Yea I hate that Disney made a movie that they knew everybody would love.
Some of the comments in here are bordering on parody now.
the more I think about it, the more brilliant it was to rehash ANH. It brings the bond between the old (me) and new (my kids) together. In fact, we saw episode 7 one day after we watched episode 4. Neither of my kids mentioned one thing like, hey we saw this movie yesterday.I've said this before in here, ill say it again. Well done JJ. And im willing to bet that a large amount of people who say they didnt like it will still see 8 when it comes out
This was a reboot. Pure and simple. I know not every reboot can match the new Point Break, but as noted, a new generation can now start where we did, and allow the new twists come with the final two. Top notch graphics to update from what had been, by far, the best ever... 40 years ago!
I keep going back to the simplistic style of that original - its a galactic western. Good guys vs bad, boom boom KABOOM!
Plus, as a 42 year old, the scenes (i.e. going into the channels on the final approaches of the xwings) transported me back to being 5 years old and my first ever movie memories and emotions.
Just watched ANH last night. While the big points are certainly derivative, ANH handles the finer details way better. Everything about the galaxy that we need to know is given in little tidbits. Nothing obtrusive like Senate hearings or long exposition. They have brief conversations (like Obiwan with the force and even Han interjecting skepticism) explaining key things. We don't need random characters coming up out of nowhere to say "hey I'm not going to tell you how I got this ligtsaber but the force yea you got it kid, so have this thing."
We get the scene with the Imperial command debating the merits of kidnapping a senator and that set ups the entire power structure of the galaxy. Alderaan is mentioned by Obiwan at about the 40 min mark of the movie and it isn't destroyed till the 80 minute mark. We have a lot of time to digest that out heroes are headed to this planet and the Empire just destroys it merely as a test. We are invested in its destruction.
Luke was no where near overpowered. He hardly showed any force powers in the film at all. Once on the Falcon with the drone and at the end with the torpedo. But we hear from people like Biggs how good a pilot Luke really is. So its not a surprise when he is not only a mission to fly against the Empire ( cause let's face it they're desperate) but that he can hold his own. Yet even he still has trouble against a tie fighter and needs Wedge to bail him out. So he's not perfect.
Episode 7 is not a remake of ANH. They borrow lots of scenes and ideas from it and they keep it simple but TFA lacks the little details that made ANH great all for the sake of "mystery" and a big reveal later.
My rankings are still 5, 4, 6, 7, 3, 1, 2.
