Startup Dynasty Help (1 Viewer)

Trying to start a new dynasty league and looking for resources on a startup draft, optimal league size, rules, etc. does anyone have any advice or point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Lots of info out there if you do a quick Google search, one example: https://dynastyleaguefootball.com/2021/01/17/how-to-start-a-dynasty-league/

From my perspective, *who* is in the league is every bit as important as what the rules are. A couple of lame ducks can really spoil the experience, and the ramifications of unbalanced trades can last years. So I'd focus on recruiting people you feel are really into it and won't give up after a disappointing season or a trade that doesn't work out. I've been in 3 dynasty leagues for years and one of them is a rebuild as I was caught with too many Kenny Golladay/Allen Robinson types this season but I wouldn't dream of leaving the league, it's up to me to right the ship and I feel like I'm up to the challenge. You want folks who aren't gonna run the second adversity strikes. Good luck.

I would wholeheartedly suggest exploring an 'Empire' format of Dynasty.

I truly don't understand why people would be willing to sign off on a regular dynasty league with no defined reset or end point. I would go berserk if everyone else in my league decided to stop playing right as my rebuilt team is ready to dominate.

Also, empire leagues make future rule changes much easier as the NFL evolves (e.g. piece of cake switching over from 1QB to superflex when you're doing it at the reset).

This statement deserves emphasis. It sucks when a bad trade goes through in a redraft league, but at least it's over and done with by the following season. But when a weak owner can't bother to properly shop a superstar that they've decided MUST be off their team yesterday, and their buddy or whoever was first to know about it gets the advantage that tips the balance of power for years..... that's the absolute worst.

I would suggest a universal league chat that everyone has access to. Encourage a culture of notifying the league anytime you're actively shopping a superstar. If more people know that they're on the market, you're more likely to get trades of near market value. I guess that's not unique advice to dynasty though.

As commish make the rules before filling out the owners. Getting 12 people together and then hammering out the rules is a headache.
This 100%
Rules & bylaws, payouts, scoring, roster, any required deposits, process for replacing teams, etc.

League size is an important consideration. I like 12-14, but I play in a 16-team and it’s also fun - that said, it’s also an IDP, so there are more ways to win.

Also for consideration: IR size, whether there’s a taxi squad, and overall roster size.

Start-up draft is also important. I suggest slow auction draft. From my experience, that is the most fun way to begin a league.

Once you’ve built the framework, invite your best 11-13 pals, and there ya go!

Best of luck. I’m glad you started this topic - should be a fun one.

There are also sites like FFPC that handle it all for you, for a fee of course. And playing by their rules within the variations they offer. I’m in 2 FFPC leagues and I gotta say I love them. They’re both 12 team, 1 QB, TE premium leagues, and keep only 16 players (including a K and D) but I’ve found that format creates pretty active leagues for trading and pretty decent options on the wire for blind bid acquisition. If I were to add 1 more dynasty to my life, I’d probably add one of their superflex leagues to mix it up.

of course, if you want to make it all up from scratch, this is NOT the way to go.
