Absolutely great news that Polamalu has singed an extension. As far as Madden goes, this guy had the balls to say today on his show "As I predicted, Troy Polamalu signed a contract extension today". What a moron -- I said it before and I'll say it again: Mark Madden may know a lot about hockey but he is NOT a good source of Steelers info.#1 - Troy said otherwise. Who said first-year Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin's initial training camp would be a lot tougher than any recent ones under longtime coach Bill Cowher?
Tomlin, who raised some eyebrows among the media and Steelers players when he set a schedule that included 15 two-a-day workouts, cut yesterday afternoon's run test short and ended the conditioning runs after only about half the players participated. And the test didn't appear to be that difficult, either, for those Steelers who ran it.
Tomlin's version of the run test included 16 sets of 110-yard runs or one mile. Most players jogged the distance, and breaks lasted at least 30 seconds between each run. Cowher's test included 14 40-yard sprints that had even the most in-shape players huffing and puffing.

"We were scheduled to do 16 of them at required times, based on positions," Tomlin said afterward. "[but] guys were doing so well that we decided to cut it back to 14. It didn't look like any of the guys were going to have a tough time making it [finishing the runs]. It was a testament to their preparation, and I take my hat off to them."
By Jim Wexell SteelCityInsider.comPosted Jul 23, 2007LATROBE – Contrary to what has been reported on the rumor mill the last few seasons, Troy Polamalu did not want to return home to the west coast. “What I really wanted is the west coast weather to come here. That was what I wanted,” he said after signing a four-year contract extension Monday to remain with the Steelers. “This is home,” he said. “I didn’t want to be a player that was jumping from team to team. I’ve always felt comfortable here. I think this organization and its tradition, what they have here is very legendary in that sense and I always wanted to be a part of that.” He’ll be a part of that at least through the 2011 season. He signed a $33 million extension that includes $15.375 million in signing and roster bonuses. He’ll make $2.85 million in salary this season. Polamalu’s annual salary will top out at $6.6 million in 2011. The contract makes him the highest paid safety in the NFL, but that was not the driving motivation behind his negotiations. “First and foremost I wanted it to be a fair contract,” he said. “A lot of people are making a lot of money out there, so I wanted it to be very fair and I wanted it to be here and those are the most important things.” Polamalu, 26, is a three-time Pro Bowler and was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2005. He’s accomplished so much in such a short period he was asked what else he has to look forward to. “Four Super Bowls in a row,” he said. Polamalu was asked to explain what the contract means to him. “It means that I have to work harder and go out and earn it. It’s very exciting for my wife and I. We’ve felt very welcome in this city and I think this contract really puts our roots down here.” Polamalu said he doesn’t have plans for the money, that he and his wife Theodora will continue to “live the same lifestyle we’ve been living.” He denied having any plans to purchase the Johnstown franchise in the American Indoor Football League. “Oh, no, I have no idea about that,” he said. “It’d be pretty fun though.” CONDITIONING TEST Polamalu spoke to reporters after Coach Mike Tomlin’s revamped conditioning drill. The players were scheduled to run 16 100-yard sprints in approximately 15-20 seconds with 45 seconds of rest. The drill was stopped after 14 sprints because, according to Tomlin, “it didn’t look like anyone would have a tough time completing it.” In other words, it was too easy. “It was a lot different,” said Polamalu. “I don’t want to say too many bad things because I want them to keep doing this run. It wasn’t too challenging.” FANECA’S BLUES Alan Faneca showed up in a full beard and longer hair than normal, but that wasn’t what distinguished Faneca from his normal light-hearted self. He ran his 100s with an angry look on his face. Faneca, though, said that was not the case. “Just focused,” he said. “I knew I had a lot of eyes on my so I was just doing my thing.” Faneca, of course, is entering the final year of his contract and told reporters at minicamp that this would be his last year with the team. He also said, at the time, that he would have a hard time remaining a team captain. He was asked