Taking Luck or Griffin in a rookie draft (1 Viewer)

Please read the bolded question at the bottom, if you want to skip my personal scenario. Ok. So I am in one league where I have the 1.6 pick and Drew Brees and trash at QB. Lynch/Helu/Forte at RB and Meachem/Wallace/JBaldwin/Hankerson/Gettis/Lafell sitting at WR. The guy behind me kind of likes to just "reset" every few years in different leagues where he just gets as many rookie picks as he falls in love with the next big thing every year. After doing that this year, he is left with Freeman/Gabbert at QB. Has holes everywhere and picks 1.1, 1.7, 1.8, 1.11, 1.12, 2.1, 2.11 and 2.12.

The guy at 1.5 has Fitz/Flacco/Smith as QB and thinking he will go QB.

Do I take the QB here and try and "screw" the guy at 1.7 and try to get as many draft picks as I can?

Do I just take whats best for my team? Which prob would be WR.

Do I take QB and keep him, since I need one in a few years with Brees turning 34 this season?

Thanks for any responses. I offered 1.6 for 1.7/1.8 combo, but naturally, he turned it down.

How far do you let Luck or RG3 slip before you draft them just because the value is too high?

Take the remaining one and keep him. Getting Luck or RG3 at 1.06 is pretty good value.

I would also think in this scenario that Floyd and Blackman will be gone by 1.06, so any WR after that is a roll of the dice.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Rule #1, always do what's best for YOUR team and not worry about blocking others.
Word. I have played with the dude at #7 for a long long time and the thinking here, is the best thing for my team would be more draft picks..LOL. Thanks - you are right.

I think if you can't get good value for your pick during the draft, then the QB is a good place to stash that value. I think they will hold that value longer than a WR or RB taken in the middle of the 1st. Unless the WR or RB plays and produces immediately, you will likely see a drop in his value. With those QBs, however, they will get to start immediately and unless they do a JaMarcus Russell imitation, their value will likely rise.

I have Rodgers and back to back picks in the top half of the 1st. I'm thinking of taking both.

Yep. I have the 1.06 pick in the rookie draft this year and if Luck or RGIII somehow fall to 1.06, and Martin isn't still available, I'll likely take one of the two QBs (despite having Brees and Newton on my roster and because I'm already deep at WR).

I own 1.06 in one of my dynasty leagues. Rivers and Cutler are my QBs in this league so I'm not in need of Luck or RG3, but I'll gladly take either if one of them falls to me. Normally I'm not a fan of taking QBs early unless it's a high power QB scoring league, which this one is not. Luck and RG3 are such unique prospects, plus the NFL is so pass happy, that you have to take them unless you get a fair trade offer.

I own 1.05 in one league, 1.06 in another and stacked at QB in both. I'd be tickled pink if Luck or Griffin is sitting there with either pick. BPA.

I'm sitting on 1.4 and have Rodgers. I will be taking one of the 2 QBs there as I expect Richardson and Blackmon and one of the QBs to be gone when I pick. I pick again at 1.7. I will get the QB at 1.4 and BPA at 1.7.

simple: rank the rookies from 1 to 6 and pick the highest guy on your list when it's your turn.

But reading more of the OP, it actually does sound like a young potential-stud QB is a position of need for you since your backups are "trash" and your uber-stud starter will need to be replaced in the next 4 or 5 years or so.

I have the 1.07 with Stafford and Cutler at QB but would happily take Luck or RGIII there since I have them both ranked above the 7th best rookie.

I am in a start 1-2 QB league and I have McCoy, Sanchez, and Flynn. I will be taking RG3 at 1.01.

There is another reason, in this league college players are eligible for the draft and Luck, Richardson, Blackmon, and others were gone last year.

In another league I have the 1.03 and may end up with RG3 or Luck. I currently have Flynn, Newton, Dalton, and Brady, and since it is a one QB league I am really shopping Brady.

I believe if you have a chance to land a franchise QB that could be a stud for 8-10 years, i.e., Luck or RG3, then you take one of them.

I have Brees and then crap and would take Luck or Griffin at 1.3 or later if Richardson and Blackmon are gone. You can always look to trade if they come out the gate guns a blazin'. If you are stacked at WR, there could even be a case made for taking QB ahead of Blackmon.

Tough to trade a rookie QB no matter how promising for what I would get in return- the other 11 teams have a top 12 QB already. Although dynasty- I want to win this year too. IMO it would be easier to trade a rookie RB or WR......

With Brees at 34, yeah, I would take one of the QBs if they're available. You can always pick up a solid WR or RB next year and/or the year after, but good franchise QBs (especially if they're touted as the best thing since Peyton Manning) are a little harder to come by.

Lock up your QB position for the next 10 years now, then work on your RB/WRs. I'm doing the same (I plan on taking Luck with the 1.03 pick even with Rodgers on my roster, even though I can use more depth at WR).

I am in a 16 team league where QB score not too bad. I own Ell, Cutler and Flacco already so nicely set up but I am taking Luck at the 1.3 more than likely. I also do have the 1.7 and 1.9 so I can wait and get a WR and RB or TE there. BAP and in 16 team league, QB is harder to find than a 12 team. I think the guy at 1 should consider Luck as he needs everything and agree with the guy who said that you have a top QB for the next 13 years or so.

It's extremely likely Richardson, Blackmon, Luck, RGIII and Floyd will be the first 5 taken so I don't think you'll have to worry about it. I'd say the only one of those you have a chance at is possibly Floyd.

Same thing I thought. 1.6 will not have one of the two top qbs available in most drafts.

Nice try. :)

In full dynasty leagues you have to take BPA ... always
NoSitting at 1.3 this year with 2 up and coming qb's on a 12 team 20 roster and I am having to think twice about too many QB's on the roster
you will regret it

In start 2 QB leagues you have to pick one of the two if you do not already have a top 5 on your roster. Luck is better option of two by slim margin.
