Steve Smith (Car) will be... (1 Viewer)

Every year I spend countless hours studying fantasy stats/situations, scouring the waiver wire, evaluating the strengths/weaknesses of my opponents rosters. I develop a very good understanding of who is performing and who isn't; who I want to trade for and who I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. I make many WW pick-ups, I inquire about countless trade opportunities, I even manage to execute a few trades every year. And then once the trade deadline has passed...or I've been ousted from the playoffs, I only pay attention to the SB-contending teams. I lose track of what's going on in the rest of the NFL for the last 4 weeks of the season.

Fast-forward 8 months and I begin my draft prep by examining last year's stats for all players and INVARIABLY I am stopped cold by at least one player....I read his year-end stat line and say:

"That can't be right....there's NO way he ended the year as top 15 WR, he SUCKED last year!"

In an effort to prove that I am correct about this player's suckage (and that I am not crazy), I grab the week-by-week stats only to find this player absolutely WENT OFF over the last 4-5 weeks of the prior NFL season (i.e. exactly when I had made my mind up about this guy and I was no longer paying attention).

This year, THAT player will be Steve Smith (Car) and here's why:

Newton has been coming on after a poor start, Smith has one of the lowest TD ratio of any top 30 WR (so there's plenty of upside), Smith has just posted two 100+ yard games over the last two weeks, and his last 3 games are against SD, Oak, and NO.

Nothing for you to do, just wanted to let you know that you won't be surprised next year, BECAUSE YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!

As always, just my opinion*

I actually heard it someplace else before this.
First brought to my attention roughly 3 weeks ago by Tristan Cockcroft at roughly the 45 minute mark of this Podcast: http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=8655659I actually did trade for Smith two days prior to hearing that and still can't bring myself to play him over AJ Green, Julio Jones & V-Jax. But I do believe he'll have another solid outing in San Diego this weekend.

Was so lucky to trade for Smith before the deadline. Two great weeks, and hopefully I'll win this week because the week 16 matchup against Oakland looks like its championship winning potential

It is still worth noting that Morton Muffley has touched on a valid point here (kudos); that many probably overlooked Smith as a potential playoff helper. He had match ups largely in his favor the final 4 weeks of the year, and if you listen to the Podcast I linked to earlier, Cockcroft had some interesting findings from past seasons, noting that match up based plays had the biggest impact at WR in the fantasy playoffs over all other positions. What's more is that the Steve Smith owner in most leagues was probably very unhappy with his early season performance, and willing to part with him for a song. I acquired him in a 3 player deal (Fitzpatrick / L Moore / Leshoure for Freeman / S. Smith / Andre Brown).

why not?
Yeah, it seems pretty obvious, but there's a part of me that thinks Steve Smith might be safer this week than Julio Jones. But it's also the superstitious part of me that buys into the Home / Away splits for Julio ... not exactly rational thinking I know.

I'm not so sure, he's getting pretty old and Newton is an eratic passer. They also need someone else to take a bit of heat off him. However, you might be able to get him pretty cheap so there could be value.

not buying. dude has 2 tds on the year and dont forget lafell has been out the past couple games. hes supposed to be back this week...

Wow, you must really be bored...Countless hours??

Having Smith might not make a lick of difference for me if I make it to the fantasy championship next week as I'll likely be facing the Newton owner.

I'm starting him this week, hope he blows up, he's due for it. Cam's been playing better of late, could be in for a huge game.
