Yeah, .095 string is the way to go. Light enough that it gives a clean cut
and thick enough so your not feeding it out every 30 seconds.

2nd summer with the Hitachi cordess. I do notice the battery doesn't last quite as long these days. I now get about 30-35 minutes with it instead of the 35-40 I used to get. Not a huge deal, and I also use that battery fairly regularly with my impact, drill, and cordless saws, so that's wearing it down too.

Luckily, 3.0 amp/hour Hitachi batteries were on sale last week for $59 for two of them (bought four of them). If the battery really is starting to wear down, then at worst, those 4 batteries would get me 8 more summers. $15/year is plenty worth it for me not to have to fool with gas or cords. If the batteries hold up longer, then I just have plenty of back-up batteries for the other Hitachi cordless tools.

Going with this unless someone strenuously objects.
Good choice. I have a Ryobi and if I had to do it over again I'd buy an Echo.

FYI...For those who have gas powered trimmers that stopped running (or start but then stop quickly) don't add it to the scrap heap before trying to replace the carburetor. The vast majority of start issues are carburetor related (i.e. > 90%) and it's worth a $10 investment to see if that's the issue. I replaced mine recently and it now runs almost like new. Also changed the spool head to an Oregon Gator Speedload and now very pleased.

Again...if you get a good trimmer (i.e. Echo) you shouldn't need to be replacing carburetors and spool heads but if you're already down that path it might make more sense to replace trouble parts than throwing away.

I just bought the EGO 56v trimmer (on sale for $159.99)    I bought the EGO mower last year for home (1/2 acre lot) so the kids wouldn't have to worry about hard start.  Battery charges full in less than 30 mins, they've never used up the battery mowing the lawn.   Sounds like a floor fan, cuts/bags very well, even with some leaf coverage.  It blew me away with how awesome it was.

I had an older black and decker trimmer, and the batteries were starting to get old, and I went through 3 batteries for each time on the lawn trimming duties.  I, like Shuke, like a crisp edge, and I was using an entire battery and a half just for sidewalk.  I'm hoping this new trimmer will mean one and done on battery, and the 30 min charge time means if I HAVE to go to 2 batteries/use I'll still be done in 30 mins.  The old batteries took forever to charge too.

I'll try to remember to post results.

How long on average do you need to run this thing at one time?  I've got a battery powered B&D hedge trimmer that runs forever and I love it.  I've heard good things about their trimmer as well, but I think if I had to go more than 20-30 minutes with it, I'd be skeptical.  It runs a bout $150 though.

Same here.  We love it.  I have 3 batteries and 2 chargers (they charge pretty fast).  Works great and love not have the cord.

All of my yard tools are electric except my mower (16 yr. old Honda going strong ...and electric start).  Have a B&D trimmer, weed whacker/edger, pole trimmer, and blower/vac.  I have a big, corded blower vac as well (only use it when the leaves are heavy).  Go with the 40v whenever possible.
