Steroid question. (1 Viewer)

Just something I was wondering about. Shawn Merimann got a 4 game suspension for testing positive for Steroids. My question is...how long does it take for the human body to revert back to pre-steroid levels of stregth/endurance? Was Shawn still taking the field after his suspension with an illegally enhanced body? I like Merriman and am by no means attacking him. I am just wondering if the NFL is applying common sense in the suspension timelines and to the issue of steroids. If drs/researchers claim you're "back to normal" after not using for 4 weeks then I support the length of suspension. I just don't think its fair to allow guys on the field if they are still reaping the physical rewards of the illegal enhancement.

The answer to your question would depend on what type of steriod Merriman was taking. Injectible would be somewhere between 3-6 months. Oral would be somewhere between 1-4 weeks. My guess would be that Merriman use Injectible sometime after last season ended, did a cycle (starting Februaryish and ending April-Mayish). Just my guess.

Your question would also assume that Merriman just stopped using altogether instead of switching to an undetectable steroid. I highly doubt this is the case.

Based upon his level of play vs NE, looks like the effects of Merriman's steroids wore off completely around New Year's Eve.

He was very pedestrian and a major reason that SD lost the game.

The length of the suspension and how long steroids take to leave the system have nothing to do with each other. Its a positive drug test, period. 4 games for the second positive test, the drug that makes you positive is irrelevant.

That's wrong. The steroid policy and the "street drug" policy are seperate things. A player is suspended four games for his FIRST positive steroid test.

So what do you guys feel about it? Should the length of suspension (1st offense) coorelate directly to the length of time it takes for the detected steroid or other illegal performance enhancement supplement drug to lose its effect on one's physical performance (i.e 4 weeks for oral steroid if that is true research and 6 months for injectable steroid)? From a common sense/fairness standpoint, other clean NFL players and teams should not have to lineup against drug enhanced players. That just makes common sense to me.
