Steve Perry (Journey) Resurfaces . . . After 19 Years (1 Viewer)

Strange amount of hate in here.
All too often, "big in the 80s" = "backlash 'hate' on the Internet".
To be fair I didn't really like Journey in the 80s either.
Journey has aged as well or better than any of the AOR era bands.
That may be true but since I didn't really like them in the first place...
Any way you want it.

well that's because you suck.

All jokes aside, it's really bizarre that he chose to share the stage with the Eels for his grand return. I like the eels just fine, but they're about 900,000th on the list of bands I would guess in the GUESS WHAT CONCERT I WENT TO AND STEVE PERRY WAS THERE? trivia game
This just shows the genius of Steve Perry. He knew that for 20 years people were looking for him so he picked the least likely place to be spotted.

I HEARD STEVE PERRY ALWAYS WEARS A FOGHAT WHEN HE GOES TO KANSAS AND BOSTON BECAUSE HE TRAVELS LIKE A SUPER-TRAMP OOL!

Kind of odd that I was watching a documentary on Saturday showing how Arnel became the lead singer of Journey. Then Sunday, Perry resurfaces.

Mind blown

Your mom is album oriented.

Dang.

These 70's and 80's high-pitched rock singers all ended up losing their voices. Some still sing, but they don't sound anything like they used to. It's the low register guys like James Taylor or Darius Rucker that will sound the same as long as they feel like singing.

I remember how bummed I was when my favorite lead vocalist (Steve Walsh from Kansas) started losing his upper register. But it happens to all of them. Something about elasticity of the vocal chords.

As for Perry, he still sounded great from a technical standpoint. Stayed on pitch and had some decent runs. But couldn't get near the high notes he had recorded years ago.

Robert Plant would be another example. Even women tend to lose it. Stevie can't do what she used to.

Oddly enough, Steve Perry is a natural baritone who happened to have insane range back in the day. I wonder if he could just start recording as a baritone and still sound recognizably like "Steve Perry". A lot of "Faithfully" is recorded in his natural range, and it still sounds like him, so maybe.

Steve made a second appearance with The Eels last night, and his voice was in much better shape:

Thanks for this link.

It was gutsy for Perry to attempt "Open Arms" with his diminished range. He doesn't approach the "... wanting you neaaaar" line the same way he did 30 years ago. But the Eels played it in a lower key to match Perry's natural baritone range, and it sounded great. "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" was similarly lowered, and Perry nailed it.

It was great to see him out there again and he seemed to be having a blast. Good for him.
