Thanksgiving Football (1 Viewer)

While there's never such a thing as a bad football game - Thanksgiving football is getting pretty close.

It's a bit like waiting all summer for the first preseason games, and then you sit down to watch some if and you remember - oh yeah, these games aren't very good.

Detroit and Oakland are certainly big factors, but it's hard to recall the last compelling game played on Thanksgiving.

imagine if they just picked better matchups. how about a good afc team at the cowboys? that seems to be the biggest problem. i have no problem with cowboys and lions being on. tradition is good. but make the game competitive with two GOOD teams in the cowboys game.

and having the packers play the lions at least is a division game, so there is something there.

unfortunately, i'll be stuck at work tonight and wno't be able to see the best game of the day - broncos-giants.

I'm hoping that it will change. The current schedule rotation is up after this year, and there were rumblings of having Thanksgiving incorporate different teams.

Why would they pick Oakland for the Thanksgiving day game ? The person who decided that should be removed quickly.
One of the two teams must be hosting an AFC team to give the game to CBS.So it is either DAL vs. AFC West or DET vs. AFC North. That's all they had to pick from - 4 games - as only two of them are home contests.I think they also try and alternate Detroit for each network.

surprisingly the cowboys are only 5-4 this decade on thanksgiving (about to be 6-4). really thought for a good team that would be more of an advantage to play at home with the short week.

They need to dump the tradition of it being a certain team.

Simply having football on Thanksgiving is enough tradition for me.

Agreed...and I like the tradition and all...but would be nice to see a Thanksgiving game in Lambeau...or In Pitt...New England...Giants.

I haven't watched a minute of one game yet. I'm hoping the Giants v Broncos game will be better than the crap the NFL threw at us earlier today.

Dallas plays San Diego and New Orleans this year. Why not make one of those the Thanks Day game? Because they figure they've got a captive audience I guess.

I would have preferred they just replayed the Detroit/Cleveland game from last week. Three times in a row. Even knowing what was gonna happen would have been more exciting than the garbage today.

I think the only fair solution is to officially move Thanksgiving to Sundays.
Joking aside, three days between games leads to some sloppy games especially on special teams and defense. I can remember some good games on Thursday late in the season, but I can't remember too many games where really good football was played. One thing the NFL could do is shift a bye week for the 6 teams playing on turkey day to the Sunday prior. Lots of calculations would have to be done but I think you'd see better football.

I donno, I benched Romo in two leagues, and now I'm hoping it doesn't bite me in the ###. Really, a lot of players had good stats today. Rodgers, Romo, Driver, Austin, Witten, Smith, Marshall, etc.

1.) Dallas is playing at New Orleans, the Thanksgiving game is always a home game for Dallas.2.) Dallas and Detroit rotate being on CBS and FOX. Since they're both NFC teams (FOX), that means the team playing on CBS has to play an AFC team. Since it's a home game, that leaves 2 options for the team playing on CBS - the two AFC teams they play at home. For the Cowboys this year, that was the Raiders and the Chargers. Obviously the Chargers would have been a better option but I think someone mentioned they're playing on XMas Day this year, so it would be unfair to ask them to play on two holidays.

They should make the schedule as usual and starting week one you can vote on nfl.com for the 3 games to air on Thanksgiving/week 12.

You could have had Baltimore/Pitt. and N.E./N.O. while stuffing yourself. How awesome would that have been?

Deion apologizing on NFL Network for the stinky games today
Did he also apologize for Deion Sanders?
yea, Deion was extra annoying. he proves that, just because you played in the NFL, it doesnt mean you should be an NFL analyst.

Getting back on topic, Todd Archer from the Dallas Morning News has an interesting insight on next year's possible matchup for the Cowboys-

As the Cowboys enjoy the weekend off, let's try and figure out which team will visit Cowboys Stadium next year on Thanksgiving.

First, the game will be on Fox, so we know it's an NFC team. Next year the Cowboys will play home games against Chicago, Detroit and a corresponding team from the NFC South as well as NFC East foes, Washington, Philadelphia and New York,

We can exclude Detroit since the Lions host their own Thanksgiving Day game. Chicago played the Cowboys in 2004, so I'd think they'd be out, too.

That brings us to the NFC South. If the Cowboys finish first, then they'd play New Orleans at home. I'm thinking Fox would like a Tony Romo vs. Drew Brees/Sean Payton game after some real stinkers on the holiday. But if the Cowboys don't win the NFC East, then they'd match up with Atlanta (that could be a draw), Carolina or Tampa Bay, who visited in 2006.

On to the division foes. The Cowboys have played Washington six times on Thanksgiving, the most frequent holiday opponent. They have played the Giants and Eagles just once. Since the Giants had to play on Thanksgiving this season, I'd rule them out. So it's down to the Redskins or Eagles from the division.

The last time the Cowboys played a division game on the holiday was 2002 against Washington. Maybe that streak ends in 2010.

But if the Saints and Cowboys match up as division winners, that would be my guess.
