Tell me about Los Angeles (1 Viewer)

Ok. I will be in LA for one day. I have a long layover(arrive at 6am, flight out is at 11pm) and will have a rental car. Looking for interesting stuff to see as well as recommendations for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I am thinking of hitting the Stinking rose for dinner as im a huge garlic fan and ive heard its good, but i could be swayed. Any ideas?
It's pretty meh. What day of the week you in town?

It will be a Wed.

Meh...I've been once and wasn't impressed with the food at all. There are much better places...
I'm all ears.

for the record the only places ive been to previously in LA were: Lawry's, Rascos Chicken and waffles(considered re-visiting), In-N-Out, Mr. Chows there's a few others that i cant recall.

If you're as big a fan of garlic as you say, The Stinking Rose seems like a good bet. The best breakfast in Los Angeles is at The Griddle Cafe. For lunch I suggest The Apple Pan for burgers. Of course, if you have breakfast at The Griddle Cafe then I doubt you will be hungry for lunch, especially if you order the pancakes. They are huge!

If you're a fan of burgers Id recommend any of the following places:

*Umami Burger (locations throughout LA)

*Father's Office (West LA and Santa Monica)

*Plan and Check (West LA)

*Oh My Burger (Gardena)

One of the best restaurants downtown is Bottega Louie. It's generally Italian but have more options. Their pizza is really good.

the 405 is the worst freeway on the planet

leave early, don't stress it. you might want to chill out and have dinner until 7 or so on friday

this is in response to the dude going to santa anita

405 does suck. However, if one is already at the airport, they're already in close proximity to the 105 and the 10 which can take anyone to West LA, Santa Monica, and other beaches. For just one day I wouldn't fool with grandiose plans. Just find a few places to eat and relax. (In response to the layover).

So on a Wed, with my flight at 11:15pm, wherever i am, i should head to the airport by around 7pm?

BTW Unami burger looks delicious

Traffic shouldn't be a problem that late at night. As long as you're not deep in the OC or the Valley you could leave wherever you at by 9:00pm and be fine.

Fathers Office over Unami? I guess you can't go wrong with either. For me it comes down to variety and I prefer the variety of Unami over the FO burger. But like I said -- both are excellent choices.

If I were you I'd head to santa monica/venice area. You can hangout for the day and its really convenient to get to the airport. An 11:15 flight you can leave at 9:15-9:30 no problem. Fathers office on Montana has a great burger. I'd personally choose that over umami if you can only have one. There's also a fun BYOB place on ocean called cha cha chicken. It's cuban/carribean style. Lemme know if you want any other recommendations. That's my hood.

I'm taking the wifey to see a show at the Hollywood Bowl. In return I get to see Tom Petty at the Fonda Theater and Robert Earl keen at the Canyon Club and the Santa Barbara Live Oaks Festival.

I will be staying in the LA area for 3 days. I have tons of Marriott points, so I prefer to stay there.

Having said that, which Marriott property should I stay at? I'm not going to get a car rental until we leave LA, so for the first three days, I was just going to cab it, and/or take a shuttle to the Bowl.

I booked the Marina Del Rey Marriott, but I noticed that area has not been mentioned in this thread. Is it that bad?

Mdr is a very sleepy town. Rent a car or you will pay a fortune in cabs (mdr to Hollywood bowl will be at least 75). Manhattan, redondo or santa monica are better beach cities.
Love the twitter updates. Thanks for stopping in. Good luck!!

That really does depend on where you are. If you're in the valley or Burbank (semi-valley), then you have another terrible freeway to deal with to get to the 405/105 in the first place. Stay on the Hollywood sign of the hills and you probably have until 8. There's an Umami Burger now in Los Feliz where you can watch hipsters along with your burger and there's a pretty odd curio shop (Wacko) and a costume shop (Ozzy Dots) right next door as well as a nice boulevard of shops/bars running up Vermont.

For a great "joint" with awesome breakfast, check out The Brite Spot in Echo Park.

I loved that place. Greatest hangover Saturday food ever.
I used to eat there until we shot there for Cold Case one day and I ran cable through the kitchen... Not that it's excessively bad or anything, I usually don't eat at any restuarant after I've been through the kitchen (I deliberately stayed out of Umami Burger's kitchen a few weeks ago), but for some reason the Brite Spot kitchen struck me as odd. I did enjoy it before that fateful day however. He's Off! the schneid with his new band Off!, but you used to be able to have your dishes bussed by Circle Jerk frontman Keith Morris.

eta: too bad the Echo Park Lake isn't re-opened on schedule. It's just a quick walk from Brite Spot and should be absolutely stunning with all the lotus re-grown and the perimeter spruced up. Recognizable from dozens of movies, including Chinatown.

No one should come here without renting a car.

I haven't read through the thread... how many times has this quote been posted?

Congrats on your luck.

