Submitting Backups for your Starters (1 Viewer)

there is always the other side of the coin in having a backup.

Say the backup player has a great game, and your starter is in just long enough that he is considered an active player. Had you just played the backup player you would do better.

I still think this is a good rule for late games when many of your backup players probably have played. I am looking at Marvin Harrison at the moment, but he is playing at 4 pm, and the player I would replace him with is playing at 1 pm. Doubt I can wait to see if he plays or not.

Sounds like coddling. Typical in today's world. No wonder the Chinese are burying us.
Yeah. Winning every week because of luck when my opponent loses a late game player to an injury during warm-ups is just the way I like to win.

Please note: This has nothing to do with people "doing their homework" - it has to do with the games starting at different times. Incidentally, it also would prevent the "mandatory" vigil from 12:30 ET until kickoff just to make sure none of your guys got hurt during wrm ups. When poeple have things like church, their kid's games (my son has a football game this week at 12:00 ET - i'm never going to make it back by early kickoffs) and other things of that nature, it seems silly to "punish" them for being unable to sitdown in front of their computer a half hour before kickoff to make sure none of their players was hurt in warmups, got sick, etc. This is similar to the reason I won't play in a league that has "instant" WW pickups - that is, I don't want to get screwed out of a player becuase I happened to be at work, coaching my son's games, etc., when FBG's emailed that so-and-so got hurt at practice and won't start. Basically, it rewards people that have no life or just happened to be near a computer when the news broke.
 Let's face it, there are many of us whose lives have been unwisely consumed by fantasy football. The argument that having a backups system just takes away some of the "difficult decisions" from the game doesn't fly with me. What it does is take away a LITTLE bit of the random error and luck away from the game.

To each his own. It evens itself out of the course of a season. I love this rule today, since I'm a Travis Henry owner. I can plug Henry in, and if he doesn't play that's fine, I just get whoever I have backing him up stats.

Or like this week when Jamal Lewis gets banged up on the first play. :bag: Would love to be able to sub in a guy if he doesn't return for the second half.

In one of my leagues, we're allowed to submit bench players as "back-ups". Their scores count only if our listed starter doesn't play.

Basically how this works is that if your starter Matt Schaub suffers a freak injury during warmups, you wouldn't get a zero for the game, but would get Garrard's numbers instead. The same goes for every other player. If Travis Henry (or anyone else on your team) is a game time decision, then you don't have to sweat too bad over the thought of getting a zero. Just submit your backup and rest easy.
Any Santonio Holmes owners out there? This sort of thing is the very reason why I'm glad we do this.

We allow people to post on the message board who the backup player would be in the event of a DNP for the starter. Once posted it cannot be substituted. We call it the McNair rule.

I think this entire argument boils down to two categories:

1. Those who are hardcore FF players and will spend every sunday watching the computer before the games so they make the right call. These guys typically will end up on top or near the top by the end of the year anyways and don't want to give up any of their well earned advantages.

2. Those who have a life and play for fun, and don't want to be a prisoner of the computer or any Bill Bellicheck shenanigans every Sunday of the damn football season.

Count me solidly in group 2.

These guys typically will end up on top or near the top in the middle of the pack by the end of the year anyways and don't want to give up any of their well earned advantages becuase they lost to some of the "guppies" who don't realize your "supposed" to draft RB's early and the "guppies" got stuck with Lamont Jordan as their RB2 and drafted WRs like Randy Moss and a QB named Brady too early.

2. Those who have a life and play for fun, and don't want to be a prisoner of the computer or any Bill Bellicheck shenanigans every Sunday of the damn football season.

I have no problem with you being in group two . . . but why complain about it???Two weeks ago, I had video duty at church, and was unable to be here right before early kickoffs . . . I figured Westbrook might not play, so I played it safe and started Lamont Jordan . . . of course, you know the rest, Westy goes off against the Lions . . . am I bitter?? No, that's just life . . . I like the rule the way it is . . .

Our league has used a similar rule for several years now. Although it is slightly more restrictive.

In our league if any of your starters are listed as "Questionable" on the NFL injury report ( Now on Friday's NFL report ), you can use a "bubble" player ( ie. bench player ) that will play if your starter does not play in the game. If your starter plays at all then you get the points from your starter.

You can not use "bubble" players for starters who are listed as "Doubtful", "Probable" or "Out" ( obviously ).

So, owners still have to research to see if your starters are listed as "questionable", but you can have a life outside of frantically searching the web and pre-game shows to see if your questionable / game time decisions are going to play.