yesterday if he’d still serve if Tomlin chose him as captain. “I still stand by what I said. I don’t think I can be,” Faneca said. “I think the team’s going in a new direction and I think there are some guys in the locker room ready to step up that need to step up and start filling some of those roles.” TIMMONS REPORTS, DOESN’T RUN Those who were exempted from the run test were players who showed up for at least 44 of the 50 voluntary spring workouts. First-round pick Lawrence Timmons was exempt because the staff is cautious about a groin injury that kept him out of spring practices. “I’m healthy,” Timmons said. “But I’m going to take it day to day, like not rushing anything, like rehabbing all the time, you know, just work out the necessary muscles that you do when you’re going full speed. I’m going to be smart about it.” Timmons said he has already run sprints with trainer John Norwig and reported no pain or discomfort. MITCHELL PROMOTED Defensive line coach John Mitchell was promoted to assistant head coach last month. The move was announced yesterday. “I know all of the detail work that Mike’s going to have to go through in his first year, so it’s going to be my job to get to a lot of those to free him up to do his job,” said Mitchell, who’s in his 14th season with the team. Mitchell, of course, is a pioneer in breaking down racial barriers. He was Bear Bryant’s first African-American at Alabama and later became the first African-American defensive coordinator in the SEC. “John Mitchell’s a very respected coach in this league by his peers,” said Tomlin. “He’s been here a long time. He’s been a loyal, tireless worker. I felt like it was the right thing to do.” INJURY SITUATION Wide receiver Santonio Holmes missed the run test because of a minor surgical procedure that is “non-football related,” said Tomlin. “He’s going to be watching for a day or two. It’s a non-issue.” Also expected to sit out the first practice or two are NFL Europe linebacker Derek Rehage (thumb) and Verron Haynes (knee). The three players

Morning has broken
So much for the easy stuff.
While Monday's run test may have been easier than what many of the players expected, Tuesday's opening practice of training camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers involved hitting - and plenty of it.
After some position drills, head coach Mike Tomlin brought the linebackers and running backs together for a little backs on backers - something that had never been done in the morning drills under Bill Cowher.
By my scoring, the offense won the drill by a slight margin, with undrafted rookie running back Gary Russell showing very good skills as a blocker on blitz pickup. Russell stoned Clint Kriewaldt, Lawrence Timmons, Larry Foote and Richard Koonce in his one-on-one blocking, showing good leverage.
On the defensive side, James Harrison, as usual, looked good in this drill, dominating Willie Parker, Kevan Barlow, Larry Croom and getting good pressure on Najeh Davenport despite being fought to a draw. That's four experienced NFL running backs Harrison went up against.
Davenport had the drill's most embarrassing moment, getting run over by rookie linebacker LaMarr Woodley on the final repetition of the drill for a pancake into the quarterback.
After that, it was on to 10 minutes of 9-on-9 inside running drills with only the corners and wide receivers not taking part. There was plenty of hitting here and it almost looked like a goal-line drill with its intensity and hitting.
Team portion of the morning practice came next, with the only notable moments being fumbled center exchanges by Ben Roethlisberger and Chukky Okobi, and later by Sean Mahan and Charlie Batch.
Nate Washington opened at wide receiver in place of Santonio Holmes, who's out after having some kind of minor surgical proceedure. Holmes was at practice and is moving around fine, so he shouldn't be out long.
During punt drills, the return men were Washington, Willie Reid, Dan Sheldon, Cedrick Wilson, Jovon johnson, Chris Jackson and, yes, Ricardo Colclough. Only Wilson mishandled a punt, though.
Ed Bouchette chat transcript 07/24/07

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Ed Bouchette: I'm at sunny Saint Vincent awaiting your question as much as a soak in a whirlpool after this morning's tough first practice.
HinesWizzle: How did they look this morning?
Ed Bouchette: Pretty good. All dressed up in their helmets and jerseys and shoulder pads. Coach Mike Tomlin wore all black.
GjSteel: Hi Ed, after the Colts gave Dwight Freeney..that ridiculous contract...was there a worry inside the Steeler organization..that Troy..would have increased his salary demands?
