Steven Jackson's ESPN column: Start Me! (1 Viewer)

Now. That's the answer to some of you readers who have been asking me when you're going to get some useful insight into my status in this column. Are you ready? Sitting down? Because I have some news for everyone:

I'm back. Start me this Sunday.

Knowing this got me thinking of a quote I once heard by a British writer named John Galsworthy (Oregon State education, baby!): "A man of action forced into a state of thought is unhappy until he can get out of it." That's deep, right? Well, it also pretty much sums me up over the past several weeks. I am a running back. That is what I love to do, and it was absolutely killing me to just sit there and watch my Rams play without me. But I'm feeling great, and as long as there are no setbacks this week, I'm going to be on the field against the Browns.

Every single one of you who cheered me on and told me to get healthy in the comments section of this column gets a pat on the back from me this week. I really do appreciate all the unselfishness and support you all offered while I was sidelined. In fact, I'll have a lot of you in the back of my mind on the field this week. Not just from a fantasy point of view, but from a fan's point of view.

Regardless of my status, though, we need to pick up a W in the worst way this week. Marc Bulger is back, I am back and there are no excuses for continuing this winless streak. Look, I'm not oblivious; I read the newspapers and the columns, and I saw that people were expecting me to be out until Week 10 so I could heal over the bye week, since this was a "lost season." But, believe me, it's not. We've got nine games left to play, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't going to try, with every ounce of willpower I have, to get us nine wins.

Underneath it all? The fact that I love to play this game. Win or lose, there's nothing better than getting onto that field and just running around and living out a childhood dream. Standing on the sidelines was interesting, don't get me wrong. I got to watch Brian Leonard and a group of guys I consider to be the most talented in the league play this game at its highest level, but I was ready to be back on that field the minute I was forced off.

Luckily, I've been treated by the best medical staff in football, and I'm ready to return and start helping this team. And yours. Hopefully, all my managers out there in fantasy land held on to me (or made shrewd trades to get me) and will ride me to their fantasy championship. I realize I have a lot of running to do to get your teams back to where they need to be.

ESPNers, I can't thank you enough for your continued support. That's why you're the first to know, directly from my lips, that you'll be seeing me suit up against Cleveland this week. I'm back!

So I'll see you all Sunday against the Browns. It feels good to be writing that again. Best of luck to all of you and your fantasy teams, and I hope you all reap the fruits of my return to the field.

This guy is such a class act, I am so happy to have him in dynasty. It's all about that Pac 10 education...LHucks knows what I'm talking about.

It sounds great, but... should he be relied upon in his first week back? I have to decide between Jackson and Benson this week (CHI is vs. DET), and I'm leaning towards Cedric. Am I crazy?

This guys singlehandedly ruined my fantasy seasons. At least he seems like a nice guy, although that does nothing to help me.

What's Benson done for you this year to even make that a choice?

Trying to decide between Sjax, who has a JUICY matchup with CLE, or KJ who plays at 'da Bears. I spent almost half my cap on SJax and I'd cry like Jimmy Swaggert if he goes off on my bench. Still, hard to sit KJ right now.

as great of a match-up as cleveland is, i think i need to see what he can do first. he's not just returning from an injury...we also need to be very cognizant of the condition of the o-line...and i'm just not feeling like they're going to contribute much.

How many running backs said they were going to rush for 1500 yards in the preseason?

Jackson appears to be a likeable kid but there's a big difference between talking and doing. Was he not trying in his first three games?

I might take the bait or drink the juice and start him over Portis ;)

In which case I start LT and SJ, the concensus #1 and #2 overall picks. Someone dropped Jackson for fear of a lost season.

I might take a risk and start him. My RB2 slot hasn't broke any significant points in the last few weeks. Sjax and ADP will be a good combo for down the stretch.

Looking forward to SJAX making a come back. Just traded for LJ, and would like to see what those two can do on the same squad.

Is that even real?? Help me understand this...
If you've heard the man speak, you know his articles are probably translated by a team at ESPN. Nevertheless, good news!

Here's where that quote is coming from...

As a Jackson (and Leonard) owner, I am happy to hear he's feeling better, but cautious about his coming back right before the bye week. It seems like it would be great if he could wait another two weeks to be on the safe side against re-aggravating the injury.

Reading this quote didn't help either.

"The groin is something, it feels good one day and the next day you may have a little tweak to it," Jackson said. "As long as things are going good I want to stay out there."

Just looking at it from a general long-view standpoint, players produce just as much when they're injured but playing as they do when they're fully healthy. I believe it was Construx who did a study comparing a player's scoring average in games where he was listed as questionable but still played to his scoring average in games where he didn't appear on the injury report and found that players actually scored a hair MORE when questionable. If S-Jax really is cleared to play this week, I have no problems starting him.

Too bad the blockers are letting defenders meet SJax 5 yards deep in the backfield. They keep losing O linemen.

I don't even know what to say other than I don't even know what to say.
