Steve Perry (Journey) Resurfaces . . . After 19 Years (1 Viewer)

Awesome...such a great voice.

Still had some of it...but could tell he could not do a full set today without losing it I wouldn't think.

He was obviously rusty but there were moments when the "old" Steve shined through. I hope this inspires him to get his voice in shape and make some more recordings.

I'd love to see him back recording again. Is it even possible to work your voice back to the extent he'd need to do it?

His voice will never be close to what it used to be, and that's part of the reason why he has mostly stayed out of the spotlight for the past 27 years. But based on this YouTube clip there's no reason why he couldn't make another record similar to his 1994 solo album.

pretty sure he'll make it any way you want it.

I thought he went away because he had a #### ton of health problems,
Ditto. Specifically, I thought the case was that the rest of the band wanted to tour, and couldn't wait for Perry to recover. Coulda sworn, also, that Perry had early-stage throat cancer but was successfully treated -- albeit with a big hit to his voice.

Off to Wikipedia to get the 411.

EDIT: Guess I hallucinated the throat-cancer thing. Quoth Wikipedia:

Journey's classic 1981–85 lineup reunited in 1996 to record Trial by Fire. The album was a huge success, entering the Billboard charts at No. 3 and going platinum before year's end, but its triumph was short-lived. Before the Trial By Fire tour could begin, Perry suffered a hip injury while hiking in Hawaii and was unable to perform. Perry was diagnosed with a degenerative bone condition and a hip replacement was required, and as he was reluctant to rush into the surgery, Perry desired to postpone the tour. Due to the long wait between the album's release and the tour's postponed kick-off date, as well as the absence of Journey's iconic frontman, Journey fans were losing hope for the band's future.

Meanwhile, long-time Journey drummer Steve Smith resigned. (Smith had rejoined, along with original Journey bassist Ross Valory).

The remaining members waited until 1998, nearly 17 months after Perry's injury, before making a decision on Journey's future. Growing impatient and realizing the window of opportunity was closing to follow up the success of the platinum-selling Trial By Fire LP with a world tour, Journey members Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon met with Perry and presented an ultimatum that he either undergo hip replacement surgery so the tour could proceed upon his recovery, or a replacement singer would be hired. Perry, still hesitant to undergo surgery and now apparently upset at his bandmates' intractability and their perceived meddling in personal health decisions, decided to leave Journey. Perry's vocal duties were later taken over by Steve Augeri of Tall Stories, and nearly two years after the album's initial release, Journey began its long-postponed tour.

All jokes aside, it's really bizarre that he chose to share the stage with the Eels for his grand return. I like the eels just fine, but they're about 900,000th on the list of bands I would guess in the GUESS WHAT CONCERT I WENT TO AND STEVE PERRY WAS THERE? trivia game

I never realized it was a hip that got him off stage. Man has, or I guess had, a very powerful voice.
I could have sworn I remembered hearing something about Perry's voice getting damaged sometime ago (like back in the late 90s). Maybe it was just prosaic overuse, though, and not an actual illness or disease affecting his voice.

I thought it was a version of what got Styx guy. Overused voice and stage fright. Was surprised by the hip thing.
