Strategy: Playing a backup.... (1 Viewer)

This is not a WDIS. I'm simply looking for Shark feedback on a strategy that is much more easily explained by using the actual players and rosters in question:

My opponent this weekend (my brother!) has a more explosive roster than mine. In addition to SJax and Gore, he's got Palmer vs. Indy as well as D. Stallworth vs. NYG. I''d normally start Bulger this weekend vs. OAK, but I could go with Garcia instead to cancel out his Stallworth production. I'm also starting Housh (over Coles), who could also minimize Palmer's impact on our game as well.

What do you think of this reasoning (if it even could be charactorized as reasoning!). I think if Bulger was a CLEARLY better play than Garcia, then this strategy probably wouldn't make alot of sense. However, I think they're pretty close this weekend. Also, if our teams were more evenly matched this might not make as much sense either. However, I'm feeling if I can minimize his impact players somewhat, I might be able to make up ground elsewhere.

Comments?

Yeah, what the first two guys said.

I can see starting Housh anyway and you can probably argue the merits of Bulger vs Garcia considering the match ups, but I say "dance with who brung ya!" Good luck with it.

Seems to be unanimous. Anyone else with a different take on this?
Yes.The goal is not to score the most points, it's to win. There are rare situations where you can maximize your chances to win by playing a player who you would ordinarily project to score fewer points, because you're mitigating risk in other areas. However, these situations are fairly rare and in your specific case I doubt that cancelling out the production of a third-tier WR is a good enough reason to even be thinking about this.So if you'd ordinarily go with Bulger, I'd stick with him here.

I've tried this strategy a few times when I feel my team is a lot better than my opponent, but he has one top-tier QB/WR who could put up big points and start the WR/QB to try to minimize that impact.

100% of the time that I have tried it, it has misfired badly and has cost me a couple of games that I should have won. I'd strongly recommend going with who you feel is the best player.

That said, Oakland's D is pretty tough against the pass, and Bulger has been struggling, so I'd probably go with Garcia anyway. Not to mention, Stallworth is the least of your problems with the lineup that you are facing!
