Tarvaris Jackson - So what? (1 Viewer)

I can't believe the amount of positive hype or people suggesting Tarvaris Jackson is an adequate QB.

What did he show last year?? 9 TD? 11 or 12 INT? Not a ton of yardage. I know having AD run is going to help and be the main thing, but this guy looks useless to me.

Two positives

He got is QB rating over 90 in 4 of his last 6 games

7 of his 9 TD's came in those last 6 games as well

Not saying this is enough to make him a great NFL or fantasy QB, but it does show some hope

Hype... I'm missing the hype... unless it's the lone positive comment that exists amidst his circa #17-25 QB ranking, next to Jeff Garcia.

IMO he is better than what he gets credit for. If anything the guy gets bashed everytime his name comes up. Where is the hype?

Have you guys read the Footballguys Mag for this year? I'll leave it at that so I don't give away any free information.

Three points.

1. Opponents found that eight-man fronts had some success in stopping Peterson and Taylor late on last season. You can guarantee most defensive coordinators will be focussing on stopping the run against the Vikings, and Minnesota did add Berrian to their WR corps, whilst Rice might progress in his 2nd year.

2. He will get quite a lot of rushing yardage and possibly a handful of rushing TDs too. In fact, if anything I think most of the FBG projections underplay this possibility. He rushed for 176 yards over the last six games last year when he resumed being the starter. That would translate to nearly 450 rushing yards over the season. Throw in the likely three or four rush TDs and that's roughly the equivalent of an extra 1500 yards passing. That's why he ranked the number 5 QB in my league over that last six-week period. Remember, Kordell Stewart wasn't much of an NFL passer, but for a year or two he was a really good fantasy passer, and Jackson is someone you might be able to get late, because the general view of him is that he can't play.

3. As the poster above states - read the FBG magazine.

He's in a good situation (good line, good supporting cast), and it VERY risky to judge a QB based on his first year starting. He looked a LOT better toward the end of the year compared to how he looked at the beginning, and that gives folks hope going forward.Steve Young, John Elway, Bradshaw, others were all "useless" when they started too. Not that I'm saying Jackson has that kind of talent, just that we don't really know what he might do yet - it's way too early to write him off.

the phrase 'he can't hit the ocean with a beachball' comes to mind when thinking about Tavaris Jackson.

I would not expect him to last as the starting QB of the Vikings this season...

Glad you mentioned that bolded part it made me check my league. He was the #8 QB over the last 6 weeks.

You people are funny. Check out his game splits, comparing the first half of the season to the second half and you'll see why some are cautiously optimistic.

I keep saying it but I'd expect numbers similar to what Cutler and Rivers put up last year.

your heart is telling you this andy, not your head.
Not at all. Since I actually watched all the Vikings games last year and saw the progress that Jackson was making I can rely on more than simply statistics upon which to base my opinions.

I also watched all the Vikings games last year and agree with Andy. Early reports are T-Jack has been working out hard during the off season and looks better. With BB and second year Rice at WR he will be better. His best WR at the start of last season was Bobby Wade.Jackson will never be a Brady, Manning, but yes he can be a Rivers, Cutler type QB, he may step back, but I betting on the forward movement.

Tarvaris Jackson is a great sleeper candidate, because quite frankly his offense is filled with blue chip personnel. The possible exception is TE. Yes, I think Berrian/S.Rice are blue chip WRs who would excel playing with most NFL QBs. IF Tarvaris can't lead this offense to a boatload of points in 2008, he does not belong as a starter in the NFL, and should be considered junk in FF terms.

This is the year though, and the price for Tarvaris is perfect to take that risk.
