TE Juwan Johnson, NO (1 Viewer)

Jeff Nowak
Juwan Johnson has been on a bit of a 'pitch count' to start the 2024 season as he works back from foot surgery, via @WWLAMFM
- WK1: 27 snaps
- WK2: 30 snaps
- WK3: 33 snaps

It's a factor (at least one of them) in the slow start for the #Saints TE. More ⤵️

He’s received a lot of grief this week, but before his near-TD catch, #Saints TE Juwan Johnson showed up big in his expanded role.

Why tight ends are back in New Orleans, Kellen Moore’s offense.

@32BeatWriters
“It’s clear that the Saints and head coach Kellen Moore see a big role for the converted wide receiver this year and have already started things out with heavy volume and a massive workload. Johnson was on the field for all but one offensive snap…”

My overreaction is JJ had a 99% snap count in a Kellen Moore offense who ran a route on every single pass play (46) + lead the team with 2 redzone targets.
Factors deflating my overreaction:
1. Spencer Rattler - Poor efficiency. Inability to complete drives. Low efficiency in redzone/goaline situations. Changing of QB.
2. Unsustainability - JJ isn't going to continue a 99% snap count week to week.
3. Injury history - Recurring groin/muscle strains throughout his career. Flared up in July.
4. Industry expects NO to land the #1 pick to draft Archie Manning. Are there any behind the curtain vibes to lose games? Limiting upside.

He is also just not that good. Even with this big boxscore, he still graded mediocre.

Opportunity for huge volume mostly outweighs this for fantasy.

I went into my FFPC leagues waivers last night thinking I was aggressive going into the $200's(out of 1,000) for him. Ha. I don't even think I had a runner up bid. Average winning bid in the Main Events was $420, $327 in their junior contest.

I'm not comfortable going that high on him but I'm not snickering at those winning bids either. I mainly went lower on notion people would just see him as a journeyman and dismiss him but I think that thought process is wrong and I'd give credit to those who did not see it that way.

They paid him very well, fairly close to Evan Engram money on a team that lacks a lot of bigger bodied receivers with new addition Vele really the only other receiving option of size. It's probably injury related as much as staff change that he went from a 65% type player to close to a 100% type but those other TE's that are hurt are not expected back anytime soon.

So we got a naturally talented receiving TE, who just got paid well, new staff, he's an every down TE right now when that's becoming increasingly rare and just left week one as the TE target leader. It all checks.

If anything I'm feeling right now I should have got more aggressive in leagues I need a TE then thinking people went to high on him.

20 Targets thru 2 games.

Spencer Rattler at QB

How we feeling about this guy moving forward?

Seems like he's a lock to get 100+ Targets easily this year

JJs role won't change much even when Hill and Foster comeback few weeks from now. He might lose a few targets, but not many.
Once the QB forms that chemistry, that connection with a player it is there for good. They trust them,a nice safety valve.
He'll be at least a top 12 TE by years end imo...Maybe top 10.. Can't beat all the targets he gets and will to continue to do so ...

The Saint paid JJ to be a big piece of this passing attack, and he's a great safety net for inexperienced QBs- I think they continue to feature him prominently unless he gives them a reason not to. Can't expect this pace all year, but he could very well be top 5 in PPR if this is how the team envisions his role moving forward.

I dunno, Johnson is clearly benefitting from their absence right now. That said, I am growing into more and more a believer in Rattler, who does seem to lean on Juwan.

We like him or Jake Ferguson more for ROS?
Juwann always has a nice floor. Bad team. Offense is going to throw at least 40 times a game. That gives him at least 8 targets a game and usually higher. TDs going to be hard to come by but in PPR the volume is great.

Ferguson going to be a beast next 4-6 weeks while CD is out. Think Otton when Godwin and Evans went down last year. Once CD is back though, idk.
