Steve Smith (1 Viewer)

(KFFL) Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith has not come out and said it but clearly he wants to be traded. According to a source close to the situation, Smith's preference is to play for either the San Diego Chargers or Baltimore Ravens.

(KFFL) Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith reportedly cleaned out his locker in March before the lockout started. He also took down all of his decorations in the luxury suite that his family used on game days. This could be a sign that he wants to be traded as soon as a new collective bargaining agreement is reached. Smith apparently asked to be traded before the lockout began. The Panthers have kept the issue very quiet but told Smith in January that if he wants to be traded that the team would accommodate it. However, the team told him they won't just release him or "give him away."

I realize this is anything but a done deal, but it gets me gitty thinking what he could do with Phillip Rivers or Joe Flacco. I was listening to the audible a few weeks ago and they were also talking about the potential of this happening. Smith's value is nothing right now and if traded I think he could blow up this year(Owens last year fashion).IMO prob worth grabbing for a late first (or even less) if your looking for a guy with a high ceiling. Some think he is done but he is only 31 and he seems like a guy who was affected by the supporting cast rather than falling off the age cliff. Either way IMO worth a flyer and is a great buy low.Get him before he gets traded folks! ;)

He has also been linked to trade "rumours" surrounding New England.

I am hoping Carolina has acknowledged that they need to get something in return for Steve Smith while they are about to go into their rebuilding years.

I'm thinking I like him landing in a place like NE or SD or even CHI. Going to BAL is so-so to me, since Boldin is there and even Rice is very involved catching passes. Obviously BAL is much better for Smith's FF value than CAR though.

I hope that SD, Balt or NE pay a hefty price for his services. He is 31 almost 32.

While admittedly short term it could be a difference maker (the difference maker?).

Smith might be 31, but he's taken VERY few hits and had very little injuries during his career. A few freak bone breaks, but nothing major. I think IF he wants to, he could play until mid to later 30s at a high level.

He'd be good in SD. Of course SD really doesn't need to trade for WRs.

Anyway, this should just be another reminder to Carolina that picking Newton at #1 is a Bad Idea.

Isn't he on pace to break the ironman streak midway through the 2014 season?

BTW, major news outlets were late on this one...

This is the first season in memory where Steve Smith has completely cleaned out his locker at the end of the season. In seasons past he has always left some belongings behind during the off season... This could be nothing or it could be a sign of things to come. I expect SS will be with another team for 2011. That may not be any better for his stats but certainly couldn't be worse. SS has a better outlook if he leaves.. IMO

I read this months ago.

The problem is that his value is in the trash right now, but if he gets traded it will likely be TOO high to make a reasonable and calculated offer. I like WRs like smith with a good history of doing things after the catch. But he did not look good very often last year at all. i have him in a 20 team dynasty, but he may not make my list of 10 keepers.

Did you happen to notice who was throwing him the ball last year?

if steve goes to a team with an actual qb, it will be the first time in his career that he has had one.

i mean come on jake delhomme?

i think would be a great #1B or #2 wr on a good team now, and in ppr could catch a lot of passes, ala welker.

A little more information seems to confirm that the Panthers will try and accommodate Smith in a trade, taken from Rotoworld:

ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas reports Steve Smith was told in January that the Panthers would "work with him" on a trade if he wants out.

Smith was asked to mull over his future in Carolina and get back to the team's brass. It was made clear that the Panthers will not release Smith or "give him away." The Gaston Gazette's Steve Reed confirms that Smith "does want out," and that his preference is to play for the Chargers or Ravens. If Smith does end up playing with a top-tier QB, he's a good bet to re-join the ranks of the fantasy elite. Any time he's had even an adequate passer, Smith has been one of the most unstoppable receivers in the game.

If the lockout doesn't get reinstated, VJ is GONE

And behind him they don't have much
This is potentially true. Consider:Jackson - UFA, likely gone

Floyd - UFA, may be gone

Naanee - free agent, not sure if UFA or RFA, may be gone

Davis - one more year on his contract, but has been a bust and could be released

Those were the top 4 WRs in the Chargers' passing offense entering last season, and they could all be gone... so there could be a big opportunity for someone in a great passing offense with Rivers.

It may be that there is not much of a market for Floyd at 30 and with an injury history or Naanee with no real track record, so perhaps that makes it more likely they could be back.

Ajirotutu and Crayton emerged and played well with the opportunities they were given, which might encourage the Chargers to let Naanee and Davis go. I suspect they will resign Floyd. Would the Chargers would be content with Gates, Floyd, Ajirotutu, and Crayton as their primary receiving corps? And if not, what would they do about it?

It's been reported that he's already gone, they just haven't been able to officially cut him yet
Davis - one more year on his contract, but has been a bust and could be released
it will be a miracle if they don't cut him before the season starts
And if not, what would they do about it?
draft one in round 2 or later (they've already said as much)what they won't do is invest a lot of money in it, they just don't value it enough.which is why I have doubts that they would be willing to bring in SS on his current contract

The Chargers really screwed up so bad that their top receiver might be Crayton? LOL Go AJ Smith!
If I had to guess how it ends up right now, I'd say:WR1 - FloydWR2 - AjirotutuWR3 - CraytonThat's not that bad, the problem is depth. If Floyd gets hurt, which seems to happen every season, they have a problem.

Always a big fan of his, but I wonder at 31 when that elite, ankle-breaking quickness will start to fade. And at his size he can't offer much more than that.
