The 100 Greatest Classic Rock Albums of All Time: #1. Sticky Fingers (1 Viewer)

But any Bowie is an acquired taste.

This is very true. I appreciate Bowie, but never really liked him much. Just doesn't hit me like some others do, and I can't explain why.
ditto
For whatever reason I've always enjoys music with band names as opposed to solo bands like Bowie, Sting, etc. Seems like the guitar and drums often take a back seat when you have a main headliner.

Yeah, every time I commit to doing a deeper dive into Bowie's music I end up throwing in the towel early. I think some of his stuff is incredible, bordering on genius. But there is a LOT of yuck in there too.

I think Tim has the right album for sure.

Bowie May be a musical genius but very few of his songs do much for me. He is another of those artists that people think they should like because it makes them cool. Would not make my top 100.

Suffragette City was the song that got me into Bowie. Unfortunately, I didn't get that far into him and I also think his career hasn't survived in the cultural ether like some of the other classic rock bands have. He's now a critic's artist because they understand the time period he was working in, and the chameleon-like changes to his career were more appreciated by the reading and comprehending set rather than the listening set, maybe.

That whole thing is a huge maybe except for the personal anecdote. I'm just addressing some of the things said upthread.

Not a Bowie fan at all, but even cognizant of that bias, I feel comfortable saying this is a very strange choice. I have listened to a lot of classic rock radio in multiple cities over the year (albeit all in the Midwest) and I can't recall ever hearing a Bowie song except maybe "Rebel Rebel." (not counting "Under Pressure," obviously). Certainly never anything from Ziggy.

I don't think it helps that some of Bowie's classic rock staples are average/blah tunes. Okay, Space Oddity is awesome, as is anything from Ziggy that got played on the radio, but Changes and Fame are both more annoying that good, and Rebel Rebel is merely solid. Hearing those staples for years is probably why I never dug deep into Bowie's catalogue until I was well into my 30s.

6. Fleetwood Mac- Rumours (1977)

Classic rock radio hits: Dreams, Don’t Stop, You Make Loving Fun, The Chain, Go Your Own Way, Gold Dust Woman

Almost the equivalent of a greatest hits collection for this band. Although the songs listed above have been in steady rotation ever since classic rock radio started, you might hear every other song on the album from time to time.
As I mentioned on my previous review of these guys, this is what happens when you combine a good rhythm section with 3 of the eras greatest songwriters, all at the absolute height of their powers.

Second Hand News
Lindsey shows off his pop skills. Extremely catchy opening to the album.

Dreams
One of Stevie’s signature songs. Deceptively simple, this is really a quite brilliant musical composition. Taylor Swift has cited this song (and the artist) as her biggest inspiration for her album Folklore (which I personally think is the best record album I have heard in the last 40 years.)

Never Going Back Again
Short acoustic interlude by Lindsay and one of my favorite tunes by him.

Don’t Stop
Among the band’s most famous hits. Christine was ever optimistic, always willing to turn the page. Lindsay’s guitar solo here has always been a favorite of mine.

Go Your Own Way
Another huge pop hit featuring the talents of Lindsay Buckingham. Still infectious after all these years.

Songbird
Gorgeous piano ballad by Christine. After her recent passing it’s often been played as a tribute song. Sob.

The Chain
My teenage daughter was obsessed with song for a while in high school when she decided to choreograph a dance to it. She kept asking me “do you realize how great The Chain is?” Yes darling I do.

You Make Loving Fun
Maybe among Christine’s best compositions. Just an awesome pop rock tune.

I Don’t Want to Know
Fun catchy sing along classic (but aren’t they all?)

Oh Daddy
Christine with yet another pretty ballad.

Gold Dust Woman
Stevie is singing about her enjoyment of cocaine here. But it makes for great rock and roll.

6. Fleetwood Mac- Rumours (1977)

Classic rock radio hits: Dreams, Don’t Stop, You Make Loving Fun, The Chain, Go Your Own Way, Gold Dust Woman
Local CR also played Second Hand News and Never Going Back Again. Between this one and the other one on your count down, Fleetwood Mac got a ton of airplay

I didn't really get into FM's 70 material until seeing the live The Dance special on VH1 in the late 90s, but Dreams quickly became one of my two favorite FM songs (Gypsy being the other). Rumours is very good obviously. I wouldn't personally rank it this high, but I get why many would given how crazy popular it is.

4/5 in my predicted top 10, but some positions off. My predictions revealed so far:

10. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
9. Exile on Main Street - Stones
7. Led Zeppelin II - LZ
3. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

Missed:

Ziggy Stardust - Bowie

Now that I know I missed one, I'll be extremely interested to see which of my predicted top 10 didn't make Tim's top 100.

Rumors is top-notch, beginning to end. Credit to my parents for playing this so frequently I knew all the words at 6 years old.

