*** The 8-8 San Francisco 49ers - Let's forget 2014 thread *** (1 Viewer)

As great as he is athletically, it must suck to know that Kaep is mentally incapable of what it takes to win it all.
I've been a Kap apologist.....but he made some really stupid plays today. He was responsible for the field position on the blocked punt as well as the pick 6. Even more mind numbing was stepping out of bounds for a loss and taking a sack instead of throwing the ball away. Worried about stats? My biggest concern through 4 is that we are not seeing the progression I was expecting in reading the D.

Boone is lucky he already got paid. He played like ####.

Brooks is a shell of last year too.
I thought the sack before the blocked punt was on Gore. Two guys came free off the left guard and he whiffed on both of them.
They came off the RG didn't they? Boone didn't pick up the right guy (the inside man). Looney >Boone.
You are right, not sure why I said left. Either way, I don'tthink Kap had a chance of avoiding that one. If the line and Gore do their job we aren't kicking it with our heels on the endline.

I don't think that was on Gore at all. He was expecting Boone to take the inside guy and was set up on for the outside, and couldn't get back around in time to cover for Boone's miss.

Davis going down is going to suck. And Boone looks rough out there.. Kaep is running for his life almost immediately.

Looking forward, I'd hope they play the Seahawks at 7-4 at home:

Chiefs - Have to win this at home, have to

@ Rams - STL has played them tough for the last couple of years, but this STL team isn't anything close to what was being predicted before the season, this is a must win

@ Broncos - Reality, Manning prob throws for at least 300 plus/3, they probably can't keep up

Rams - Must win

@ Saints - I think this will be a must win for NO, and I think they'll get it done, but we can revisit. NO always a tough place to play and they couldn't get it done last year... BTW, why the #### are they playing in NO in back to back years. WTF?

@ Giants - Looking better this year, TBD which Eli they will see. Hopefully the goober version

Redskins - A loss to this team at home will basically get me to throw the towel in.

Seahawks on Thanksgiving.

If they can go 5-2 over the next 7, should be in decent shape at least for a WC spot.

Was telling someone yesterday that Kaep is good for a couple of amazing, take your breath away plays a game, and an equal number of terribly stupid ones. It's not good for my blood pressure.
You can say that again. I was cursing up a blue streak when they took that delay of game penalty in the red zone. How ####### stupid to you have to be to not keep an eye on the game clock? Luckily the defense bailed them out yesterday and they live to fight another day.

Also what's with the Carlos Hyde hype I see in fantasy land? Every time I saw that dude get the ball, he was getting tackled for a loss.

I'm tired of the 4th and 1 play where a lineman reports as TE eligible, Kaep does his hard count and the TE/Lineman stands up to go in motion, hoping to draw the dline offside. I think it worked once 2 years ago, and it hasn't worked since. Everyone knows it's coming now, time to find a new way to draw them offside. Speaking of, I can't remember Kaep successfully pulling a dline offside with a hard count. It's not working, time to shift around the cadence.

Meh, he runs hard and he usually fights off a few before going down. If he has any kind of opening he hits the hole hard and looks explosive. Looks like we finally have an heir apparent to Gore, but people are seriously underrating Gore this year. The way he shifts through the line to pick up every possible yard is a thing of beauty.

Hyde was the victim of some pretty bad blocking on 2 of his runs leading to an ugly average. He's not as patient of a runner as Gore, who is still excellent at getting the most out of a poorly blocked play.

His cadence is terrible. You can see the D linemen just sitting on their butts as Kaepernick bleats out those fake HAAAATs... somebody needs to tell Kaepernick it's a HARD count, not a LOUD count.

Not entirely on Gore but he whiffed on his assignment as well. Was just pointing out that I don't think Kap was in any way responsible for the field position.

Boone had inside contain and let his guy go right by him. Gore's responsibility was the outside blitzer, you can see him head directly that way at snap. Either way, that deep in your own territory, throw the damn ball away.

A day after a pretty nice win, Kawakami says "It's pick-a-side time in 49ersland, folks". Harbaugh vs. York/Baalke/Marathe

How this team could go NUCLEAR, as Kawakami is implying after a nice win like this is: :X

Kawakami is a wanna-be Skip Bayless. I think he gets a hard on every time he's able to get a rise out of Harbaugh.

Seems a bit like he's trying to create the story rather than report on it.