Ed Bouchette: maybe he did increase them. Doesn' t matter, that's a what-if that no longer applies.
Justin_K: Do you think Clark Haggans will finally be relieved of his starting job this season? He continues to underproduce.
Ed Bouchette: I expect Haggans to start and rookie LaMarr Woodley to play on passing downs as a rusher. Woodley has looked good, big, physical. Tomlin would like to give those starters a break too.
Gametime: It seems there are some on the team with internal conflicts - Obviously Alan Faneca is upset and there have been reports on Hines Ward expressing some ill comments. I know it is very early but is there any evidence this is being a negative at camp?
Ed Bouchette: I think you've been reading old news. Ward no longer seems to have a problem and Faneca's position has been written and talked about to death. Nothing ever goes smoothly, either.
LA_Steeler_Lover: I read an article this morning showing the current 'power'rankings in the NFL and the Steelers were no where to be found - what's your take - are we that weak this year?
Ed Bouchette: I'd put them in the upper third to middle.
Parkersburger: What made the first day of practice so tough?
Ed Bouchette: Lot of physical play.
Boots: What is the absolute best we can expect coming into this season?
Ed Bouchette: Coming into it? Everyone healthy and ready to go. At the end of it? A Super Bowl victory.
steeeeeefullll: How does Barlow look? Is he running yet?
Ed Bouchette: He looked OK in this morning's practice, looked good on the pass protection drill against the linebackers.
gametime: Was the timing of Troy's contract meant to send a message to Faneca?
Ed Bouchette: I think it was timed for the opening of training camp because I believe they could have finished it last week if they wanted. I don't think they worried about the timing as far as Faneca, but I do believe they were happy that Troy's new contract stole Alan's thunder on the first day.
IzzyB: Do you think a tougher camp is what the Steelers need after a poor season?
Ed Bouchette: I think the new coach wants to establish a tone early in this camp. All coaches do that. I think what they need to do is play better and however that develops, if it develops, will be a good thing for them.
Steelerzfan: Ed, what do you think of the ease of the running drills yesterday?
Ed Bouchette: It was OK with me. I was tired of watching all those 40-yard sprints. Really, after today's practice, that run test mattered little.
steeeeeefullll: Is Tomlin really a tough coach or is it all hype?
Ed Bouchette: He's not a Tom Coughlin-tough guy. His practices are tough, at least this first one was, and he's no-nonsense in many ways, but he's also upbeat and seems to get along with his players.
LA_Steeler_Lover: It seems to me that in recent times we have made efforts to improve/solidify many aspects of the team except the OL line. Now with the Faneca situation and all how do think our OL line will shape up?
Ed Bouchette: That O-Line should be intriguing, first to see if any of these young guys can knock off a veteran starter, and second to see how they deploy their depth. Will Willie Colon play guard and tackle so he will be active on game day? What happens if Okobi does not win the center's job, do they cut him? Ask him to take a cut in his $2 m salary?
steeeeeefullll: Will the Steelers finish better than 7-9?
Ed Bouchette: Why, you want to put a bet down? I would say yes, but I never thought they'd go as low as 8-8 last season after a Super Bowl. I think they'll be decent this year, a playoff contender.
Eric: I have not heard Tomlin talk about switching to 4-3 or cover 2 at all, yet speculation is rampant. What do you see happening both this year and into the future?
Ed Bouchette: Again, old news. Tomlin has talked about sticking with the 3-4 since March.
Justin_K: Do you foresee Big Ben bouncing back to have a big year? Or do you believe he will struggle again with the added responsibilities?
Ed Bouchette: I think he'll bounce back. How big is another question. He showed in his first two seasons he has the ability and I think he wants to show it again. He'll need help around him as well.
Jtown: Ed, since Cowher is gone, is Ike out of the "dog house"? Do you think he'll be the "comeback" player of the year, or is that solely on the shoulders of Ben?
Ed Bouchette: Ike did not get into the dog house until later in the year because he did not perform up to Bill Cowher's expectations. He's been re-established as a starter and must continue to perform to keep that job.
steeeeeefullll: Ben looked like he is in good shape...has he been as dedicated in the off season as people have been reporting?