Agreed that Second Hand News and Never Going Back Again also got plenty of airplay in the NYC area (WNEW, WPLJ).

6. Fleetwood Mac- Rumours (1977)

Classic rock radio hits: Dreams, Don’t Stop, You Make Loving Fun, The Chain, Go Your Own Way, Gold Dust Woman

My stations played everything except Songbird and Oh Daddy. They also occasionally played Silver Spring, the B-side of Go Your Own Way that got new life when it was featured in The Dance. (It was added to pressings of Rumours after the release of The Dance; Nicks was highly upset that it had been cut from Rumours in the first place.)

Oh Daddy is about Mick Fleetwood. Christine McVie wrote it because after everyone's relationships imploded (the McVies divorced, Buckingham and Nicks broke up and Mick Fleetwood and his wife Jenny divorced), Fleetwood's was the only one that affected children, and she wanted to address that.

I picked Gold Dust Woman in krista's Worldwide Countdown. It's the best of an extremely strong collection of songs.

This was one of the nine obvious albums I predicted for your top 10. You rave about Fleetwood Mac all the time so there was no way this wasn't appearing high on your list.

I guess given my experience with much of this crowd in music threads over the years, I shouldn't be surprised at the many of the Bowie takes in here, but I still find them bizarre.

I’m with the crowd - never been a big Bowie fan. Handful of great songs but don’t like any of his albums in full.

Love Bowie. I think Life on Mars? is his best but Ziggy is a great choice. Not better than Dark Side but everyone gets their own opinion--that's why we're here. As for Fleetwood Mac, it is just not for me. Wouldn't crack my top 1000.

And I definitely was biased in my predictions - as @Just Win Baby said, I’m curious to see what Tim excluded - there’s at least one album from 3 all-timers that apparently didn’t make his list.
I’m freaking out a little bit about this. Did I miss something totally obvious? Sure hope not.

Out of the 6 remaining that I predicted, 3 are by one artist. So I'm guessing you left one of those out. Which will really surprise me, that you didn't have one of those in your top 100. Look forward to seeing which one, though I suspect I know which one.

I only see one band that could have more than one album left, and I don’t think they have three albums remaining that fall within the specified date range.

You know it’s 1967-1981, right?

You want a PM or just want to let it play out. There are 3 or 4 that will miss.
Let it play out. Thx

OK, one of my predictions was released in 1966... though I am quite certain it had songs played on classic rock radio throughout 1967-1981. So that must be the issue with my list.

This thread has been playing out for over 4 months. So, I don't understand the current rush to make predictions.
Predictions were all done via PM. It would be bad form to do them in the thread. Even if some choices might be obvious, it is just good manners to let Tim list them when he is ready.

I agree. But some people are constantly alluding to their predictions. For example, "I have 3 in the top 10 from one artist. So one must not be on Tim's list".

So? What difference does it make, i.e., why do you care? Those 'people' are not spoiling anything by stating their predictions in advance.

Also, by 'constantly', apparently you mean two times... which means you and I probably have a different definition of 'constantly'.

IMO Rumours is one few albums whose immense popularity is totally justified among the general public, critics, and other musicians alike. It's just an amazing accomplishment by a deeply fractured band that somehow managed to pull it all together.

Being 14/15 and pretentious as hell, I did not like Rumours when it came out. I didn't understand what they were singing about, because the were adults singing about grown-up stuff and I wasn't an adult. Just seemed like pap to me then.

I'm sure it will surprise absolutely no one here, but I discovered I was an idiot about not liking this record as I got older. It's a masterpiece.

Might as well set my list on fire. I’m an idiot who wasn’t paying attention.

I basically agree. It wouldn't finish high on my list, but I still like it a lot, and if I tried to do a list of the most popular/best classic rock albums based on popularity, known songs, etc., it would certainly be top 10.

Silver Springs would have put the album into another stratosphere, if that’s even possible.

I say all this and I’m not even a huge Mac fan during the Stevie/Lindsay years.

Easy enough mistake to make. Tim listed the criteria for albums to make his list in the 1st post and then it disappeared and was replaced by the list of albums.
I didn't recall the exact date range either.

I’m not a Big Mac fan either but Rumours is incredible. Stevie gets a lot credit for her talent but I’m not sure it’s enough. She is amazing.

She’s definitely the special sauce of the group.

So you prefer Whoppers?

At a girls high school basketball game. Started off with Ozzy for warm ups and then went to AC/DC. All classic rock, zero Taylor Swift.

Not hearing any Beatles either.
Forgot to update, the last song during their warmup......wait for it.......

Van Halen

Yup, even girls not old enough to drive have Van Halen higher than 60.
Maybe your school is different but every team I've coached/worked with it was the coaches or administration that made the warm-up playlists, not the kids. Good chance it was a 50 year old AD who put that together.

Insanity.

Ziggy is an amazing album, start to finish.
