Initially, I was unsure about how G.Olsen projects in the pro game over the next few years, given the learning curve and adjustments that young pass-catchers must endure as they start their NFL careers. But with just the limited sampling (preseason action) and the positive reviews coming out of Chicago regarding this guy, I've come to my own conclusion that Olsen will be Top 5 at his position within 2-3 years, and maybe even pushing for Top 3 honors on a consistent basis.
The hand-eye coordination and separation that I've seen from him reminds me a lot of a guy named Brent Jones from 49'er lore, and trust me, as a Raider fan I don't like comparing guys to 9ers over my beloved Raiders, please forgive me Dave Casper but you just weren't fast enough. And speed is what will truly enable Olsen to enter into the elite. He also appears to have a very good understanding of the passing game which I believe could hold back a guy like Vernon Davis, his possible lack of "instincts" in the passing game.
Gates has been virtually the undisputed King of TEs for the past few seasons, and Tony G. sat atop the throne for many seasons before that, but over the course of the next few seasons, the TE position will be very deep and "top heavy", IMO, with a new name added towards the top, Greg Olsen. I don't know how long guys like Heap (seemingly always banged up), KW II and Crumpler (both guys have troubled knees) can hold up, and Shockey is a train wreck in waiting, on and off the field, so I'm projecting the Top 3 TEs over the next 4-5 years to be Gates, Olsen, and Vernon, in no particular order.
