Strong Finishers and Guys who faded away in '06? (1 Viewer)

Who are the guys who stick in your mind as being strong finishers last year. Guys who under produced or came out of obscurity to finish strong. Guys you might think will carry over to next year...not one game wonders.

Guys who faded, guys who started strong or above average but went in the tank at the end of the year. Not because of major injury but perhaps because of declining skills or desire that might transfer over to 2007.

Andre Johnson's first 8 games in 2006: 65 catches, 752 yards, 4 touchdowns, 99 FP's, 12.38 PPG

Andre Johnson's next 8 games in 2006: 38 catches, 395 yards, 1 touchdown 45 FP's 5.63 PPG

From the the first half of the season to the second half Andre Johnson went from stud to dud. And for the life of me I can't figure out why. He supposedly had a deep thigh bruise but he played in every game. Other than that I just don't know.

Which half is the real Andre Johnson? Is it a combination of both?

QB:VY/Romo were the big ones. Their numbers were better than Bulger's down the stretch. Campbell was a top 15 QB down the stretch. Losman/Garrard/Leinart had minor improvements.RB: Bush/MJD/DeAngelo Williams/Benson/Deuce stands out. MJD was the #2 RB in the 2nd half.WR: Curry/Matt Jones/HolmesTE: Scheffler/Vernon Davis

Lee Evans first 8 games: 39 recs, 487 yds 2 tds, 60 FP's 7.5 PPG

Lee Evans next 8 games: 43 recs, 805 yds 6tds, 108 FP's 16 PPG

It seemed that once JP Losman started to "get it" at the quarterback position Lee Evans benefitted greatly. If JP Losman can continue to improve and look to Lee Evans early and often there's potential for Evans to have a huge season in 2007.

First 8 games: 120 carries, 561 yards, 4.7 YPC, 3 TDs

Last 8 games: 146 carries, 498 yards, 3.4 YPC, 2 TDs

Game by game, his last 8 YPC were: 2.5, 2.2, 3.1, 7.3, 3.7, 3.6, 2.3, 3.2. He had one secind half game over 4 YPC, and in the other 7 his YPC was 3.0.

Huge red flag for me.

IMO it was Kubiak's lack of faith in David Carr. I read somewhere in an ESPN magazine article on Carr that the coaching staff believed he cost Johnson over 500 yards last season (I apologize for not being more specific). Carr was benched in the game at Tennessee, and Kubiak really seemed to lose confidence in him as the season wore on. Had Rosenfels not been injured it is my belief that Carr would have been benched the last month of the season. The play-calling seemed to get more and more conservative and the emphasis on the running game increased. Dayne benefitted the most with some big games down the stretch, and the defense played better as well. This is just a homer opinion but I did watch all the games. It really seemed like Kubiak did not trust Carr at all in December but was forced to play him because the only other options were Bradlee Van Pelt or Quinton Porter. IMO, AJ's lack of production was simply a side effect of Carr's career in Houston ending with a resounding thud.

While little weight generally carries over on defenses from year to year as the vary so much, people still seem to be forgetting a big fade there.

Chicago defense's fantasy points by week counting the playoffs:

19, 16, 9, 16, 17, 17, 16, 7, 15, 16, 11, 27, 5, 5, 5, 8, 5, 12, 6

Edge sticks out in my mind.

1st 8 games: 185/516/2.8/3/zero 100 yd games

2nd 8 games: 152/643/4.2/3/three 100 yd games

65 rec in 8 games is awesome, best season ever type pace. Not fair to expect that in the 2nd half IMO. If ya knock it to 50(still a fairly high #) and take into account he barely played week 17, it really isn't that bad. Lil more than 5 rec per game

I like your list, but Losman was the #28 Qb for the season, #13 over the last 6 weeks, #6 for the last 3. That's MAJOR improvement. Granted, the D's may have been weaker.

Who says that I was expecting him to maintain that first half pace? Should I have expected his numbers to plummet as they did later in the season? His production dropped by over 50% in the second half of the season. He averaged 5 points a game. That's terrible anyway you look at it. I'm sorry but I'm not buying the law of averages excuse. As Houston turmOiler pointed out the coaches couldn't trust David Carr and with good reason. David Carr may have been the worst quarterback in the league in the final 10 games last season. Do you want to know how many TD passes he threw in that span? Two touchdowns in 10 games.

David Carr's gone now and in comes Matt Schaub. Looking at what AJ was able to accomplish with Carr if Schaub is worth half the hype he's gotten Andre Johnson could be a top 5 receiver this season. I wouldn't count on it.

Does playing hurt change your perspective on someone?

Older players who always get hurt have even more red flags.

Opposing teams figured out that Eric Moulds and Owen Daniels were not worth covering? AJ didnt see less than a double team the last half of the season.
