Tavon Austin - Upside (1 Viewer)

The best barometric, physical prowess comparison I can think of is this guy:

http://www.nfl.com/player/dantehall/2504165/careerstats

If you compare Hall's apex on offense in 2003, you'll find them nearly identical to Austin's rookie year stats. 40 catches. 10 ypc. So Hall's offensive ceiling is Austin's floor. Obviously, Austin may have more WR skill and craftsmanship, so there is obvious room to grow. That told, they have similar physical dimensions.

Hall was the "Human Joystick" and rarely took a hit. Phenomenally fast and elusive but not physical or a tackle breaker.
Except that Hall was a RB who had 22 career receptions in college, compared to Austin's 288.
I was more comparing them physically rather than skillset wise. I recognize and acknowledged in my post that Hall's offensive career year is almost exactly what Austin accomplished in his rookie year. The similarity in numbers is almost astonishing. Thus, Dante Hall's offensive ceiling is Austin's floor.

Yes it is a vote of confidence for the receiving weapons already on the roster, also Bailey, Cook, etc.
Or you could say, they drafted the best T and run blocker in the draft and perhaps the top RB. This is an indication they want to throw the ball as little as possible.

In the nfl, the pecking order for building the foundation of a team goes

Franchise qb

De

Lt

Line (either side)

To me, it looks like they are just building the right way. Solid draft. They have several young pass catchers that are still right where they should be in terms of stage of development.

Didn't see this earlier. It isn't necessarily mutually exclusive that they could still be positive about Austin and want to run more effectively. Many teams both run and pass.

* There are ways in which a strong run game could help, not hurt the pass game (lot of eight in the box leaves three in coverage, sustain more drives, etc.).

So are people buying? I'm considering it, less because of the TDs and more because of the quotes about trying to get him involved in the offense.

I have Quick, who is seemingly still hurt, so thinking of using that spot for Tavon instead.

He had 5 targets for -2 yards, tough to get very optimistic since he's not going to rush for TD's every week.

Yeah I grabbed him before the season started but I'm not to excited about his receiving prospects after that game. Looks like he's just a gadget player.

There is only one scenario in which Tavon has value: you're decimated by injuries and byes. You plug him in because you're desperate, and he just happens to score a TD on a gadget play.

Good point, though the -2 yards might not be an every week occurrence, either.

I'm curious if new OC Cignetti can be more creative than his predecessor getting the ball in his hands.

BTW, Austin was voted ST player of the week. He is the first in league history with a 75+ yard punt return TDs in each of his first three seasons, fifth in 20 years with a punt return and rushing TD in the same game (first Ram since **** Bass in '61) and already is tied for the Rams punt return TD record in just the first game of the third season into his career.

At the most he should be the WR that comes in on 3 WR sets. Fisher is incapable of admitting he should have never been a 1st round WR pick.

Looks like a boom/bust #3 guy now. Not exactly what we thought he'd be as a rookie, but not worthless anymore either
