The few times I saw him play, he looked like I expected. He's a decent looking rookie behind a questionable line.

What do people who've seen more detect?

I think that his biggest problem is his vision of the field. It doesn't seem like he can see as wide of an area as he needs to in order to make the right reads. Just by looking at some of the picks that he has thrown I think that he's fooled by coverages when he shouldn't be. I think his arm is good and his running ability is solid, he's a good athlete overall. He's able to key on a WR and make a good throw, but I don't think that he's able to read the defenders covering nearby receivers well enough and that leads to bad picks. He's young and as he gets more game experience I will be curious to see if he's making the same mistakes or not. Coaching and scheme could help him mask it somewhat, but something tells me that it's a significant weakness that will be hard to get past.

I saw every game. My take:

[*]Frequently hits receivers in stride, makes running after the catch easier

[*]Quick release

[*]Good maturity and composure on and off the field

[*]Decent scrambling ability and good pocket presence

[*]Doesn't have the arm strength for quick out routes

[*]Overall arm strength isn't as weak as advertised but long range accuracy is poor

It's too early for the Vikes to really know what they have in him, and he needs better pieces around him. O-line really let him down last year and made it difficult for him to go through his progressions. He had some very bad games but I still like his long term outlook. I think he could be above average, not a superstar but someone you can win with.

Arm strength is the last thing I worry about with QB's, unless their arm is extremely weak. After watching Brees develop from the same sort of QB you describe to one of the best in the league I know it's something that can be improved and the offense designed around.

Who are we talking about???
Nevermind. The Smartphone App doest show the Cristian Ponder sub-title.
Ain't so smart now, is it?I am goofing, but can't stand that feature/drawback either...No clue why it works that way.

Personally, I think Ponder could be a Trent Green-type (better numbers than results), and think that arm strength is something that QBs can work on. Obviously, there are muscle-building activities someone could do, but last I checked, it is a lot harder to improve on accuracy, vision, etc.

From what I saw, I believe he has the goods to be an above average NFL QB and to be a Top 7 fantasy QB(but probably not until 2013). He was an excellent student-athlete at Florida St and used that time to graduate in two and a half years and get a MBA in Finance. To me, that reads as if his total concentration was not on football as it will be now. As a rookie, the lockout hurt but it probably hurt him more since he seems more cerebral than most players. With an entire offseason to digest the information, I expect he will be able to let his athleticism take over and will be in more control of the offense in 2012. He is a dynasty buy for me if I can find a seller.

If I'm not mistaken, he was the most accurate QB in the league in the Red Zone and/or goalline situations last year. I think I read that he was 100% in those situations...never turning the ball over.

You know if the kid gets you there, your gonna find paydirt.

I wasn't very high on him coming out of college (and I'm a FSU fan). But I liked what I saw of him last year. His inconsistency and bad decisions is what frustrated me in college. Seemed to make bad throws too often at FSU.

I try to do numbers-based comparisons for the skill players entering the league. It's spotty at QB just because there are relatively fewer guys at that position than at RB or WR, but best guess for Ponder would be a mash up of the good parts of David Garrard and Mark Sanchez.

So probably a serviceable NFL guy, but not someone that's going to lead a team to a title unless he's surrounded by incredible talent on offense and backed by a great defense. Even then he probably doesn't project to a strong QB1 type for FF.

To me, he just looks like a quality QB. Maybe it's stature, or pocket-presence, I don't know, but he has "something".

He is a young starting QB and has some skills.

I think he will be able to improve on his own but think he can make big strides if the Vikes get him some receiver and protection help.

Good insights both on the good and bad.

I picked him up and hope he develops so I am interested in hearing any other takes on Ponder.

So in other words, you think he is Alex Smith.
