Tatum's toe (1 Viewer)

Lame title dude. There is nothing about a new injury - for all we know Tatum was given today off strictly as a precautionary measure.

Turf toe... it just don't heel well. Many speculate that as a big part of Eddie George's downfall.. he kept playing on it and playing on it.

As a Tatum owner in a playoff-centric league... shelve him until week 16 or the playoffs... or at least a couple weeks.

Turf toe isn't about nutting it up and playing hurt... you literally can't make the moves/cuts regardless how much of Brett Favre's medicine cabinet you raid... it makes it worse.

If you have a BELL or even two..how you get into the possible playoffs of your league..they both suck! :banned:

Playoff centric league = leagues that go through the Super Bowl.why anyone still bases a league championship circa week 16 is so bush league, it's astounding.

This isn't a surprise given the nature of the injury but I think we may be getting closer to the time when we can officially stick a fork in Tatum for the rest of the season.

From RotoWorld:

ESPN's John Clayton reports Tatum Bell will be dealing with his turf toe problems for the remainder of the season.

Clayton envisions Tatum being inconsistent the rest of the year and says it won't be a surprise if Bell sits out this week. He's listed as questionable and missed practice Thursday, so that's a definite possibility. Mike Bell might get another chance to start if Tatum is inactive, and lose a few carries to either Damien Nash or Cedric Cobbs.

Source: ESPN Insider

We didn't need John Clayton to tell us that this injury would linger all year. Unlike the torn ACL, modern medicine has yet to catch up with the dreaded turf toe.

I'm not sure what the point is of playing a guy who's clearly injured and clearly isn't anywhere close to being his usual self.

On whether he has a timetable for RB Tatum Bell’s return

“Practice by practice. We evaluate these guys every day. One of the reasons why we went in a different direction this weekend was how these backs practiced. Both Mike (Bell) and Damien (Nash) practiced extremely well and looked quick and played better.”

On how he will use Tatum Bell this week

“Like I said, we’re going to evaluate it. If Tatum’s ready to go full speed, he’s going to go. But if he’s hesitant to make the cuts that he’s capable of making, we’ll go in a different direction.”

I think the most encouraging part of Mike Bells game yesterday was how he always gets positive yards on every carry. He gained 90 yards, with a long of 8 yards...

These are his carries:

1-10-DEN9 (8:34) M.Bell left guard to DEN 15 for 6 yards (J.Williams)

2-10-DEN42 (7:24) M.Bell right guard to DEN 46 for 4 yards (R.Godfrey).

1-10-DEN12 (:01) M.Bell right tackle to DEN 18 for 6 yards (T.Kiel; R.Godfrey).

PENALTY on SD-M.Harris, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at DEN 12 - No Play.

1-5-DEN17 (:00) M.Bell up the middle to DEN 23 for 6 yards (R.Godfrey, J.Williams).

3-4-SD33 (11:42) M.Bell right tackle to SD 28 for 5 yards (R.Godfrey).

1-10-SD28 (11:00) M.Bell up the middle to SD 25 for 3 yards (R.Godfrey; M.Harris).

2-3-SD5 (9:04) M.Bell up the middle to SD 3 for 2 yards (D.Edwards; R.Bingham).

3-1-SD3 (8:21) M.Bell up the middle for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

1-10-DEN16 (6:34) M.Bell right tackle to DEN 20 for 4 yards (M.Harris, J.Cesaire).

1-10-SD11 (1:19) M.Bell up the middle to SD 3 for 8 yards (S.Phillips, D.Florence).

2-2-SD3 (:39) M.Bell up the middle for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

1-10-SD47 (14:50) M.Bell left tackle to SD 44 for 3 yards (J.Williams).

2-7-SD44 (14:13) M.Bell right guard to SD 41 for 3 yards (J.Cesaire).

1-10-DEN20 (3:51) M.Bell left tackle to DEN 28 for 8 yards (C.Polk, J.Williams).

2-2-DEN28 (3:12) M.Bell left tackle to DEN 33 for 5 yards (D.Edwards).

1-10-DEN33 (2:33) M.Bell left tackle to DEN 41 for 8 yards (M.McCree).

3-5-SD49 (15:00) M.Bell up the middle to SD 45 for 4 yards (I.Olshansky; R.Bingham).

4-1-SD45 (14:19) M.Bell left end to SD 42 for 3 yards (C.Polk).

1-10-DEN20 (6:45) M.Bell up the middle to DEN 25 for 5 yards (J.Williams, T.Kiel).

2-5-DEN25 (6:09) M.Bell right tackle to DEN 28 for 3 yards (D.Edwards).

3-2-DEN28 (5:25) M.Bell right guard to DEN 32 for 4 yards (S.Cooper; M.Harris).
Notice, not one of his carries was for negative yardage...Also, he did a great job on getting first downs (bolded carries)...

As a Denver fan, i'd much rather see Mike Bell in the game then Tatum.

