eh....

die hard 49er fan here and i'll have to wait till hell freezes over to justify alex "i got a boo boo, coach" smith justify his spot!!!!

what type of individual numbers would justify it? I guess being a big part of a 9-1 D just doesnt cut it.
I don't understand this comment. Everyone on the Packer D should have been taken top 5 since they are a part of a team that is 9-1? I guess that makes everyone on the Patriots a player who should have been drafted #1 cause they are a part of a 10-0 team. Please explain why a guy on a 9-1 team is automatically a justified high pick than a guy on a team that stinks.

Im saying what do you want from the guy? He is doing his part to make the D very strong. Would you be happier if he put up great numbers and the D cant keep the team in the game?

He's alright. Solid. Pretty good.

I'd agree he hasn't justified the hype as yet, but he's young and isn't a weakness so I'm sure the Packers will take that... at least for the time being.

A.J. Hawk just happens to have a cool sounding football name. That in itself makes him look better than he really is.

If there were a linebacker named J.T. Steel you can bet scouts and NFL teams would be all over his nutz too.

Hawk went 5th overall. Ernie Sims went 9th overall. Both play the same position. They are the only 2 LBs drafted in the top-10 since Lavar Arrington in 2000. So, it seems like a perfectly good comparison.

Here are their career stats so far:

Hawk: 26 games, 134 solos, 52 assists, 3.5 sacks, 10 passes defensed, 3 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles

Sims: 26 games, 148 solos, 68 assists, 1.5 sacks, 2 passes defensed, 1 interception, 2 forced fumbles

Sims with the edge in raw tackles, while Hawk has a pretty significant edge in big plays with more sacks, more interceptions, and more passes defensed.

there are plenty of players who don't live up to their draft position every year at every position. Hawk may not be a superstar yet, but it's still just his 2nd year and he's performing pretty well so there's no reason to think he won't develop into one of the league's best OLBs.

Not to mention the porn industry...

Hawk has given the Packers solid play from day one. He will help anchor the D for the next 10 years or so. He is a steady force on the defense, just because he is not gettting a sack or turnover a game does not mean he is living up to his draft spot. The defense is not made for him to make all kinds of big plays just make the every day plays. This is the Bates defense with a few chances under Sanders, Zach Thomas was the only real linebacker you ever heard of when Bates ran his scheme in Miami.

Hawk is surely doing better than the other guy people wanted the Pack to take one Vernon " I workout great in my underwear" Davis.

NFC North trivia:

In the 2006 draft, the Packers selected Hawk with their first pick and both the Vikings and Lions also selected linebackers a few picks later (Greenway and Sims).

In the 2003 draft, the Packers selected Barnett with their first pick and both the Vikings and Lions also selected linebackers a few picks later (EJ Henderson and Boss Baily).

All six are now starters. I'd say Mike Sherman made a good choice in 2003 taking Barnett over the more-heralded Henderson and Baily. As for Hawk, I think the jury is still out. Most everyone expected Sims to be very good, but Hawk was considered the safer pick in my opinion and I think that expectation has proven to be accurate. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight after 1.5+ seasons, I'm not sure who if anyone I would want rather than Hawk.

 Seriously, I really fail to see why this thread was created? LHUCKS, care to comment? It just doesn't make sense?

Wonder why he didnt start this same thread for the top 3 guys from that draft. None have really justified their draft position either.

let's see:5.54 solo tackles/game2 assists per game.13 sacks per game.384 passes defensed/game.12 picks/game.08 fumbles forced/gamemultiply that out per season...88.64 solo tackles/year32 assists/year2.08 sacks/year6.14 pass defences/year1.92 picks/year1.28 fumbles forced/yearmultiply that out for a 12 year career...1,064 tackles384 assists24 sacks72 passes defensed32 interceptions16 fumbles forcedlet's compae to hall of fame outside linebackers...Harry Carson, OLB, New York Giants from 1976-1988:8 sacks from 1982-198822 ints his entire career14 fumbles recoveredand those are the only stats I can find on this guy...but Hawk is on pace for more sacks & picks in his career....how about some current players (I think we'll get complete stats since these stats domn't seem to exist until after 2000):Derrick Brooks:592 solo tackles, 194 assists in 7 seasons (84.57, 27.71)13.5 sacks on his career (13 seasons)34 passes defensed in 7 seasons (just under 5 a season)24 picks in 12 seasons (2/season)Ray Lewis:518 solo, 201 assts in 6 years (not including 2004) (86.33, 33.5)28 sacks in 11 seasons (2.55)25 picks in 11 seasons (2.27)30 passes defensed in 6 seasons (5)So, to sum up... if Hawk continues at the pace he is currently at:he will have much better stats than current hall of famer (class of '06) Harry Carsonhe will have better stats in every category than Derrick Brooks...he will have more tackles, fewer sacks, fewer picks, and more passes defensd than Ray Lewis...So... again... how exactly is he not living up to his #5 pick if the greatest LB of our generation (Lewis) isn't head and shoulders better than him statistically? Heck, how can you say he isn't a superstar? I mean, what kind of argument are we making here exactgly, because it obviously is not a statistical one...

Would you rather they have taken Steve Emtman??? The Pac-10 puts out high-quality defenders every year.

Shocking that he isn't here to defend his initial comment.Tool to the nth degree.
Thread title needs to be edited to read "Still Waiting for LHUCKS to Justify His FBG Member #"Having been here since 2003 you would expect a more compelling argument from LHUCKS and not just the Big 10 sucks and is overhyped.

LHUCKS also chooses to bump the thread after what everyone knew would be a bad match-up for Hawk. It was even in the weak plays article this week. The lions passed 40 times and came out in 3-4 wide the majority of that time forcing the packers to go to the dime package with one LB(Barnett).

From watching the games Hawk has had a solid year. He is always around the ball but with the improvement in the overall tackling of the entire defense his chances have decreased. Also the offense is greatly improved over last year and is one of the best in the league in time of possession this year and that has also led to decreased opportunities along with the fact that the Packers have played with the lead the majority of this year effecting the opposing teams play calling with them having to pass more.
