I know not much importance is given to kickers, but I'm strapped on my fantasy salary cap for my dynasty pool and need a backup kicker. Was looking at Dallas as I already have the Philly pk rookie. What's going on with the cowboys ? Who's the starting kicker this year?

Thanks a mil guys!

From Mike Herman's kicker thread:
Who is the favorite to win the Dallas K job? Will Buehler retain it when healthy or is Bailey the favorite regardless?
Bailey had the early lead, but it evened out recently. Plus they still have an injured Kai Forbath lurking in the background. Probably a slight edge to the healthy Bailey at the moment.

I read something in the past couple weeks that Bailey had been slightly better, but Buehler was a "Jones" guy and if it is close he will win based on that. This may have been on roto but definitely was in the past couple weeks, and Bailey had some short kickoffs yesterday.(Unless that was the plan)

Bailey got the opening kickoff to the goal line and a second kickoff 3 yards deep in the end zone. He said he was aiming for the goal line on the first kickoff. “I was just trying to hang it up there, give our coverage team time to run down, try to get them down inside the 20 instead of just a touchback,” he said. “It worked pretty well. I guess it kind of opened up, and the guy kind of popped loose. We can work on that next week.”link

The Cowboys should trade the Lions for Dave Rayner. Give up a 3rd rounder and let the guy kick a decade for you, he's solid.

Shayne Graham was signed today to compete. This guy is an upgrade for them IMO
I'm not so sure.
Graham was I believe the top kicker in NFL history when it came to accuracy and that was just a few years ago when he was in Cincy. Then he kicked very good for NE last winter in very bad conditions.Put him in a dome with a good offense and I think he could have a nice year in fantasy and in real life.

Oddly, I own Buehler and Graham in a dynasty league (yeah, scouting kickers aint a strength...I guess I should read more of Mike's stuff). I hope Graham does win the job as I concur.

Bump.... from NFL it appears that Bailey was 3/3 on field goals last night ranging from 37-41 yards... and Shane Graham only attempted 1 extra point.

Im assuming Bueler is out of it due to injury and innacuracy last year. I would think this being the 3rd game they were giving Bailey the dress rehearsal for the regular season just like the rest of the team and that, since Graham got released from 2 teams last year and 1 already this year, this indicates Baily is probably winning the job. One would think that Graham would have gotten at least 1 fg attempt if it was truly a dead heat at this point?

Looking a little deeper though it looks like Graham handled the kickoff duties kicking to the

-3,-5,5,5,2,-4..... so half into the endzone and half not.

But then again they are kickers and not real football players so who knows???? Thoughts? Herman to the red courtesy phone !!!!

Complicating things more: other sources are reporting that Graham got one of the three field goals against Minnesota. Bailey got the other 2.http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/news.cfm?id=0F985219-A22D-9FD1-3F455E6A89088F20

Not definitive, but I think the two by Bailey and one by Graham is the correct answer. The boxscores showing all three by Bailey are apparently incorrect.

His projections are the FBG kicker projections.http://subscribers.footballguys.com/2011/currentproj-pk-60.php

I know Dallas has very good skill positions, but they have an incredibility young OL and 4 kickers in camp. My thought is that even once thre is a winner he will be on short rope. Not the place to look for this is my kicker outside of the bye, but is a place to look for the guy after you put your guy on waivers because it is the bye week.

Many are expecting big (or at least very good) things from the Dallas offense this season - with Romo, Austin, Dez, Whitten and Felix, they certainly have weapons. Good offense typicially means good kicker numbers. While Dallas is currently carrying 4 kickers, most teams choose 1 and stick with him for the season (unless he gets hurt or is awful). Dallas' recent history is the same - they kept Buehler as the kicker all last season, Nick Folk the season before that. Most teams don't let "kicker battles" continue after cut-downs - they don't have the roster space to bring multiple players like that during the regular season.Another point is that Dallas plays in a dome. In my league, we have to roster 2 kickers - I ALWAYS make sure one of them kicks in a dome or in warm-weather cities (domes are more reliable though). Come fantasy playoff time, I don't want to start a kicker that's kicking in a blizzard, a monsoon or in high winds. Dome kickers also tend to attempt further field goals (for those who get bonuses at additional length). Once Dallas decides on a kicker, whoever it is has the potential to be a solid option. The thought of grabbing a kicker off waivers to start the season may not please many, but the Dallas kicker may be worth it.

My biggest counter to this would be when have we seen a 4 kicker battle? almost every year there are battles. but it is ususally two guys. Just smacks on instability that won't go away a week from now. I do understand the 'why" of wanting the Dallas kicker though.

Dave Rayner was flown in on Jones private jet, he was signed the moment he was released by Det. My guess is he will be the kicker for the Cowboys unless he falls flat on his face, and I also agree that the Cowboys kicker will be a top 10 scorer unless he just misses his chances.

I think he may have fallen and cant get up. 0 for 2 in your lone shot may mean someone else makes the team instead. But who?Jones supposedly hinted that Buehler will remain on the roster - but due to his strong kickoffs. Will they keep a 2nd for FG? If they keep Buehler AND Graham, things could get dicey, because they could then, theoretically, swap them if one struggles.

Any updates on this situation?
Last night they all sucked except Graham, cause he didn't get a kick. Rayner may have blown his shot by going 0-2

Buehler was 1-2

Forbath 0-1

What a mess this is.
Kicker issue solved, but Jerry Jones won't say whohttp://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4682936/kicker-issue-solved-but-jerry-jones-wont-say-who
Of coourse he wont say who - you have to keep the other teams guessing...you know, so they can't decide how to defend those FG attempts.

As BG said, it looks like Beuhler for at least the frist week. They do want his kickoffs. But after week 1, they sign a vet. Having the vet on the roster in week 1 makes them guarnatee the contract. So they get by with Beuhler for a week, then take a stab at a vet.
