Tarvaris Jackson (1 Viewer)

I was impressed with his play in preseason. Seems like an intriguing prospect. How long before he takes the #2 spot from Bollinger? BJ looks like the end of the road is fast approaching and Bollinger is just a caretaker until Jackson is ready. I was hoping TJ would have gotten some reps in the 4th quarter Monday night, but alas, it was not to be. Maybe a little too soon after knee surgery. What do you guys think? Is this kid a big time talent?

I'm pretty sure Jackson had already taken over the #2 spot earlier this year, but that he's still recovering from some injury.

I thought the real question is when he takes over for Johnson at the #1 :stirspot:

If I were a gambling man, I'd say he'll start this year after the Vikings are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, or at least for one game this season.

And I believe he will be the starter next season.

I don't know the intricacies of Brad Johnson's contract, but I don't think he's a Viking next year.

I'm fairly high on Jackson. I drafted him late in a dynasty league but had to make a trade for this year. I traded Jackson and Driver for Grossman and Cotchery. This is a league whereby QB's are hard to come by and I only had Plummer/Cutler as a starter and it's killing my team. I hated to give him up but I got a proven commodity in Grossmand that can outperfom Plummer and I should be solid for the future as well.

Jackson will do well in due time and it'll be sooner (next year) rather than later. I could see him being a top 15 QB but it's really a guessing game right now until we see him in some real action. But he has great potential IMO.

I traded for Jackson a few weeks ago in one of my dynasty leagues. I think he's a great guy to target right now. He showed well in the preseason and has a nasty set of skills. He could definitely be their starter as soon as next season.

Rookies who come out of the gates hot are almost inevitably overrated. I wouldn't really recommend making a play for a guy like Colston, Jennings, or Maroney because their owners have almost certainly bought the idea that their rookie is a surefire stud for the next five years. However, there's a beautiful flipside of this that you can exploit.

Rookies who come out of the gates cold are almost always undervalued. Instead of targeting the guys who are racking up the hype, it's probably a better investment to target invisible rookies like Willie Reid, Marcedes Lewis, Brian Calhoun, Tarvaris Jackson, and Jay Cutler. They offer similar long-term prospects at a fraction of the cost. Owners who bought low on Derek Hagan and Santonio Holmes early in the season have already received a nice return on their investment.

Reality is, whether Jackson ultimately succeeds or fails, it's a near guarantee that his value will increase from its present level. That makes him a no-brainer pickup if you can get him at a fair price.

I think B. Johnson has one more contract year and the plan is still to bring Jackson along slowly. When he was drafted, the coaches said it would be a three year progression and I don't see much flexibility on their plans.

I didn't want to, bt I had to create a dynasty roster space and cut him this year. I still don't thinh he starts next year but could beyond. If you have the spot, hold on to him

I agree with your point, but I don't think any of these guys have come out of the gates cold. Jackson and Cutler were downright hot in preseason. Jackson and Cutler are on teams that have playoff chances, so their team has no reason to go to a rookie QB right now (unlike Tennessee and Arizona). Lewis was also tearing it up in camp before suffering the dreaded high ankle sprain. Calhoun and Reid were not hot, but they weren't cold either (as compared to say, Eric Shelton in training camp last year).

I still think they need a legitimate receiver on that team before any QB can produce. Marcus Robinson is a candidate, but he can't play much longer, and all that I have seen in Williamson is that he drops passes.

This coming from a Jackson dynasty owner.

It's Tavaris not Tarvaris.

Barring injury it's difficult to see him playing this year ( let alone starting). He is coming from Alabama State where he was good not great. He has been injured and has not been able to practice for parts of the season. He was #2 for the opener but Bollinger has been the #2 since then. Childress has said he is not contemplating a QB change and that he wants to develop TJackson this year with out him playing.

I assume Jackson will get a look soon, but don't be surprised to see Matt Schaub wearing a Viking uniform next season. I think the Vikings tried to get him this year.

Vikings now 4-6. Will Johnson lose his job? If he does, who becomes the starter - Jackson or Bollinger?
Seems about right, since I made a deadline deal to acquire BJ for my playoff stretch run.Jackson was a hot commodity dynasty-wise, but I can't imagine that his injury helped him at all. Next year's starter would be a LOOOOONG shot for him.

But why would they try to sign him now after drafting Jackson so high. I thought he'd be a much lower pick coming from a small school, so I felt that the Vikings must have seen something in him. Wouldn't it make more since to sign a vet like say maybe Plummer if he gets cut loose.

So.... Johnson looked brutally bad today. Bollinger comes in and gets injured.

Please post updates about the Vikes QB situation going forward.

They have a CAKE fantasy playoff schedule, and their QB could be huge!

Tarvaris got in for the entire fourth quarter in todays game against the Jets. Threw a TD and a Int. Overall seemed to have a little better spark to the offense than Johnson, although that may have been the defense the Jets were playing as well.

Will he be the QB next year? Remainder of this year? Seems obvious that the coach wants to see what they have and is willing to give him some playing time. This loss should pretty much eliminate the Vikes from any playoff hopes realistically.

Thoughts?

added: Also had a nice 9 yard scramble on 4th and 6 to keep a drive going late in the game.

Thought he looked good today- made smart decisions. That INT was a solid play by Barrett - tough to fault Jackson for it.

His arm is strong and accurate. I don't see why he wouldn't get some time to end the year.

Bumping back up for more discussion now that he has been named the starter. I am excited to see what he can do against a team that has gameplanned a bit against him and for an entire game.

I'm sure he will have some rookie mistakes, but he has had a fair amount of time behind Brad to learn, and seemed good so far when he's gotten a chance.

Be wary of this kid. He's raw. High risk high reward for what you'll probably need to pay for him in a dynasty, right now. He's got the physicality, but will need to improve in many tecnical areas to compete next year. I like him, but wont overpay to get him.
