Yoda basically disappeared for 19 years in exile, fearing for his life at the end of 3. At least Obi Wan had a purpose to watch over Luke in those years while Yoda just watched from afar.

Maybe, though, unless ignoring the I-III, its not like we ever get a reason for the change in technology between the past and ships and the more crude looking xwings and millennium falcon. Ither than Lucas being a money grabbing whore with the prequels.

It ties into why Luke left. I think it's a lock we find out more about that.

The best I can come up with is that the empire reign caused so much destruction across the Galaxy that technology advancement came to a halt. Someone once mentioned comparing the 20's to the 30's in the US. The 20's would always seem newer and shinier than the 30's because of the times.

Also, there is a strong likelihood that the technology advancement of the droids slowed significantly because people feared what could happen again after the Droid army came into being.

Maybe a flashback to fill in the gaping holes in the back story.

Sure, my point is while we always want an explanation, we dont always get ine and are left to form theories which creates even more buzz.

Look how they did things with LOST and theories.

Ultimately Disney is in charge and they know what they're doing. They aren't going to F the fans here.

many of the answers in Star Wars come from the EU.

With Disney flushing that ENORMOUS data base of information as canon, we are likely to have more questions than answers until the EU catches back up in 5-7 years.

I think R2 waking up was a big part of the story since it signaled Luke's return.
So who cares how it happened. C3P0 said he was waiting for Luke to call him so you knew it would happen.
I'm interested in everything pertaining to Luke's disappearance.
But I see people coming up with these elaborate theories on why R2 woke up. It doesn't really matter because he did wake up and showed everyone his portion of the map. I don't entirely understand why he was missing a piece. But there's no real difference if he woke up because Luke called him or he finally was done charging after so many years.

Possibly but for me it's connected to Luke (and possibly Rey) and all things connected to Luke are of interest to me.

I think it is an interesting speculation that he woke up because Rey was there.

This is one small question that we likely won't ever see answered especially with JJ's lame answer to the question, which did not even match what we saw on the screen (unless JJ was just having his normal fun again with the fans)

I ignore anything JJ says.

To me it was obvious when Rey walked in, he turned on.

I thought you were convinced it was Luke that woke him up, not Rey?

Han is going to return as a Force ghost.

Yoda going into exile, he did have a purpose. It was to learn to comminicare with the nether world. He said this at the end of 3.

Obi-Wan felt Alderaan blow up cause he knew Leia was there, or should have been, so he had a connection there. Luke wakes R2 up cause the connection he has with Rey or he had a connection on the system that was blown up. It makes she's why the New Order blows it up cause it has to have some connection to Luke since they're looking for him.

My daughter, 16, just came home and is sitting at the kitchen table doing her home work.

I was looking at her and then I got up and went and dug out her class picture from first grade.

I told her to hold the picture up next to her face.

I have to say, if I am being honest, if she left me as a 5-6 year old and did not return until now, I do not think I would recognize her. I assume at 19-20 she will look even more different from the first grade pic.

I only did this to see if the "Han might not recognize his own daughter" theory could hold any water.

I was stating the theories out there that people were so hung up on. R2 has the force. Han dying triggered it. Luke used his cell phone.

I said it on Saturday or Friday in this thread it was Rey.

I saw the movie yesterday and read the last 6 or 7 pages of this thread....

Movie gets a 10/10 from me. Will see again, will buy it on Blu-Rey (haha)

Still can't figure out who the old man is at the very beginning? How did he acquire the map? Why did he give it to Poe? Where did Poe come from?

Really loving the theory that Rey and Ren are related somehow... either bro/sis or cousins. When Ren is trying to read her mind is the point where THE FORCE AWAKENS inside of her..imo.

What about Ben? He can feel the presence of his immediate family. If Rey is his sister why didn't he notice that?

The Force is strong with Selena Gomez.

I believe Yoda already knew this at the end of 3 as he had been taught/contacted by Qui Gon. It was Yoda who told Obi Wan at the end of 3 that he had specific training for him while he was watching over Luke.

If you remember earlier in 2, Yoda clearly hears Qui Gon say "No Anakin! No!" so Yoda has been in touched with that part of the force for at least a few years from a periphery.

There is also a deleted scene in 3 in which Qui Gon also tells Yoda how to do this even though we never saw it (and might be best ignored by those who hate Midiclorian talk :) )

I have read many people online say they felt Ben did recognize her. I did not get that feeling from my one viewing but enough people seem to think that way that I guess it could be possible.

What about Ben? He can feel the presence of his immediate family. If Rey is his sister why didn't he notice that?
I have read many people online say they felt Ben did recognize her. I did not get that feeling from my one viewing but enough people seem to think that way that I guess it could be possible.
I never got the impression he knew her; just recognized she had the Force. He also read her mind about how she was viewing Han as a father figure. If Ben knew Han was her father I'm sure he would've said something to her at the time to use against her, especially knowing that Rey was deserted.
