TE Rico Gathers, Free Agent (1 Viewer)

So is it possible, just possible that the Cowboys are slow playing the rest of the league and are going to unleash Gronk 2.0 on the league this year?

ESPN's Todd Archer does not expect Cowboys TE Rico Gathers to make the initial 53-man roster.

Gathers is a favorite of the fantasy community because of his receiving ability, but he has apparently not shown enough as a blocker to earn a role. Considering the state of their passing-game weapons, it makes sense for Dallas to keep Gathers around simply because of his big-play ability, but it does not seem like that will happen. Blake Jarwin will likely be Dallas' main pass-catching weapon at tight end, but he is only worth a look in extremely deep leagues.

For anyone who believes there's a chance that Rico Gathers can help an NFL team as a receiving-only TE who isn't required to block just to see the field, getting released would be a best-case scenario.  Dallas tried to develop him to be the type of well-rounded TE they want, but that's just not him.  Dallas won't utilize him that way, because they want their TEs to be able to block for Elliott and serve as a good dump-off option for Dak.  Other offensive schemes may be able to utilize what he DOES bring to the table in a different way without changing their offense around.

He may never get that opportunity.  He may not be as talented as a receiver as some think and maybe he'll get released and not even resurface anywhere.  But getting released and landing in a better offensive scheme that can use a TE who can't block will be the only way to find that out.  I for one hope that happens, because I don't think he'll remain unsigned if Dallas releases him.

I've never seen anyone anywhere say he's some superstar dynasty stash.  Most preseason TE dynasty rankings I've seen list him in the low to high 30's range among TEs... and that's high for a guy who's never logged an NFL regular season snap.  He's still a worthwhile guy to stash in 12 team leagues with 24 or more player rosters.

Appreciate it, I am at a conference in ATL and was speaking with a potential new client who could send me a massive amount of business.

Even so I was very close to telling him to give me a minute because I gotta finish off a hilarious zinger I have been setting up on magic football message board.
It's good you have your priorities in order

Football Jones has said it multiple times.  It might actually be in every one of his posts.

I only play in one magic football league for the last 20+ years and because of this thread Rico will definitely be my last pick in my draft this Saturday.

You're welcome.

It amazes me there are some FFers who don't understand the concept of a stash. It literally means hold in case they develop.

I've had a lot of success stashing developmental players (like Robby Anderson, for instance). Another player I've stashed in dynasty leagues is Chad Kelly (going back to before the start of last season).

The good thing about stashes is if you hit on 1 out of 5 you're WAY ahead of the game. It's a tremendous advantage to end up with a good player who you acquired essentially for nothing.

Rico's story isn't written yet, but it wouldn't be surprising if he busts despite his enormous upside. That's what stashes do (they bust).

So, do you hit on one of five?

The line can get blurred on who is viewed as a legitimate long-term stash (until they either do something or it becomes clear they bust) like Rico or those players you're simply using a roster spot for just to see if they can make a quick impact for either depth purposes or to turn a profit in trade.

If I consider strictly players I liked as long-term stashes, I have a very good success rate in my dynasty leagues, but I'd have to do some research to come up with an exact ratio.

Don't take this the wrong way but, absent data my guess is that prospecting success is probably closer to sales success rates. If you get 1 out of 100 to buy in you're winning.

1 in 100? LOL.

I don't know my exact success rate, but it's quite good considering they're stashes & what that implies.

My point with the 1 in 5 comment was that at 20%, you would be killing it. Meaning, you can have a much lower success rate with your stashes as opposed to players you spend capital on.

This guy is no worse of a stash than someone like Carroo or Janis (or Joe Williams, who is awful), who many held onto for far too long. Sure, they didn't work out and the odds are against Rico having a meaningful NFL career, but at this point I don't see any harm in playing out the string. See where he lands after he's likely cut and make a call then. I'm team Rico but I'm not holding through this season unless there is what I perceive to be a positive outcome after cuts. Part of this too is that TE is such a shallow position and if a guy has any potential to be a difference maker, that's worth a stash for some period of time. Rico has physical gifts and he can catch a football at the TE position - to me that makes him worthwhile until the book is finally closed.

Yep. At this point, it's probably best if Rico is cut by Dallas as far as his FF value is concerned.

Much like you, I'll hold until the situation is under par. If he clears waivers or ends up behind a youngish established player, I'll likely cut bait.

Madden season 2 is in the books. Dispite Rico missing 6 games to injury,  “Zeus” posted an impressive 71 for 1,022 and 8 TDs.

Sky is the limit.

Rico Gathers plays early, gets 2 catches on 2 targets. Both good for fist downs in quarters 2 and 3.

Dalton Schultz out there in the late 3rd quarter of preseason game #4.

I agree with this.

It also looks like Swaim is locked in at TE. Jarwin is closest to Rico in athletic ability, but doesn't catch as well.
I liked Jarwin as a sleeper but he hasn't shown much in preseason. Hard to see nay of these guys being fantasy relevant as of today.

About to cut the guy in TE-premium dynasty, 24 man rosters. Holding Kenneth Dixon, Roc Thomas, C.J. Prosise and DaeSean Hamilton.

Lotta hope on my roster.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said TE Rico Gathers "has a good shot" to make the 53-man roster.

Gathers spent most of training camp behind Blake Jarwin, Geoff Swaim, and Dalton Schultz. His blocking had his roster spot in doubt, but he's shown enough receiving upside to stick around. Gathers could make an impact if he finds his way into snaps, though he looks destined to open the year as a weekly inactive.

Worst case scenario for his dynasty prospects is actually making Dallas' roster if they're not going to deploy him as a pass catching TE in 2 TE sets where the other guy can block.  Or maybe they realized they need someone who can be a red zone mismatch or who can actually be a threat in the passing game from the TE position.

Wish he'd get released and see where he might land though.
