Stephen King's The STAND (1 Viewer)

It's gonna suck... "CBS Films" hasn't made a really good movie yet, and hasn't put a lot of money into the ones they've made, this is beyond the scope of anything they've ever attempted. And shrinking it to 2-2.5 hours will ruin it further.

There is no indication on how many films it will be.

How about this - if it's any less than a trilogy it's going to suck.

It could be a trilogy and still suck.

Previous movie adaptations of King novels have set a pretty high bar. I hope this one can live up to its glorious ancestors.

If there's one thing I know about Stephen King, it's that he would love to have a thread entitled "booyeah" announce his movie's arrival.

The problem with most Stephen King books that they don't translate to the silver screen is the way King constructs a novel. He likes to start his first chapter 6 weeks in the past, then you get a week in the future by the end of part I, and then he sends you 12 weeks in the future, and it somehow makes a lot of sense when you read it. The clues are cleverly hidden until he wants you to find them. His stories are very satisfying reads, but when you put them on a chronological timeline, they lose some of the key plot twists, that if you were reading would make your fingers want to keep reading. In the movie, you kind of can guess a lot of it, and its not nearly as satisfying.

Only one film transcended the book, the Shining. And that was only because of brilliant performances by Scatman Crothers and Jack Nicholson.

:goodposting: This makes me sad. Why can't someone do this correctly?!?!

Gonna be pretty hard to top the "Don't Fear the Reaper" opening scene of the miniseries.
I thought the 1st part of the series - when Capt Trips arrived - was pretty cool.....Loved "Eve of Destruction" too - I just didnt like the cast of the survivors and the 2d half as much. Can they redo "It" next? My fave King book with the Stand and they use JAck Tripper, John Boy and Judge Harry....ugh!

Plus Venus Flytrap and that kid from Breaking Away. As bad as most of King's adaptations have been, that's gotta be the worst since it had potential and was such a great book.

That's an awfully big threshold. Few films in any genre can live up to the brilliance that was Maximum Overdrive.
Sure there are some turkeys but I can think of at least 10 movie adaptations that are good:Stand By Me

The Green Mile

Shawshank Redemption

The Dead Zone

Misery

Carrie

The Shining (first version)

'Salems Lot (first version)

Pet Sematary

Dolores Claiborne

Too much different from the book to really be called an adaption. What about The Mist?

Despite my reluctance based on those who had told me they had read it in the past, I just finished the book a few weeks ago and found it overrated. Tell me why it's great.

Much like The Dark Tower, I always thought this story would be best told as an HBO series rather than through movies. So many characters and so much that could be added, I think you could get 25-30 quality episodes out of it.

I also thought they did a good job with Needful Things. Love The Stand so I'd watch it.

Loved the concept that was back in the 80s of machines taking over in Maximum Overdrive and the movie was ok. Trucks was much better imo.
Shtick, right?

Nice list.

You left out a few other 1980's underrated gems in:

Christine

Silver Bullet

Pet cemetary?

:X

Horrible, Horrible movie

I'd say quality movies were only The Shining, Green Mile, Shawshank and Misery.

Hated Carrie, aforementioned Pet cemetary as well, and gave the rest a wide berth (didn't like the book 'Dolores Claiborne' either)
