Panthers confirm WR Steve Smith broke arm playing flag football. Will miss start of truing camp. More to come on espn.

Who was the Georgia running back who ended his career playing flag football after a great rookie year with the patriots? Robert Edwards?

You think these guys would learn to stay away from the charity/pick up football, too much risk, even if its non-tackle!

Schefter added: "Panthers WR Steve Smith underwent surgery last night. He could be ready for the Panthers regular-season opener."

I assume "could" is a deliberate word choice there.

That just doesn't sound right. For such a tough player to break his arm playing flag football is pretty bizarre. I hope he's back for the regular season opener.

Stupid injuries... :banned:

Robert Edwards tore up his knee during a beach football game that was a part of Pro Bowl week.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith broke his arm while playing defensive back during a flag football game at his football camp this weekend, his agent Derrick Fox confirmed.

Smith underwent surgery for the injury Sunday night. Fox predicted that Smith should be ready for the Panthers' regular-season opener.

"I'm not trying to play doctor, but I don't think he'll miss any games due to this injury," Fox said. "He did this while trying to play with and help the kids."

Smith ran his annual youth football camp Thursday through Saturday and the Panthers concluded their offseason practice last week.

Smith is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp in late July because of the injury but should be available later in the preseason.

Smith broke the same arm he did last season, albeit in a different spot. Last season, the injury caused him to miss the Panthers' regular-season finale.

Armanti Edwards may be running the wishbone at season's start because of this injury. :thanks:

Tough injury. Will be interesting to see where he goes in drafts if it is unsure when he'll be back.

The silver lining, is that assuming no complications, and aside from missing camp, when he comes back he should be full speed. It's not like anything happened to his wheels.

Given that he may be a good value on draft day.

ETA: Not that anyone cares about my team, but I was just negotiating where I trade him away... damn.

Maybe this is the year Dwayne Jarret breaks out. Does he step in as the true #2 during preseason?
Is this even possible? I picked him up in a dynasty on a whim but talk about anemic so far... does he have the skills? :blackdot: I can't blame Steve Smith for playing some TOUCH football, sounds just unlucky. Not like he's dirt bike racing or something.

He certainly has the size... maybe not so much on the skills side...

So he'll be fully healed by likely early to mid-august? Sounds like this may make him an even better value in redraft leagues.

About 10 weeks before the NFL gets under way. It would have been nice for Smoth to participate in camp to get on the same page with Moore, however they already wer playing pitch and catch pretty well during the end of last year. I would look at thsi as an opp to get one of the best WRs in the game for a cheaper price. Maybe he falls intot he 4th round now, maybe further.

Smith has had injuries in the past including some where he missed all of camp and he still was rolling along in the season. Not ideal for those that have drafted him but he makes an excellent WR2 in most leagues.

Normally I would agree with this but he broke the same arm that knocked him last year. Proceed with caution.

The guy to worry about here as well is Moore. He's got Clausen breathing down his neck and won't be able to work on timing with SS till right before the season or week 1. I think the kid has the skills to keep Clausen on the bench a year or two, but not if he's got no tools to work with. Clausen can learn to be a QB handing it off 50 times a game just as easily as MM can...

I think the injury is a non-issue. He will heal and play - and has had and will get plenty of time with Moore. The silver lining is a chance for the other WRs, particularly Burleson and the rook, to get quality practice time with Moore and without Smiff there to dominate the passing game. What CAR needs is for Moore and someone else to build enough connection that the other guy produces and spreads out the other team's heavy defensive focus on 8 in the box and virtually everyone else on SS. I kind of think this can turn out to be a good thing?

It won't be Burleson; he's in Detroit.

LaFell, Armanti Edwards, Jarrett would be the guys most likely to get an opportunity here...

There is no silver lining to the best player on the team re-breaking the same arm that knocked you out last year. I am a huge Panther fan and I have no clue who this Burleson dude is you are referring to.

WTF steve smith, you are making millions of dollars, wtf are you thinking?
What, you want him to sit on his butt all off-season? He's an athlete, he is going to do physical things when he's not on the field.
I do not expect him to be playing flag football in the offseason.
What do you expect him to do to keep in football shape? Pilates?
My guess is YMCA flag football doesn't keep a guy in NFL shape. Then again I play flag football and feel that the NFL should really take a harder look at my skills.

You realize that playing flag football breaks a clause in his contract right? You know this right?

How can you play fantasy football and not know who Burleson is? As someone pointed out, he's actually on DET and not CAR, but still....if Smith isnt healthy for at least a couple weeks before the start of the season, this is in no way good news for CAR. Lafell, Edwards, and Jarrett wouldve getting in reps regardless of this. Only good thing about it is for Smith's draft value, although breaking the same arm again in flag football makes me more than wary.

Who are you his friggin agent? Tell me what section and subsection this is pointed out in his contract.

Many people restrained themselves from comparing Armanti to Smith already in the limited time they've seen Edwards. It'll be interesting how this plays out.

Paragraph 3 of the standard player contract prohibits any football moonlighting: "Without prior written consent of the Club, Player will not play football or engage in activities related to football otherwise than for Club or engage in any activity other than football which may involve a significant risk of personal injury."

And you think that flag football involves "a significant risk of personal injury?"

You dont?

I know there is plenty of time before the season starts but as per the above, its the same arm broken again and this one is a red flag, at least for the short term. If he makes it back without further injury, it looks like he might start slow but will click into gear with Moore soon enough. Now if we are looking at a worst case scenario here, say Smith tries to hurry back and re-breaks his arm in Week 1 or pre-season and is put on IR, who is the biggest beneficiary in the WR corps or perhaps TE?

Firstly and most obviously it's clear that its a massive up tick for RB's Williams & Stewart as they would be leaned upon more heavily.

I'm thinking this does hurt Matt Moore somewhat having his only top quality WR out of action and as I just said the offense would end up being even more run heavy.

Now what about the WR's/TE's in a worst case scenario situation? In more shallow leagues it probably becomes a situation to avoid all together but there is always value to be mined in every situation so who can emerge out of a mess like this?

I know he has shown absolutely nothing at this level but the front office still does have something invested in Dwayne Jarrett so I think he would get every chance as the start especially being a veteran. My feel is that whoever emerges in camp out of the three rookies would get the shot opposite Jarrett. Wallace Wright and Kenneth Moore are not exciting options but they cannot be discounted either. It would be great to see Dexter Jackson emerge and live up to his 2008 draft slot but that's probably unlikely. At the very least these guys will be getting more meaningful reps to see how the situation plays out.

As for the TE's, I'd love to see someone like Dante Rosario break out but its an ugly 3 headed monster that unless we see someone break out from the pack, it's most likely there will be little value to be had.

Would like to hear some thoughts from others based on a worst case scenario for Smith.

FYI, here is a great post on the Panthers WR situation that does right to the bottom of the depth chart. Note that was posted a couple of hours before the Smith news broke.