In my three years of living there (border of Hollywood and Silverlake), my experience was -

1. Seeing them kick (literally) an old homeless woman down the road. She was laying against a palm tree in the devil's strip to escape the sun, and wasn't drinking or anything.

2. Called my wife a liar to her face the second day we were there. They pulled her over for some reason. When she showed them her NYS driver's license and explained that she just moved to LA, they called her liar and threatened to haul her in, blah, blah, blah. They ended up just writing her a ticket, but she was balling her eyes out the whole time. The officer laughed at her and told her to stop crying like she was faking the whole thing. She actually thought about moving back to NY after that. We'd been there two days.

3. Heard numerous stories of them targeting friends of color (black, latino, etc.) specifically for harassment, etc.

I quickly learned to avoid them at all costs. If I saw an officer on foot, I would literally cross the street to walk on the other side. Was I paranoid? Would I have been fine? Maybe. But I'd never seen anything like them anywhere else I've lived. I'm sure there's nice cops there, but by and large, they are a messed up organization.

It really depends on what you want to do. Taxis to get everywhere will get expensive quick. Just getting to the Bowl one night and the Fonda another will be a big bill.

If you are looking to lounge around at the beach during the day and eat in the area you'll be fine at the Marriott in Marina Del Rey. It is a relatively short walk to Venice and not much further to Santa Monica. You'll find some good places to eat and can hang out enjoy the sights, shop and just generally relax.

If you are looking to go out an do/see stuff you will really need a car from MDR. Stuff is just too spread out and you won't be real close to a lot of stuff.

If you are set on not driving I would pick something closer to a metro rail line. That can get you to the Bowl and the Fonda and a number of attractions. You wont be able to get to the beach as easily though. Looks like downtown is the only other marriott option that is metro close. The JW at LA live is great. Downtown can be a little dull but you'll be able to get a lot of places via metro.

Let us know what stuff you want to do while you are in LA and I'm sure everyone here can help you plan a good 3 days.

I'm white and live on the west side, maybe they're different here. Some of the other stuff doesn't surprise me, but odd about the situation with the license. I lived here for years using my Iowa license and plates and when the cops always asked me how long I lived here and I always lied and they said nothing.

There's a Courtyard in Century City which is probably the most central location if you want to go to the beach as well as Hollywood area. It'll also keep you off the freeways most of the time.

Going to LA for vacation 6/22-6/28. Will post my itinerary here tomorrow and would love some feedback...I'm 25, this is the first vacation I've been on since I was a kid, and I'm taking my girlfriend of 5 months, so would like to have a solid gameplan. Fortunately, she's doing most of (read: all of) the planning, and I think is splitting it up where we alternate "beach" days with "sightseeing" days...

We're flying in on Friday and staying in Marina Del Rey, then getting a car on Monday and heading up to the Ventura Beach Marriott. I figured that with the hassles and cost of parking that it would be a wash when it came to taking a cab to the Hollywood bowl. All the other shows we're going to we will have a car for. However, due to advice in this thread I have extended the rental to my arrival date. We are not big party people, MDR may be fine for us, heck, we like Solana Beach in North San Diego County, that's a pretty laid back place, but now that we have a car the first 3 days I'm wondering if we should stay at Manhattan Beach or MDR. We're heading up to Ventura Beach to be close to the Santa Barbara Live Oaks festival and to take Day trips to Wine Country. we're also going to spend a night in Cambria. That's the outline, we haven't really filled in the blanks other than the 4 concerts. We have always wanted to see a concert at the Hollywood bowl, if anybody has any suggestions on parking there, it is greatly appreciated. We love the beauty of the California coast, little beach towns (are there any left?), we're really not into amusement parks or night clubs (although the wife keeps mentioning Disneyland, and I keep telling her it's not all that) We like good food, but not necessarily fancy schmancy restaurants unless there is a view involved. Any thoughts/advice are appreciated......Thanks

If you like ethnic food, you're in the right city. Lots of fusion too. L.A. doesn't really have a special signature dish, it just does a lot of things really well.

Manhattan beach on a weekday around noon is money. Park on Highland Ave. (around 30th St.) for free and walk down to the sand.

Hey Class Dismissed [stupid quote function].....

Stay in Manhattan Beach instead of Marina del Rey. MDR pales in comparison. If you can afford it, Shade is a nice little boutique hotel which is super convenient (next to everything). But pricey. She should dig the downtown area (where Shade is located) and the pier and beach and stuff. If Shade is too pricey, grab one of the little beach hotels north of the downtown area (Manhattan Beach Blvd) and just walk along the strand/beach to downtown - it's a nice stroll along a beautiful beach which blows MDR away. I can't remember the names of the two little hotels but they are on Highland, like 10 blocks north of downtown/MBBlvd. Sea View, is one of them. And do not stay on PCH/Sepulveda, it is further than it looks from everything and not worth it.

The Strand House is a good restaurant with an incredible view but there are plenty of others to choose from. After a downtown excursion, your next mission should be to walk north on the strand and check out El Porto. Panchos for Mex, or even divy El Tarasco, but there are plenty of other options. That area doesn't have the flare or whatever of downtown MB and is more local, which seems right up your alley. Yeah, come to think of it, Sea View will offer you guys the best of both and for the right price, all the while being right in the middle of a cool, little beach neighborhood - and not some big hotel/scene/rat-race. If you were into north county SD, you will like Manhattan a lot more than crowded, touristy Marina del Rey, no question. I would also recommend renting bikes and going south to Hermosa Beach...and keep going to the Redondo Beach Pier, if you're up to it.

Plus, you can still check out Venice and Santa Monica on your way up to Ventura, but it's not exactly the "little" beach type town you seem to be looking for..

Congrats on your luck.

No offense but I doubt the first two happened the way you describe. You're Canadian, you were probably distracted and offended that they didn't walk your dog, rotate your tires and buy you a six pack of Kokanee.

As for #3, pretty much all cops (and people in general) profile, it's not unique to Los Angeles.

Have you guys been to Manhattan Beach Post? All my foodie friends rave about it but I haven't found time to check it out.
I have not, but I'm actually heading to MB this week for a dinner at The Strand House.

if anyone is visiting and will be in the Malibu area, it's a good time of year to hit up Paradise Cove. it's a restaurant right on the beach, with good (maybe a bit overpriced) food and lots of eye candy. you can hit the beach, sit outside and drink, have a nice sit-down meal inside, lots of options... you can even just sit at the bar and watch the parade of girls in bikinis walking by going to the restroom.

the coconut shrimp is ridiculous.

My girlfriend put together a (very) preliminary itinerary for our vacation and I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Plane lands at noon on Sat. June 22 and we fly out at noon on Fri. June 28. We're staying in MDR and will have a car.

Saturday

  • Nothing planned yet (we're off to a great start)
Sunday: Venice Beach / Santa Monica

  • Question: Does it make sense to squeeze both of these into a day? Is there enough to see at each location to split these up?
  • Thinking of renting bikes and biking to Venice Beach. Check out the boardwalk / canals / graffiti wall / bball courts. Maybe lounge around the beach.
  • Ride bikes up to Santa Monica, check out the pier and lounge around on the beach there as well.
  • Will probably grab dinner and drinks in Santa Monica (Penthouse/Lobster Pot/Shangri La recommended above), but that may not work out well if we bike up there, so potentially head back to hotel and dine elsewhere.
Monday: Rodeo Drive / Hollywood

  • Head to Rodeo Drive, shop / explore Beverly Hills
  • Drive to Hollywood Blvd and check out the walk of fame, kodak theater, chinese theater, etc.
  • We have tickets to Jimmy Kimmel Live and check-in time is 4:30 -- was suggested to me that we get there around 3-3:15pm. Not clear when we'll get out of the viewing.
  • Dinner and club night in the Hollywood area (where?)
Tuesday: WB / Echo Park / Dodgers

  • Drive to Burbank for an early WB Studio tour
  • Drive to Echo park, grab food (Brite Spot?) and explore.
  • I want to add Dodgers Stadium to the list of parks I've been at, so will get tickets to their game against SF at 7.
  • Would like to grab dinner / drinks after driving back from Dodgers stadium. Not sure which area, but maybe at one of the rooftop places mentioned in posts above
Wednesday: Manhattan Beach

  • As per a suggestion listed above, bike/drive to manhattan beach...will probably make this a full beach day of lounging in the sun.
  • Need to figure out nighttime activities
Thursday: Museums and exploring

  • My girlfriend likes art, so we will do Getty Center or LACMA (or both? Are each of these a full day event?)
  • I would really like to check out the Griffith Observatory, but unfortunately it's closed on Mondays which is when we'll be in the area. Just looking at google maps, maybe we could go here after LACMA?
  • Again, need to figure out nighttime stuff.
Friday

  • In hindsight, I already wish I booked a later flight for Friday, but it is what it is...Can't really do much on this day with a noon flight.
So that's the (very) preliminary itinerary. We obviously don't know / haven't researched good restaurant / drink spots, so would appreciate any input on that as well as general feasibility from a time perspective. Thanks!!

Chill out dude. I live in SM. I know quite a few good restaurants not on the promenade. I was just saying if someone from out of town thinks they're going to dinner in SM and its not really in SM it could screw up their schedule.
it's 3.1 miles from the center of SM. you're right, it would really screw up someones schedule.

So that's the (very) preliminary itinerary. We obviously don't know / haven't researched good restaurant / drink spots, so would appreciate any input on that as well as general feasibility from a time perspective. Thanks!!