Ed Bouchette: I wasn't around him to see how dedicated he was but the coaches believe he did work harder and Ben did say he was in his bes shape. We'll see.
BGI: Is there any indication Coach Tomlin is 'tinkering' with the 3-4?
Ed Bouchette: Coaches always tinker. It's in their job description. Brett Keisel will be the most obvious tinker-ee, moving all over the defense.
Justin_K: Keeping with the linebacker questions, do you believe Joey Porter will be missed on the field?
Ed Bouchette: No, except perhaps on the depth chart. He underperformed on the field. He was a good leader, and that may affect them a little, but I think James Harrison will surprise some people. They just develop some depth, however, because Harrison was excellent as the No. 3.
gametime: Has the groin injury Timmons had earlier cleared up or is this still a problem?
Ed Bouchette: Everyone says he is 100 percent, including Lawrence Timmons. He got through this morning's practice OK.
Jon: What is wrong with Santonio Holmes?
Ed Bouchette: No one's saying. I don't think it's a big deal. I asked Santonio today and he told me he could not tell me.
GjSteel: The projected salary cap is going to $116 million -- isn't it true the Steelers can basically pay who ever they want ... they just choose not to give Faneca the number he is looking for?
Ed Bouchette: Oh, they could give Faneca MORE than he wants, if they wanted to. Then, when it comes time to pay Ben his big contract next year or sign some other good, young player to a long-term deal, they may not be able to come up to their price because of the salary cap. Remember, no matter what the salary cap, it's still a pie to be divvied up among the players. Not all players can get what they want because the pie will never be that big.
Gilbert_Gottfried: More cliches, Tomlin or Cowher?
Ed Bouchette: Cowher, although he fractured them many times. I wish I had written them all down, like the day he thought the Raiders were trying to circumcise a rule.
choppers: Through the mini-camps & OTA's, have any of the rookies impressed the coaches?
Ed Bouchette: LaMarr Woodley.
Wexford_Wag: Do you think the offense can really rebound this season when Coach Arians says he will run still run 60% of the "old" offense? Also, what is his reputation around the league as a coach? Coach Cowher never mentioned him much.
Ed Bouchette: Bruce Arians is a good, veteran offensive coach with a good track record. The "new" Cleveland Browns had their only good season when he was their coordinator and they were scoring like crazy.
D: Do you think the Steelers are at their best when their the underdog like they are coming into this season?
Ed Bouchette: You mean like 1975 or 1979? Or, after coming off that 15-1 season and then winning a Super Bowl in the 2005 season? No.
Stillers.com: Ed, has the battle between Timmons and Harrison begun to un fold yet? If so, who has the upper hand?
Ed Bouchette: Harrison. I think he'll keep the starting job this year.
Brooklyn_Steel: How has Ben looked? Passes on target?
Ed Bouchette: Calm down, there's been one morning practice with plenty to go.
Justin_K: Do you believe Faneca is worth keeping, even at an insane price?
Ed Bouchette: I think Alan Faneca is a great guard, consistent, and a good team player. But it's the team's duty to decide when a player wants to much vs. how much he will contribute over the life of a contract. The team also has other players to worry about. I do think Faneca is worth being among the highest paid guards in the league; unfortunately, he may have to wait until next year to get it somewhere else.
D: Could Dallas Baker be a no.3 or 4 receiving threat this season?
Ed Bouchette: I really don't think so. He's looking at either making it as No. 5/6 receiver or practice squad.
fool: How well can we expect the special teams to do this year?
Ed Bouchette: If they produce the way they practice, they should be great. I've never seen so much attention paid to special teams.
Stefan_Djordjevic: Any truth to the rumors that have Cowher going to Washington and looting the Steelers front office (Colbert and Kahn)?
