What do you guys think of this guy and his future in Minnesota? First impressions after his first preseason game? Any value in dynasty leagues? Feel free to comment as you wish.

you can absolutely see it with this kid. 1st thing to look for in a young QB is poise, and he's clearly got it. He'll also have the scrambling ability and accuracy. Itll come down to field vision which he'll get with more experience, and opportunity. Considering Brad Johnson is the oldest QB in the league, I cant help but think he'll get the opporutunity. In short, he's gonna be a player.

He looked real good against a vanilla Raiders' defense made up of 2nd and 3rd team guys. The kid is clearly going to be the starting quarterback of the Vikings once Johnson can no longer get the job done.

I suspect Jackson could be starting by late 2007.

I like what the other guys said, he looks like Vick with great vision!

I'm not going to get all riled up about a rookie playing against 3rd stringers and the worst coached team in the NFL ( Raiders), but, he looks promising..

late rounder in a dynasty/keeper format, no doubt..worth a shot..

he is athletic & mobile, has a strong, accurate arm with a quick release...

he was throwing lasers that were hitting the WRs in stride all night...

he has a sweet, compact delivery & the ball explodes out of his hands on intermediate & longer passes.

he reminds me of a smaller mcnabb or mcnair, maybe quicker than those guys, & imo he is a more accurate passer at a comparable stage of his career...

childress was mcnabb's OC, & as QB coach he got McNabb's ex-coach from college....

guy is a natural & imo the real deal...

thought it is a little far fetched, he has a chance to evolve into the best QB from this class...

he's going to start this year if he continues to do what he did last night.

He'd have looked better with first stringers, as the bums he was throwing to dropped half of the passes he threw.

I disagree with the first statement, but would love to see him get a series or two with the first team too. He will be the #2 this season sooner than later IMO. McMahon could barely complete passes at the practices I saw this weekend. He and O'Sullivan took turns throwing interceptions.

I feel much better about taking BJ late and backing him up with Jackson after seeing him play. Looks like it could be a nice, cheap way to lock up a teams QB. He was exciting to watch. I didn't know too much about him, and thought he was a reach for the Vikes. Looks like it could be a nice pick.

Everyone always says "Well, he was up against a 2nd team vanilla defense", and that's true. But I thought that Jackson looked like a first stringer going up against 2nd and 3rd stringers, so I think it's fine to be encouraged by his play.

For reference, Culpepper's first action in his first preseason debute was a debacle. Fumbling the snaps and looking completely lost. Tarvaris looked more like a first round pick than Culpepper did in comparable situations at similar points in their career.

However, Jackson did make two poor decisions that could have resulted in defensive touchdowns going the other way had the defenders held onto the ball.

Grab him now and stick him on your bench / development squad / taxi squad NOW, if he wasn't drafted already.

He looked good and he's worth holding on to for the next year or two at least.

He could be the #2 QB entering the season in MIN, and if Brad Johnson doesn't ink a new deal (he's the 40th highest paid QB in the league - below Leinart as well now), TJax may be accelerated to the starter position next year.

if you haven't seen him play before you are in for treat....he has a cannon for an arm...and can run too...

just click on the little video clip next to his name....

matt jones, was quoted saying that when they played together at ark (before jackson left), travaris was the best athlete on the field....

I def. think this kid could be for real. He looked very impressive last night, thus far the most impressive of the rook/backuo QBs that I've seen.

I don't get the Vick comparisons other than he is black. Jackson is somewhat mobile but he's not even really considered a dual-threat QB- much less one that draws comparisons to Vick. He is a pure, pro-style, drop back passer.

Without acknowledging any differences or similarities about their play, their helmet and their built are very similar. If you were to watch the two players play on a black and white television, one may have a hard time differentiating the two of them standing under center.Having said that, Tarvaris is not the same athlete Vick is, but when Tarvaris ran the ball, he was pretty quick and pretty impressive.

Just came here to write what these two gents did.Easy with the Vick comparisons. Jackson is mobile, but he's not in Vick's class athletically. Still, Jackson is a very impressive looking kid. If he can come anywhere near the things Cunningham and Culpepper did in Minny, he's going to make a lot of his owners pretty happy.

However, Jackson did make two poor decisions that could have resulted in defensive touchdowns going the other way had the defenders held onto the ball.
Which two were these? The only poor decision I saw from him was when he opted to charge forward rather than slide, and that's why he didn't come back in (knocked in the head by Bing)

I don't recall the exact play numbers in the game. One was an out pattern and the defender broke on the ball. He had nothing but sideline, but he dropped the ball. I believe the Vikings were inside the Raiders 40. The second one was later in the game and the Vikings were in their own territory. Tarvaris appears to be throwing to a receiver in the slot running a hook pattern. The defender broke on the ball and ended up deflecting the ball. I believe the pass was to high for both the defender and intended receiver. Nothing out of the ordinary for a division II quarterback playing in his first real action. These mistakes are easily correctible.

I believe he was throwing it to Chris Jones. It was a simple pattern and he held it just a bit long, simple fix. Pass was fine, he just looked too long over there and held it a second too late.He did return after getting elbowed by Bing, just not immediately afterwards.

Jackson is not going to keep OC up at night the way Vick does, but he did put a really nice move on one of the Raider LBers at one point for a nice gain. I did not see enough of him to tell if he could move around in the pocket a la Brady. That is becoming a key attribute for modern QBs.

I think he's a year away. People are eager to want him to start because he certainly is exciting to watch. But try not to forget that the Vikings have a fairly established group of veterans and in that division, they can contend in the NFC w/ Johnson taking the snaps.

I agree, Colin. But what happens if Johnson is injured? I think many fantasy owners will be sad to see McMahon start .... atleast for a while

If Johnson gets hurt, without a doubt McMahon gets first crack as the starter. Whether he could keep the position is very debateable.

incidentally, it was matt jones who said that... he transferred from arkansas... high praise since jones is a fair athlete himself...

many called him a reach but the vikings heard that there might be some interest from other teams so they didn't goof around & hope dropped to them...

he seems to have all the physical tools, just needs to learn how to read defense like all young QBs (& he reportedly has a great work ethic so he should get there)... he was also praised at the combine for his ability to hit WRs out of the breaks... that kind of timing is almost an innate, instinctive ability & he has it...

i think his learning curve has accellerated... just few weeks ago he was considered too raw to be anything but a project for a year or two... now he looks like he could be a functional backup (showed me more in a few minutes than mcmahon has in a few years) & groomed to possibly take over as soon as some point in 2007.

I wouldv'e rather the Vikings drafted Abdul Hogde in the 2nd, myself.
That's a completely different can of worms. Cedric Benson looks pretty decent so far too. If you're talking Ryan cook, then I can hear it. Jackson though, this kid looks like he just might have "it".
