The 2014 K (kickers) Thread (1 Viewer)

I have a feeling that he gets another week because his misses were from 43, 49, and 49. Had they been shorter kicks he would be out the door. He will be on a short leash and I am betting they may trot Martin out to kick longer FG's if it happens early this week. They can't afford to be 0-1 in the division with the way the season is shaping up.

Kicker news from the past few days:

DET - Although Rob Bironas, Garrett Hartley & Alex Henery were worked out, Nate Freese remains the kicker for this week's game

ATL - Matt Bryant's co-specialists, snapper Josh Harris and punter/holder/kickoff-specialist Matt Bosher, both got contract extensions yesterday

DAL - Dan Bailey close to record streak

KC - Cairo Santos assesses game film, believes he found the problem

PHI - Cody Parkey: "I'll hit it again and celebrate it again"

I picked up Carpenter in two leagues. BUF is good enough to get field position and move the ball but not good enough to score often. He should be money from here on out.

Mike, will Kickermania eventually include "rest of the season" and "playoff matchup" forward-looking rankings?
Yes... usually around week 6 or so I start including that

I've done the same. Dropped Bryant for Carpenter
I'm about to drop McManus for him.

Exactly the move I made yesterday. Needed to get ahead of his bye and Carpenter was on the wire.
Carpenter didn't work out. Thoughts on AZ kicker? He's on my wire. So is Pittsburgh's.

Carpenter had one off day and still put up a FG and extra point. I'm starting him over Phil Dawson who has fell from the top this year. I remember getting 10 from him every game, now they are getting better in the end zone. I think the Buffalo offense is exactly what you want around a kicker, good to move the ball, but not good enough to finish in the redzone, like the Jet's kicker on Monday. I think he bounces back against the toothless Atlanta defense in a dome. Any other insights?

Mike? Do you have an opinion on how Denver will handle the kicking duties week 6? Will it be Prater or stick with McManus? Or is it anyone's guess? Thanks

Can anyone tell me when Kickermania typcially adds a rest-of-way ranking? Personally, I hate dealing with the kicker position, and I just picked up Steven Hauschka because someone dropped him over his bye week and the thought of just riding this guy the rest of the way is really appealing to me. Still I'd like to sanity check this decision against Herman's rest-of-the-way rankings to make sure someone else like Cody Parkey wouldn't be a better choice.

Prater is getting cut, McManus has the job
top 5 kicker option the rest of the way? He's already had his bye so you can just "set it and forget it" with him.
If you get bonuses for long FGs, the Denver kicker is ALWAYS a top 5 option.

I just added McManus in all 4 of my leagues. Hated to do it in 2 of them because I had Parkey, but with Denver's bye out of the way, it was too good to pass up.

is mcmanus a good add this week then?
McManus has done nothing so far this season to convince me that he's going to magically become a top five kicker now that he has become Denver's guy going forward, but maybe the three game sample set hasn't told us enough yet? Has anyone watched McManus kick during his college career? Can he hit fifty yarders?

Yes, his leg is plenty strong for 55 even without playing in Denver. He is an out-of-the-end-zone touchback machine on kickoffs. Only concern is that he's been slightly inaccurate (82% in college) and he's never kicked in the NFL in a pressure situation.

That said, I picked him up today and he will have to play his way off of my team going forward. The Broncos have seen every kick he's ever attempted from college through Indy and the NYG as well as hundreds of field goals in practice. They made a bold move which they certainly debated at great length. I am giving them credit for knowing more than any of us and they think he can do it obviously. And remember, they traded for him, which is unusual for NFL kickers. They did so because Philly was reportedly about to make a move for him to shove Parkey out after Henery lost the training camp battle to him.

If he fails, they can cut him and so can we. Its a high-ceiling situation where he is kicking for a high-scoring offense, he has a high-altitude home, and he has a big leg. I'm going to go more off what Prater did with the job (and he was not very accurate himself before last year) than what has happened with McManus in games vs Indy, KC, and @Seattle to start this season. And the bonus is that his bye is gone. He has to be valued as a top 5 kicker right at this minute IMHO.

I find to hard to call him Top 5 just yet, but the biggest benefit it your "set it and forget it" kicker plays for the Denver Broncos. No promise he has a ton of FG opps in a game, but he will have lots of easy shots as Peyton can get him close. As for the under pressure argument, he hasn't had to do it on a game-winner, but that he kicked a FG in Seattle's noise machine means he can take the noise.

Kicking news from weekend's games:

BUF - Dan Carpenter kicks a 58 yard game winner, with opportunity provided in part by...

DET - Alex Henery goes 0-3, now 1-5 in two games... he was just cut moments ago.

DAL - Dan Bailey misses potential winner at end of regulation, but then hits winner in OT

NE - Stephen Gostkowski kicks five field goals

SF - Phil Dawson kicks five field goals, including 52 & 55 yarders

HAM - Justin Medlock kicks five field goals

TOR - Swayze Waters kicks six field goals

CHI - Robbie Gould misses a "chip shot"

I figure if there is anywhere I can ask a WDIA question in TSP it's here.

How do the kicker savvy owners here feel about adding McManus and dropping Parkey. Huge fan of Parkey but he's about to hit his bye. McManus is obviously past his and it looks like not a lot of awareness that McManus is out there and ready to resume the no. 1 kicker job (at least from 2013).

My main concern is that Denver's first few games were not very productive for FGAs, just 1 FGA each game, not great. The Cards game of course was a blowout with several FGAs. If he had hit the long one that was a huge day, not just a good one.

Good idea? Or hold Parkey and try to sneak him back post-bye?

Overall, McManus should be a good acquisition... although Parkey will score more in week 16.

Mike, do you do rest of season kicker rankings? I'd love to have it as a reference when I decide things like potentially dropping Hauschka for McManus.

Karma for the Lions for cutting Kickalicious last year IMO
Tellyawhat, I cannot figure that one out. Maybe Rugland went back home but it seems to me based on what he did with DET he could have been a terrific NFL kicker. He ought to at least be a practice squad project for some team (oh say like the Saints).

Yes, they'll be added to Kickermania starting next week. Raw projections for weeks 14, 15 & 16 were added this week.

Rotoworld:

The Bills are considering keeping two kickers for the 2014 season.
The Bills recently signed Dan Carpenter to a four-year, $9.9 million extension, but used the No. 177 pick of last year's draft on Dustin Hopkins, who missed his entire rookie year with a groin injury. The idea would be to have Carpenter handle field goals and Hopkins man kickoffs. When it comes time to cut the roster down to 53 players, we highly doubt the Bills will have the stones to keep two kickers. It wouldn't be smart.

I am pretty excited about the Saints signing Hopkins to the PS. I bet he might be the kicker next year.

Anyone have any info on him in terms of what he did in college, what he can do, etc.?

Anyway to tee up the 2015 kicker thread, or maybe just change the title to make this a permanent long-running kicker thread we don't lose prior discussions?

Also, any opinions or analysis of Zach Hocker and Dustin Hopkins who will be competing for the Saints' kicker position this year?

Is there going to be a new 2015 K thread?

Really interested in any new names coming down the pike and insights from Mr. Herman?

Fwiw Hopkins and Hocker have been slugging it out for the Saints, Hocker looked great yesterday in the Dome.

Pfft wow, did not know that, disappointed.

Was this the last of the FGS staff threads then? I guess so.
