I have had preliminary conversations with a friend about a small business venture/idea. We haven't discussed many details, just sort of talking out loud, and just, at a high level, exploring the concept.

I would be interest in exploring further, but don't know where to begin. 

1) How do you conduct market research?

2) How does financing work on the initial start-up costs?

3) Determining start-up costs

4) Determining location 

What else do I need to consider and where do I begin?

But you really need more details to get help.   Like what business sector is it in.

You also need to figure out how you want to legally set up your business...LLC, partnership, etc. Good luck.

1) Depends on the business and your goals.

2) Depends on the business and your goals.

I would first put together a SWAT analysis and put together a business plan to help you work through all the various questions you need to think through. Put that down on paper, if you need help in various areas then maybe you need to find a mentor or a more seasoned business partner. But if the business is small enough then you can learn by failure (not necessarily the business failing but trial and error).

For a huge majority of startups, you are limited to savings, credit cards, loans, and/or relatives.

 
Soooooooo dependent on type of business, offering, competition, scale etc...

Retail or office?  B2B or B2C?  Unique concept or jiggly competitive?  Product or service?  Professional or not?  Experience in the industry?  Any license or franchise opportunities?  Existing channels of distribution or starting market demand from scratch?

Give us more info. Guys in here are generous with their advice but you can't be coy.

You aren't close to ready to start your own business 

 
Do you have a local Small Business Association location near you? If you do begin there, they exist to help people get started.

 
Guessing it is retail of some sort if you are worried about location.   And perhaps a service if you don't have any manufacturing/distribution concerns.  Who is your target consumer and what benefit are you offering them?

 
If it's a message board with a suitable method for removing previously-quoted posts, I'll be happy to invest.