Unfortunately I have to monitor this mess - this is good information. Thanks broncofan. Shanny seems like he just wants consistency and players who fulfill their assignments. Check and check for MBell in this game. 8 yard long is not great, but I don't think MBell was expected to be great. If Tatum is not ready to go, Mike should get the load again. Unless he missed blocking assignments, but I didn't watch the game to know that.

What, and miss out on the great holiday tunes?Commingled Bells

Dashing through the hole

Is a Denver back today.

O'er the field he'll go

Hustling all the way.

His stats will make you sing,

Make your spirits bright,

But only if you are able

To guess the Bell that's right.

Oh...

Tatum Bell or Mike Bell,

Which one's gonna play?

Oh what fun it is to guess

Which is gonna start today-ay!

Just one Bell or both Bells?

Shanny just won't say.

Oh what fun it is to guess

Which is gonna start today.

You don't want to know. :bag:

I missed the Sunday night game but when did we know Tatum was not going to play? Was it bad research by yours truly or was this a gametime decison. I woke up Monday and found Mike Bell had gotten all the carries and tatum played the same amount of minutes as I did. :sadbanana:

I had M Bell penciled in as a flex player in a league where I could have pulled him for Rod Smith at the last minute, so I was watching closely. The game was a 8:15 ET start, and people on the board were in the dark until close to 7:45 when Rotoworld and fflivewire both relayed info from denverbroncos.com at about the same time. So it was about 7:45 when message boarders started seeing the info here if they were sitting in the right thread. I don't recall that a dedicated "MIKE BELL STARTS!" thread ever popped up, so some didn't get the message until too late. As far as radio/TV coverage, I have no idea. I didn't have the game on the tube yet.

Thanks. I was long gone by then anyway so it wouldn't have mattered so i don't feel like a slug about it.

i got dinged on this too.i hate being stuck with players that play after 1:00 on Sunday.

Denver scores a lot more points when Mike is playing.

When Tatum gets the rock they have a tough time getting to 17. With Mike, they're scoring 27, 27 and 31.

Today's week 12 toe update (Rotoworld):

Tatum Bell-RB- Broncos Nov. 21 - 9:06 am et Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that RB Tatum Bell (toe) will play Thursday if he's healthy. The Broncos reportedly held Bell out of Week 11 to give him a chance to heal up for this week. "If Tatum's ready to go and he's full speed, he'll go," Shanahan said. "If he's hesitant and can't make the cut he's capable of making, we'll go another direction."Source: Rocky Mountain NewsVerrrrry valuable useless wishy-washy stuff here. I suppose it's the truth though. Commingled Bells, this stuff smells.

Stop me if you've heard this one before ... but Tatum Bell said he should be ready to play next week.

Has running back Tatum Bell fallen behind Mike Bell and Damien Nash on the Broncos' depth chart? He doesn't think so. For the third game in five weeks, Tatum Bell was inactive. He has been bothered by turf toe issues on both feet the past month, but he has been participating in all recent workouts and was upgraded to probable on the injury report the past two weeks.

Bell was among the NFL rushing leaders with 97.5 yards per game through the Broncos' first six games. Last week against San Diego, Tatum Bell watched in sweats while Mike Bell and Nash combined for 30 carries and 142 yards.

"It was the coaches' decision that they wanted me to be 100 percent," Tatum Bell said. "And not 60, 70, 80 or 90 percent. Next week I should be ready to go."

The Week 13 version of "Will Tatum Play Or Won't He?" has begun. From RotoWorld:

Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that he thinks "Tatum (Bell) will be back" against Seattle on Monday night in Week 13.

Tatum (toes) will have had 23 days of rest by Monday night. We worry about Mike Bell taking goal-line carries, but Tatum has a good chance to carry the bulk of the load. Monitor his practice regimen this week.

:kicksrock: <------------------- How the injury occurred
what a pansy
LOL at everyone who wants to call Tatum Bell a "pansy" or a "wuss" for not playing through his turf toe injury. Now I've never had turf toe, but it seems to be that it would be a pretty painful injury for a player in a position where planting your feet and cutting are essential to having success. I guess its easier to just say the dude is a dandy then to try and understand how difficult it must be to play football with a mangled toe.

Regardless who is in there, it will be interesting to see if the running game takes a further step back with Cutler.

While Plummer wasn't scaring anyone, he at least brought some credibility as a seasoned vet. Not so much with Cutler, who will have to avoid the deer in the headlights look.

Someone said it either here or in another thread, but maybe with the running game finally coming down to earth, perhaps next year the team will just settle on an external guy and the gamesmanship can finally end. Wishful thinking perhaps, and this is coming from a Mike Bell owner.

If Tatum is even close, i bet he plays, i doubt they want MIke back there with a rookie qb, Tatum should have some more experiance blocking etc,.

Tatum's comments about being ready to play next Sunday. From RotoWorld:

After Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that he expects Tatum Bell (toes) to be ready for Week 13, Tatum seconded the notion.

"I’m back, baby," Tatum said. "I’m starting. Trust me. I’m for real. I’m hungry." He's confident, but as always, his practice schedule is worth monitoring. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Broncos' running back situation come down to a game-time decision again this week.