Ed Bouchette: You mean, as opposed to the rumors of Cowher going to Cleveland? Or the NY Giants? Or Carolina? Or ... Kevin Colbert, by the way, is under contract through 2010 and the Rooneys aren't about to let him go with Bill to another team before that.
crowe7337: Last year, everyone talked about how Willie Parker came into camp much more muscular. Anyone come into camp this year that you can tell has worked hard this off-season?
Ed Bouchette: Yes, Levon Kirkland looks good. He dropped a lot of weight since he balooned up after his playing days. He's in camp for a week as a scouting intern. I noticed Kendall Simmons more than anyone. He's lost some of his gut and looks trim, yet says he's been able to maintain his overall weight.
Brooklyn_Steel: Is that silly Mascot there and why did the Rooney's get one after all of these years?
Ed Bouchette: No, haven't seen him. Hope not to. Someone lost their head when they agreed to that.
Jerry_Micco: Ed, how often do you hangout at Sharkys?
Ed Bouchette: Had 2 beers there last night.
RR2: I have heard a lot of people around here talk about Big Ben and the offense will struggle this year. I feel if they use the two tight end formations this could be a good year for them. Do you agree?
Ed Bouchette: I hope they don't use too many tight ends. One or two is way more than enough.
da1130: Will Mahan start @ guard or center?
Ed Bouchette: I believe Mahan was brought here to start at center. It's up to Chukky Okobi to disprove that.
SteelCity: What are the chances Cedrick Wilson gets cut? He looked soft last year and if Reid and Washington step up is there any need to keep him on the team?
Ed Bouchette: I would be stunned if Wilson were cut. He should be their No. 3 receiver, at worst No. 4, a good, quick veteran who can get deep.
GjSteel: Do you think Anthony Smith beats out Ryan Clark?
Ed Bouchette: That will depend on Smith and Clark over the next few weeks, truly, because the coach has an open mind about it.
steeler_fan88: Any chance that we get any deals done for our other players in the last year of their contracts?
Ed Bouchette: They actually may try, but I don't think it will happen.
Ed Bouchette: Thanks for the many questions, and the quality. We'll do it again next week. In the meantime, send me questions for my daily Q&A and watch for our new daily video production from camp.

STEELERS SCOPING OUT THE VICK GENE POOL
Last week, a reader tried to tell us that the Steelers would soon be signing free-agent quarterback Aaron Brooks. We ran the thing up the flagpole with some of our sources, and couldn't corroborate it.
We had no reason to doubt the tip that we'd receive, and we thought about posting it. But then we kept coming back to the fact that these are the Pittsburgh Steelers we're talking about. One of the most respected franchise in all of sports (with the exception of an unfortunate e-mail incident and a practice-squad pimp).
Why in the hell would the Pittsburgh Steelers be sniffing around Mike Vick's cousin?
But it's true. While the Steelers have not yet signed Brooks, John Clayton of ESPN.com reports (by way of KFFL) that the Steelers have visited with Brooks.
Presumably, Brooks would compete with Charlie Batch to serve as the primary backup to Ben Roethlisberger.
The tipster who pointed the story out to us last week explained that new coach Mike is driving the bus on this one, and that Tomlin likes Brooks in part because they both are from the same general area in Virginia. (We have yet to purchase any of the available online "make me into a football scout" training programs, but we have a feeling that "real" NFL scouts base decisions on ability, not geography.)
Brooks had a couple of decent years with the Saints, but thereafter regressed badly. He was not good at all last season in Oakland.

STEELERS SCOPING OUT THE VICK GENE POOL
Last week, a reader tried to tell us that the Steelers would soon be signing free-agent quarterback Aaron Brooks.
True. But I think I would rather have Batch as #2 than Brooks.Brooks >>> St Pierre. As a #3 for and a minimum contract.
I dont think anyone would argue otherwise. But Batch gets hurt alot. So a #3 behind him, can see playing time like a #2 in short order.True. But I think I would rather have Batch as #2 than Brooks.Brooks >>> St Pierre. As a #3 for and a minimum contract.
