Shocking, Walter is human. Don't idolize professional athletes. I always was a big fan of Walter and anything in this book will not change my opinion of him.
Picked this book up for my Kindle a few days ago. A few chapters in and it's a great read so far. I've gotten past the boyhood stuff and just reached the part where Payton competed in the college all stars vs NFL champs all star game prior to his first year with the Bears. It's been a terrific glimpse into the era during which the south went through the desegregation process. Payton went to the black high school in town and while a student, his school merged with the white school. Also, he was all set to be a Kansas State Wildcat, but through a series of what would probably be serious NCAA infractions today, he wound up at Jackson State.
Nothing yet has painted him in a negative light. In fact, it's quite the opposite. It's quite obvious that the publisher released the most salacious excerpts in order to create some buzz.
I love Payton and can't see the big deal here. Is anyone who watched him really surprised that he had to pop painkillers to play? Or that he found it difficult to stop taking after he retired? A non-story, IMO.
