Had a monster week 1. Now I'm not trying to over react, but he finally has a qb who can feed his strength, the deep ball. Steve Smith still has tons of speed, and with their run based offense, there will be plenty of play actions where Newton tosses it 50 yards with the flick of a wrist and Smith has himself a long td. Obviously Newton being a sometimes inaccurate, and a rookie qb can hold steve back , but he also will give Smith a heavy dose of targets.

:lmao:

Fringe top 10. I would put him in the top 15-20 until we have seen some consistency from Newton. I love how the coaching staff is saying that every pass play will be designed with him as the "primary thought". Dude is still just as skilled as he has ever been, and may finally have someone who can deliver the ball to him and take full advantage of what he can do.

"Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski made it clear this week that Steve Smith is the passing game's "primary thought on every pass" attempted by Cam Newton.

Smith made the Cardinals pay for single coverage with 178 yards and two scores last week. He's certain to see more double teams going forward, but he's proven capable of beating that coverage in past. It's good to hear that Chud and Newton will continue to look his way regardless. Smith has monster upside if Newton can maintain a respectable passing attack. Sep 15 - 8:11 PM

No. I traded him and Owen Daniels for Maclin and Jason Whitten with the thinking he's not going to come up with 3/4 of that day the rest of the year. Prototypical sell high in my book. I hope I'm right.

Didn't he get called out of bounds on another long TD throw (~40 yards or so) - failed to get the other foot in?

All you bashing Smitty will be trying to trade for the guy in a few weeks. That's the real LOL!

Sure, I think it is very likely. The #10 WR in a given year gets roughly 1150 yards and 8 TDs. He already has 178 yards and 2 TDs, so as long as he can get 950 yards and 6 TDs over the next 15 games, he should be right about there.

This. Are people really "LOL" at the idea that Smitty gets 950 and 6 the rest of the year? As someone pointed out, he was one foot inbounds from going for 220 and 3 last week. D'Angelo and Cam will have field days running the ball if other teams double Smith every play.

With even a mediocre QB, Smith is an elite WR. Cam seems to be at least mediocre.

Not saying he can't possibly be top 10. But its been 6 years since he played a full season. And 3 years since he would have gotten 950/6 after taking out 1 game's worth of stats.

I voted no, but he'll be close and it wouldn't be a surprise if he does crack the top 10. I expect him to be in the 11-15 range.

Like many players, motivation is a factor with Smith. When watching his career he seems to play harder when he has something to prove or something to play for. He really hasn't had much to play for over the last few years. We all know he can ball, but it seems he has some extra motivation this year.

It's only been one game, but I think Panther Steve Smith will have a lot of opportunities (if Newton is QB) to have the stats to be a top 10 WR this year.

Wow! A TGunz post I agree with! :P

In December 2009 Matt Moore had a decent stretch of games and Smith played like a wr1 (4 games, 19 rec, 398 yards, 3 td). He was very studly with Delhomme. Newton has a much better arm than any of them. Roddy White was a top 10 wr in Ryan's rookie year, so it's not like this can't happen. Whenever Smith has an decent qb, he's great. The explosion is still there. And there's this: "Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski made it clear this week that Steve Smith is the passing game's "primary thought on every pass" attempted by Cam Newton". This is evidenced by week 1, and the 8 targets he got playing only a half in his lone preseason game. Cam definitely won't be throwing it 37 times a week, and Smith wont face single coverage by bad arizona cornerbacks weekly, but looking at his schedule, after Green Bay he doesn't face any teams with good secondaries except for the bears (new orleans is good but burnable, and the bears are burnable too.) Cam Newton is probably going to be innacurate alot, but with a high amount of targets Steve can still be :moneybag: . Plus the Panthers figure to run more, and that can leave D's susceptible to play action, which will be a strength because Cam is probably the first qb smith has had that can toss it 60 yards once smith has corners beat.

Can't believe people are dismissing Smitty so quickly. Yes, he has an excellent chance to finish in the top 10. The poor QB play is the only reason this guy hasn't stayed in the top 10 every year. He is as explosive as any WR in the league.

The talent is there, but in his prime, at the peak of his career he was inconsistant and injury plagued. Nothing leads me to believe that will change just yet, which is why I traded him for a beautiful haul.

I'm still thinking he'll wind up as a low end WR2 based on season totals. With a rookie QB, I think he'll be inconsistent as well; I can see wild weekly variance. Others in my 12 team redraft obviously feel the same, or worse, about him b/c I can't drum up much interest. I wish I could start him every week (start 2 WR, I have Calvin + MWTB) so I could at least benefit when/if he blows up any given game.

Curious to know what you got for him.

I was just about to say that. My thinking and reason for voting no, is because I think he will get hurt before he makes any sort of run for the top 10

I traded him and Owen Daniels for Jeremy Maclin and Jason Whitten. PPR league. My wr depth is good so I can sit on Maclin for a little while.
You got robbed.
Wow...and if that trade had happened before week 1, you would have said he had robbed the OTHER guy...Over-react much to 1 week? Maclin will be just fine, and is only 23 or 24 years old. I make that trade all day long.

Traded smith for some depth at qb and wr. I got stafford and Ingram in return. I'm starting stafford against a miserable looking kc D this week. I have DMC, Blount, Tolbert, caddy Williams, and Daniel thomas as RBs and My receivers are Fitz and mike Wallace, so I wasn't seeing any room for smith to play unless he kept up with his week 1 performance.. Went and got jacoby jones and doucet for some WR backup... Thoughts on all of this??

since Smitty was a big part of the trade, I'll share the one I made yesterday in a PPR dynasty

I gave: Brees, Gore, Smitty

I got: Vick, Fitz, Colston

Obviously the 422 passing yards won't be repeated on a weekly basis. However, l think we learned that Cam Newton can play. That is going to translate into a very good year for Steve Smith.

OK I am ready to believe now...needed to see it 2 weeks in a row vs a top notch DF.

Too bad it does me little good right now since the drafts are over unless we can go back into a time machine and re-draft.

I was impressed with Smith and really the entire Carolina O today. Sure Cam made some mistakes, but they put up a ton of offense against a VERY good defense, and on the road to boot. Obviously we have to temper expectations somewhat because Cam isn't going to throw for 400 yards every week, but a healthy Smith could easily be a top 10-15 WR when all is said and done.

1. Green Bay's defense has given up a ton of yards 2 weeks in a row2. Carolina wasn't playing on the road today

Regardless, Smith looked explosive today and for the 2nd week saw a ton of targets. No idea if he will finish top-10, but the dude sure is dangerous right now.

Smith looks quick and goes up and gets the ball for a small guy. If Cam can keep this up,I expect big things for him.

Enjoying him as my flex receiver behind Calvin and Vincent Jackson.

Can I change my "no" vote? All I know is that in my start 2 WR league, MWTB goes to my bench & Smiff is in my lineup next week.

Voted "Yes" last Wednesday, and through 2 weeks, he certainly looks the part. :)

WR3 on my one team I have him...looking good! :D
