Strangest Championship Team last year? (1 Viewer)

Was having a conversation with a co-owner just now. We had a good talk about our championship last year. We drafted Calvin and Andre Johnson at the first/second turn. Grabbed a ton of RBs late we were high on. We were stoked to grab Romo/Stafford/Gronkowski fairly late.

We grabbed Cam Newton after week one (10 team league and we had #1 waiver after drafting 10th). After a few weeks, we traded Denarious Moore for Sproles. Several weeks later, we traded Stafford for Chris Johnson (who we barely played after a few weeks). At some point we acquired CJ Spiller. After waiting on RBs, we ended up chasing startable RBs all year long.

We started 2-4 but won our next 7 games, earning a bye. We won the championship and the points total running away. I think we started Cam, Sproles, Khalil Bell, CJ Spiller, Calvin Johnson, Laurent Robinson, and Gronk in week 16. Sadly we sat DeAngelo Williams and his two touchdowns but won anyway.

At the end of the year, we won with the following roster:

Cam Newton

Tony Romo

Darren Sproles

Jackie Battle

CJ Spiller (big help in playoffs)

Kahlil Bell

DeAngelo Williams

Daniel Thomas

Chris Johnson (who we benched both playoff games)

Calvin Johnson

Laurent Robinson

Andre Johnson (who hardly played)

Rob Gronkowski

That roster is mostly ####e. Our runningback production was pitiful all year long. But it's crazy how a couple amazing seasons from players like Calvin Johnson, Gronkowski, and Cam totally carried us to a championship. And not a fluke playoff run since we outscored the rest of the league by about 15%.

What are some crazy rosters that won it all for you last year?

PS. By the way, co-owning a team is totally awesome. I only do it in this league, but it makes FF conversations so much better. Generally, in FF nobody cares about your team and you don't want to say too much about your favorite players. Co-owning a team allows you to have open conversations about everyone and really enjoy your success with a friend.

I had a similar team last year and won the championship and set the record for total points in my league.

I drafted Calvin and Fitz 1,2. Then drafted Felix, Greene, and Beanie as my RB's. Got Stafford and Gronk later. Also drafted Murray and Michael Bush late. My starting lineup in the championship game

was:

Stafford

Calvin

Fitz

Greene

M. Bush

Gronk

K

D

The weird thing was that my RB's that I drafted early really stunk and it was Murray and Bush that really put my team over the top.

I think every year I play, at least half of the league champs have "odd" team makeups.

The production of Calvin, Brees, and Gronk was so far and away advantageous that I saw SEVERAL championship teams last year that had 2 of the 3 on their teams. In one league, I was the Brees guy going against the Calvin, Newton, and Gronk guy. He had NO runing game while I had a great running game. But I couldn't overcome those 3.

The year before that, I saw A LOT of Vick/Fitz/Foster combos on winning teams. Even in leagues with very good scoring systemes that balance things out, a dominant player carries a lot of weight. Its not as bad as the good old days when you drafted marshall Faulk, Shaun Alexander, Priest Holmes, or one of those types and said "Ok fellas, see 5 of you in the playoffs." but its still quite an advantage. I don't see it being that unusual at all.

I had never thought about co-owning a team. I actually had the opposite take, like "What kind of guys feel the need to split a $50 entry fee?" but I see your point now. It would be kinda nice to have someone who enjoyed talking about your success or failure as much as you did. After all, the dog and the GF/wife usually don't have the same type of emotional investment in it.

Andre Johnson killed me last year. I had Megatron and Gronkowski, plus Eli Manning. So I had a really solid base. My RBs stunk (Mark Ingram, Felix Jones, CJ Spiller was good late), but if Andre Johnson had stayed healthy I think I would've won pretty easily with Eli/Megatron/AJ/Gronk.

As it was, I made the playoffs and was bounced in the first round.

Yeah. Few years ago, best buddy asked me to help him in a league because he'd never done a redraft before. It's the cheapest league I'm in, and I don't know most of the other owners very well. But the buddy system makes the league so much fun. We talk weekly about waiver wire pick ups, matchups, lineups, trades offers, what we need to win, etc. There's been a buddy team in the big money contract auction league I'm in that's been around nearly 20 years. I always thought it was strange. But now I get it.

I'm not sure how you call a team with a top 5 qb, top 1 TE, and top 1 wr ####e. That's a good squad.
Well yeah, we weren't terrible--we outscored the league. But we started 2-4 when Andre Johnson went down. Things looked bleak. We were scraping by much of the year, trying to find TWO running backs to play, eventually trading for Chris Johnson (Oops). And we searched for a #2 receiver much of the season. That's three starters we were constantly trying to find. Once we started winning, we thought for sure the wheels would come off at some point. It felt very by-the-seat-of-our-pants.

Championship Squad (not me) from my 4 WR/TE, PPR money league drafted and started in Week 1:

Matt Ryan

Jamaal Charles (OUCH)

Fred Jackson (OUCH)

Wes Welker

Roddy White

J. Finley

B. Celek

with Steven Jackson on bench

Ended year with:

Ryan

S. Jax

M. Morris

Welker

White

A. Brown

D. Williams

Whereas I drafted Gronk in the 7th and got Newton off the waiver wire and went out in Week 15.

12 team non PPR I drafted big Ben in the 6th Stafford in the 7th and spent Half of my free agent budget to pick Cam up after wk #1 everyone in the league thought I was nuts! They said Cam wk #1 was a fluke and why would I carry 3 QB !

2 wks later traded stafford for Ryan Matthews and Fitzgerald at trade deadline traded Big Ben got Jimmy Graham

Final starting lineup:

Cam

Rice

Matthews

Wallace

Fitz

Antonio brown

Graham ( Hernandez on bench)

Lions defense

I won the league scoring title 1st place entire season most pts in the playoffs!!