They usually only keep 2 QBs though don't they?I dont think anyone would argue otherwise. But Batch gets hurt alot. So a #3 behind him, can see playing time like a #2 in short order.True. But I think I would rather have Batch as #2 than Brooks.Brooks >>> St Pierre. As a #3 for and a minimum contract.
When they had Kordell, who was an ironman. But last year they had 3.Ben and Charlie would have toshow more durability to not have a 3rd guy sticking around and practicing. They usually only keep 2 QBs though don't they?I dont think anyone would argue otherwise. But Batch gets hurt alot. Yeah, he probably wants back up money and/or position.Steelers need 3rd string money and position.FWIW tonight Rob King with FSN Pittsburgh said that the Steelers were no longer interested in Aaron Brooks.

Wednesday, July 25, 2007By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteSpy gamesReceiver Hines Ward had the quote of the day, when talk at lunchtime turned to Cowher."I thought I saw him up in the sky box looking down on us," Ward said, referring to the new press box at Saint Vincent's Chuck Noll Field, where the Steelers practice. "Maybe he was scouting -- I mean spying -- for the Cleveland Browns."Camp observationsRookie linebacker LaMarr Woodley is going to be one heck of a pass rusher. It was only the first day of drills and the running backs hate linebackers on backs drill -- a pass protection, one-on-one drill -- but Woodley ate Najeh Davenport for lunch, twice. That followed up a great spring for Woodley."I thought he did well in that drill," coach Mike Tomlin said. "He showed what he's capable of. He's a rush man. It's somewhat of a mismatch sometimes when LaMarr Woodley gets on a running back, so really you kind of expected him to get after some folks and I think he handled himself and handled the drill pretty well."
I try to keep expectations in check with rookies, ESPECIALLY this early, but is anyone else getting a feeling that the Steelers got an absolute steal in Woodley?

Should hopefully compensate for the reach for Timmons.I try to keep expectations in check with rookies, ESPECIALLY this early, but is anyone else getting a feeling that the Steelers got an absolute steal in Woodley?
Things are sounding good. May his greatness erase the name "Alonzo Jackson" from our collective memory.I try to keep expectations in check with rookies, ESPECIALLY this early, but is anyone else getting a feeling that the Steelers got an absolute steal in Woodley?

Agreed. Obviously, we have nothign to go on yet, but I think it's going to take a couple of years to find out how good/bad that pick was. Timmons is clearly a much better fit for a 4-3 and is very, very raw. I don't expect him to make any significant impact for a couple of years, probably until they switch to cover-2 full-time. But, remember - the guy they compared him to is ernie Sims, who manned the position at FSU before Timmons. Sims was projected as a late first, early second round pick and ended up being a reach at #9 to Detroit, and the guy was very good in his first year. Timmons, it has been said, has more upside than Sims and more physical talent, so we need to wait a while before passing judgment on him.Woodley, on the other hand, looks like he can make an impact right away as a situational pass rusher and also appears to be the ideal 4-3 DE.Should hopefully compensate for the reach for Timmons.I try to keep expectations in check with rookies, ESPECIALLY this early, but is anyone else getting a feeling that the Steelers got an absolute steal in Woodley?Unless injuries cloud his career, he's going to be a good one. While it was a slight reach at 15, who on the board was a better option at that spot?
Meh. The jury is out.I would have much preferred we traded back (much like the Panthers did one pick ahead of us), and grabbed Staley, Grubb or even Beason.Should hopefully compensate for the reach for Timmons.I try to keep expectations in check with rookies, ESPECIALLY this early, but is anyone else getting a feeling that the Steelers got an absolute steal in Woodley?Unless injuries cloud his career, he's going to be a good one. Gald that the rumor wasn't true....
Man you guys are tough, let's give the guy a season in pads before we start calling him Huey....Should hopefully compensate for the reach for Timmons.I try to keep expectations in check with rookies, ESPECIALLY this early, but is anyone else getting a feeling that the Steelers got an absolute steal in Woodley?
I've been looking for a good source for camp reports. Good find here. Not going to keep cutting and pasting every day, but until the end of camp check Lolly's blog everyday. He has tons of updates from camp:
