Texans Off-Season thread (1 Viewer)

Wow. I've been calling for his head as he's been a huge disappointment since we signed him, but I never thought they would cut him without a replacement already in the fold. It's not like we are getting much of a cap savings this year by cutting him (but it does free up a nice chunk of change next year.) They must either have a FA in their sights or came away very impressed with the DE prospects after the combine.I'm sure some people will bring Peppers up even more now, but that just doesn't seem very likely at this point.
While I think that the Texans will probably address DE in the both FA and the draft, was Weaver really any better than one of the Texans' Joe the DE (Bulman, Cochran, Nadding)?

Better enough to start all but 2 games the last 3 seasons, but that's not saying too much. Weaver was okay to average at playing the run but showed little ability to rush the passer after we signed him. He also cost far too much money. They may be able to just sign some mid-tier DE FA and have them contribute a lot more than Weaver but until we see what they do, I think every mock draft should pencil in the best available DE into our slot.

I am posting tthis rumor from a TV news cast that I did not see, but has been reported on the Texans message borads. Apparently Jacoby Jones is being shopped for a draft pick per Bob Allen.

With the Sage trade talk, and you not having a 3rd QB rostered, do you believe QB is a need via the draft?

I've said it before, I think the Texans have spotted their guy at the combine and I'm sure he knows most of the offense already. I won't say his name cause i dont want to jinx it.

This makes sense with all of the wr/kr/pr in this draft. Jacoby just makes too many dumb plays.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Texans go with Nall as the backup, and possibly sign someone else to compete for the backup spot. I also wouldn't be surprised to see them take a late round QB, they've done that in years I didn't think we needed a QB. But I don't think they should be taking one in, say, the first 4 rounds unless a real value falls to them that is much better than the players available at other positions.

If Salaam is being cut they must be impressed with how well Duane Brown did as the year wore on. Considering he was platooning occasionally, I'm somewhat surprised at that.

The Texans extended the highest possible restricted free agent tender ($2.792) to Owen Daniels.

Analysis: One of the league's brightest young tight end talents, Daniels caught 70 passes last season, the fifth most in the league at his position. He'll be safe at this tender. The Texans will now focus on signing him long term.

Per rotoworld.........and this is great news for Owen Daniels, Matt Schaub, and the Texans. Now get him signed for a few more years.

Albert Haynesworth hit the free agent jackpot Friday morning by reaching a seven-year, $100 million deal with the Washington Redskins that could end up maxing out at at $115 million based on his performance, according to sources.

The deal, which was reached early Friday morning, includes $41 million in guarantees. During the first 13 months of the contract, Haynesworth will earn approximately $32 million.

This may be the best Offseason move for the Texans. Matt Shaub has to be excited about this.

Eugene Wilson contract details

'just got off the phone with a source close to the situation who has informed me that the Houston Texans have just re-signed free agent free safety Eugene Wilson to a 3 year contract worth $11.2 million with $3.85 million guaranteed.

Wilson spent the first five years of his career with the Patriots before signing with the Texans prior to the 2008 season. He racked up 63 tackles and 2 interceptions last season with the Texans."

Bruce Matthews hired as an offenseive coach

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/6284388.html

Bruce Matthews, who played 14 of his 19 seasons for the Oilers and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has been hired by the Texans as an offensive assistant coach.

Matthews, who has known coach Gary Kubiak since they were teammates at the 1983 Hula Bowl, begins his coaching career at the ground level.

“We’re thrilled to have Bruce be part of our staff,” Kubiak said today. “Not only was he was one of the greatest players in history, I think the world of him as a person, too. I think it’s a great thing for the fans of this city to have one of their own be part of our organization.

“Bruce said he wanted to get into coaching and do the grunt work so he can learn from the ground level. We’ll give him a lot of things to do, including a lot of work with our running game preparations. We’re really excited about giving him this opportunity.”

The Texans don’t need Matthews as an offensive line coach. They have assistant head coach/offense Alex Gibbs overseeing the offensive line. They also have offensive line coach John Benton and assistant offensive line coach Frank Pollack. You can be sure, though, that they’ll want to draw on his expertise as one of the greatest offensive linemen in history.

Matthews, who grew up outside Los Angeles and starred at USC, was the Oilers’ No. 1 pick in 1983. He went to 14 consecutive Pro Bowls, tying the NFL record. He helped the Oilers reach the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons (1987-93). After the Oilers moved to Tennessee, he played five more seasons.

“I can’t tell you how fired up I am about this,” Matthews said. “I love Houston, and I wanted to stay in Houston, and this gives me a chance to do that. I’ve been watching the Texans, and I think they’re on the brink of something special. I wanted to be part of it. I’m excited about where Mr. (Bob) McNair and Gary have this team headed. I want to help any way I can.”

Since his retirement, Matthews has been helping bring up his seven children, including coaching his sons. He’s been working as an assistant videotape coordinator at Elkins High School games.

“I’ve always had a passion for coaching,” he said. “I wouldn’t trade the experience of coaching my sons. This is the right time with my family for me to try coaching on a full-time basis. I think I have a lot to offer. I can’t wait to get started.”

A league source tells us that the Houston Texans have agreed to terms with tight end Joel Dreessen.

Dreessen, a three-year veteran, has accepted a three-year, $3.6 million contract.

He appeared in 16 games last year, starting three of them.

The bigger target at tight end, obviously, is Owen Daniels. The Texans have tendered the restricted free agent at the highest possible level, requiring any team that signs him to surrender a first-round and third-round draft choice.

Anyone in Houston here anything about an Antonio Smith visit yet?
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/6284444.html
Arizona defensive end Antonio Smith will be the second unrestricted free agent to visit the Texans. Smith follows Denver quarterback Patrick Ramsey, who arrived Friday.

Smith, 27, will meet with the Texans on Saturday at Reliant Stadium. He's being pursued by the New York Giants and Tampa Bay, among other teams.

Smith, who played at Oklahoma State, started at left defensive end for the Cardinals. The Texans have a vacancy at that position after releasing Anthony Weaver this week.

Looks like Josh McDaniels thinks that David Anderson is some version of Wes Welker

Houston Texans WR David Anderson, a restricted free-agent, has received an offer sheet from the Denver Broncos. The Texans have seven days to match or he will become a member of the Broncos and they will receive a seventh-round pick as compensation.

Got the numbers for the contract from chron.com not that much different for the amount Dressen got. If they want him, anderson will be a Texan.
In a surprising move, Denver signed receiver David Anderson, a third-year restricted free agent, to a three-year, $4.5 million offer sheet that includes a $1 million signing bonus. The Texans have a week to match Anderson’s deal or let him go and get a seventh-round pick in return.

Rotoworld reporting the Texans have just inked Antonio Smith to a 5 yr 35 mil (12.5 guaranteed) deal.....

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpag...NFL&id=2840

Hope it doesn't turn out like Anthony Weaver. It's a lot to pay a guy with 3.5 sacks last season, although he appeared to be a pretty good player when I watched the Cards last year. Should free us up as far as the draft goes, although if we go OLB I'd love one that could pressure the QB and blitz like a madman. I'm really tired of watching a virtually non-existant pass rush, the more guys we get that can create havoc the better.

Texans signed DE Antonio Smith to a five-year, $35 million contract with $12.5 million in guarantees.Smith, an excellent fit as a pass rusher opposite Mario Williams, can thank his strong playoff performance for the massive pay raise. He emerged as a dominant force down the stretch, so there's some concern that it was contract-year push. The Texans can now turn their attention to outside linebacker and secondary in the draft. Texans sign defensive end Smith to 5-year deal

Free agent QB Orlovsky visits with Texans today

By JOHN MCCLAIN Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle

Feb. 28, 2009, 2:35PM

The Texans have signed Arizona defensive lineman Antonio Smith to replace Anthony Weaver at left defensive end. Weaver was waived earlier this week.

Smith, 27, spent his first five seasons with Arizona and started for the Cardinals in their Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Smith came to Houston on Friday night and spent Saturday meeting with Texans coach Gary Kubiak and his assistants while general manager Rick Smith negotiated a five-year, $35 million contract with Antonio Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Of that, $12.5 million is guaranteed.

Meanwhile, Dan Orlovsky is the second free agent quarterback to visit the Texans.

Orlovsky, who started for Detroit in the Lions' 28-21 loss on Oct. 19 at Reliant Stadium, follows Denver's Patrick Ramsey, who was in town Friday and today. Orlovsky will visit today and Sunday.

In his start against the Texans, Orlovsky completed 12 of 25 passes for 265 yards and one touchdown. For the season, he threw for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions while splitting time at quarterback with Daunte Culpepper.

Really excited about the Antonio Smith signing. Think it really let's us go BPA in the draft.

I hope that next up, the Texans kick Sean Jones' tires. See how much he wants and if it is reasonable sign him. When he is healthy he is an above average starter.

With the Smith signing, I really think Maclin gets drafted if he is still there. Just a hunch.

I like the signing of Antonio Smith for HOU. It was either him or Chris Canty that I would have like to have had, at least we got one of them.

I hate when I hear stuff like this thoughJenkins could fall out of the top 10 following his subpar showing at the combine. He's still an outstanding all-round defensive back, but his below-average speed and questionable burst out of his backpedal might make him a better fit at free safety in the NFL. Regardless, the Saints would welcome his playmaking skills at either position if he falls in their lap.

I wouldn't mind Sean Jones at all...Maclin would be interesting, although I'd love an OLB like Cushing. I'd assume Jacoby Jones would be shown the door if Maclin was the pick.

Reportedly they are currently shopping Jacoby.

I still can't believe they got Antonio for that money. Who would you rather have, a horrible Dominique Foxworth or Antonio Smith. I know they play different positions, but Smith is a much higher caliber player, IMO.

I am surprised as well, just hope Antonio's play wasn't because he was in a contract year and will regress.

Yeah, he looked like a good player to me last year. I was surprised he only had 3.5 sacks because he seemed to make his presence known when I watched Arizona.

What moves do the rest of you Texans' fans hope they make here before and during the draft?

HOUSTON - FOX 26 Sports has learned the Houston Texans signed free agent quarterback Dan Orlovsky.

A fifth round pick out of Connecticut by the Detroit Lions in 2005, Orlovsky played in only two games during his first three years in the NFL.

However, 2008 was a break-out year of sorts for the 25-year old quarterback.

Last season Orlovsky played in 10 games, starting seven. He threw for 1,616 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

In 2008 Orlovsky had a quarterback rating of 72.6

The Texans developed a need for a back-up at the position after trading Sage Rosenfels to the Minnesota Vikings for a 4th round draft pick.

I think I'd have preferred Ramsey.I also think the need of a later round QB may have gone up. Though they could still sign someone to compete for the backup. They have shown a willingness to bring in extra QBs before and then let the ones go they don't plan to keep.

I was prepared not to be excited. The NFL does not have 32 quality starters to spread around, so getting a back-up even a little something to him is fine with me. The best news with Orlovsky is that at 25, one should think he has not played his best football. I don't remember us jumping for joy over Sage three years back.

I like the Orlovsky signing more than I would have a Ramsey signing........and agree with ya fully coolnerd, the best part is that Dan is still a young man and has plenty of room to learn & get better.

So far the Texans have gone 2 for 2 with Smith/Orlovsky signings and they aren't breaking the bank to get them.

No way. Orlovsky is much better than Ramsey. Great move by the Texans.
 Orlovsky is 26, and has solid experience as a starter for an NFL team in which he showed he could lead an offense. Is he guilty of the boneheaded play of the year? Yep. But he is a solid backup qb who can be an adequate starter with the potential to improve.

It's going to be key for the Texans to find a QB who can stay healthy since Schaub just can't cut it. You can't win in the NFL if your QB can't stay healthy and play for the entire season. It's a shame because he has the talent but can't stay injury free.

Not many QBs have the knees to withstand
without getting injured. Schaub has been the victim of some flagrant cheapshots the past two seasons that have cost him valuable starts.

Benson is going in for a visit. This is great news for the AJ owners as they will be in a passing down every play after Benson carries.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/6288717.html
After signing defensive end Antonio Smith and quarterback Dan Orlovsky, the Texans are bringing in running back Cedric Benson.

Benson, who was Chicago's first-round pick before the Bears released him, played last season for Cincinnati.

The Texans are looking for a backup running back behind starter Steve Slaton.
