The 2013 K Thread (2 Viewers)

Phil dawson has been a really bad pick so far. Getting no chances. Bad vibes on the sf team. About to go to the wire and find a new kicker, maybe that dude from sea

Rotoworld:

Broncos K Matt Prater currently holds the NFL record for best percentage from 50 yards or longer.
Prater easily knocked a 53-yarder through on Monday night, making him 16-of-21 (76.1 percent) in his career. Kicking for the league's best offense in the thin air of Denver, there isn't a better fantasy kicking option in the game.

Are the Rams going to suck on offense all season like they have the past two weeks? Time to cut Zeurlein?

Jacksonville this week. If there's ever a week NOT to cut him, it's this one. If the Rams (and Fisher) still can't get him opportunities, then he's droppable.

If Zuerlien can't get his against Jacksonville, he is droppable in all formats. Great kicker terrible situation.

I am just shocked at how bad the Rams have been on offense since Saffold went down. I wasn't expecting them to be world beaters but I was expecting a big improvement on offense with the improvements they made on the offensive line.

dropped janikowski mid week and added Crosby :IBTL:

I usually whiff on Kickers so this was a big deal and probably the reason i win week 5. His bye is over, is he startable the rest of the way? 100% this year..

Mr. Herman, any thoughts or comments on who you think the top 5 punters are in the NFL right now?

Same question re: college?

Also, what skills or specific kicks make a great punter?

Thanks.

Answering just the last question for the moment (I'll ponder the first two a little longer)...

A great punter:

  1. Has a strong leg for not only distance, but also height and hang-time so they don't outkick the coverage
  2. Control for directional kicking to the sidelines and coffin corners
  3. Current trend is to also include the Aussie style kick in their repetoire for pinning 'em inside the 20
  4. In most cases: skilled ball handler to serve as holder on placekicks
  5. In some cases: adaptation of items 1 & 2 when they also serve as the kickoff specialist
  6. Last but not least, and just like they say about kicking: punting is 80% mental
If you're perhaps looking to pursue a career in punting, here's a large collection of advice courtesy of last year's senior class:

Alex Henery is killing me since his big 20pt output a few weeks ago. Think he has 10 points for me the last 3 weeks. Think it's about time to cut bait, especially with the Eagles offense struggling.

I am right there with you... keep getting suckered back in. Last week it was, "Well Vick is back, so they'll move the ball... and they're playing the Giants!" Needless to say, I'm out on Henery.

I've been flat out cursed with kickers this year.. .can't manage to find one that delivers 8+ points consistently, much less 10-12+.

Top options on my wire include: Novak, Sturgis, Gano, Gould, Zuerlein...

Not sure why, but I just can't get on board with Novak. Sturgis seems really inconsistent. Gould's offense just lost its QB and could sputter. Legatron is missing kicks now even when he does get chances (which isn't frequently).

Gano is intriguing to me... huge leg, has hit all his kicks this year. As RW pointed out in their waiver column, the Panthers are 12th in scoring offense at 24.3 per game, yet he's 30th in attempted FG -- seems like that should correct itself moving forward, yeah?

Those of you that have been forced to play the wire - who are you rolling with?

Anybody else out there kind of leery about rolling with Hartley or Suisham from this point forward?

Both were solid kickers coming into week 8, but after a week where they both had horrendous misses, not sure I'd be able to bank on either.

Hartley might be more apt to recover due to his team winning and hopefully Suisham can chalk it up to the terrible field conditions. Now I've never kicked at any level, but it does seem like the psyche of a kicker can be easily rattled by just one week of said occurrences. I just know that when I bowl a bad first game, sometimes it's me compensating and overcompensating (and the beer) that causes me to lose my bearings altogether.

Any hope for these 2?

Way less important but something to add, a perfect punter would know how to throw a decent ball too, as every once in a while they need to get rid of the ball because of a bad snap or a trick play.

I am interested to hear some thoughts on using the 2nd waiver priority on Prater in a 12 team league. Crazy? Crazy like a fox?

Anyone know why Kai Forbath wants to kick with Arena League goalposts?
“It just makes you focus more. It’s a small margin of error to get it through there, and it just makes it that much easier when you go back to the big ones. I warm up on those, and then go back to the big ones when we kick field goals with the team.”

- Kai Forbath

Is there a way to find out who has the best touchback % in the league?

My league awards 1 point per 25 yards for D/ST return yards. So I'd like to see which teams are booming it through the endzone and getting touchbacks, so I can avoid streaming the D/ST's playing against them.