Hey why not, Bayless has made a career out of it.

Kaep is definitely the best QB in the league at wasting timeouts and getting flagged for delay of game.

After reading all the articles regarding locker room tumultuousness, some of them are saying that this is likely Harbaugh's last year in SF. I thought he had another year on his contract? Or are they inferring that he will be lured away by another team or the college ranks due to all of the alleged issues behind the scenes?

He has another year, but, if he's really losing the locker room with another year on his deal do you want him in there for another year as a lame duck coach?

He has another year, but, if he's really losing the locker room with another year on his deal do you want him in there for another year as a lame duck coach?
And therein lies the actual issue... for which I find strangely curious.

If Harbaugh indeed has ridiculous demands of players that veterans find intolerable, why weren't there any whispers of locker room disatisfaction in his first 2 years when he was relatively unproven? I mean he was much less proven as a coach then, and also made an unpopular decision of benching smith for kaepernick. Surely whispers about his patronizing ways would have surfaced at some point during those 2 years?

But it's only after he takes the niners to a superbowl with what looked to be an ascending quarterback in Kaepernick... when Harbaugh's stock was at an all time high (not since Gruden have teams inquired into luring away an active NFL coach with draft picks) that suddenly all the negative stuff started coming out.

Curious timing isn't it? That when Harbaugh is MOST coveted by other organizations that suddenly rumors of incompatibilities with his own organizations should surface. Last season it was problems with Baalke, and some whispers of player discontent after being 1-2. Yet despite what was a purported rift in the locker room that team rallied to go to the NFC championship again... pretty impressive for a team on the brink of implosion.

And so the whispers get stronger again this year. Any time Harbaugh loses a couple of games, the sky starts falling and everyone in 49er land is at war with each other. And yet Harbaugh still remains a coveted prize... How is it that a coach can be so abrasive and difficult to work with, yet be so successful and desired at the same time?

My guess? There are external powers at work that are trying to make sure Harbaugh gets to free agency. Call it a conspiracy theory if you'd like, but in light of the actual facts, that seems to make the most sense.

Sounds perfectly feasible. Care to hazard a guess at the identity(ies) of these EPaW(s)?

Off the top of my head in no particular order...

The Browns at one point, Jerry Jones (Deion connection?), University of Michigan, and the darkhorse... the team across the bay, the Oakland Raiders.

ETA: My guess as to Deion's source?

Michael Lombardi, also previously affiliated with the 49ers, Raiders, and most recently the Browns.... also ex-NFL network employee and according to him, a personal friend of Harbaugh's. Deion has already said that his source is not a player, but a "suit and tie" guy.

Interesting. So where do you think Harbaugh ultimately ends up next season?I'd guess Deion wouldn't feel compelled to tell the truth about his source(s) one way or another. It's just as likely he has been talking to guys in the locker room.

I think there's definitely someone in the Niners' front office who wants Harbaugh out (Marathe?). And as noted above there are no shortage of outside organizations that want this discord to continue so they have a shot at landing him. Hopefully York doesn't handle this like his father would have.

He's still got a year left on the contract. And while the Yorks are cheap and haven't come to terms on an extension in 2 years, they would have to be complete idiots to let him walk away. Getting Harbaugh is the best thing that has happened to the 49ers in this millenium. Right now I would say there's a better than 70% chance he stays in SF.

The only way I don't see him staying is that if there is in fact a rift between he and the GM Trent Baalke. Though if forced to choose, the choice shouldn't be difficult for the Yorks as Harbaugh was the one that took a team Baalke's predecessor assembled and instantly transformed them into superbowl contenders. He's coached the team to 3 pretty successful seasons so far. While Baalke has done ok, he completely whiffed on the 2012 draft.

He's handling it exactly like his father. One GM described Jed after a Owner's meeting: "The more he tries to be his Uncle, the more he is his Father."

BTW, the 49ers are not only far removed from San Francisco, they are also far removed from a San Francisco staple: offense. The passing offense is as bad as Jim Hostler's. That's why Gore is so important: he's still the Bell Cow because he still can carry a crappy passing offense.

I've posted before that Roman IMO only has a rudimentary grasp on the passing game, for all his strengths as a running game coordinator. All this talk about the team needing to lean on the run game has as much to do with Roman's weaknesses as it does the team's strengths.

Agreed, their inability to develop any kind of meaningful screen game with wrs that are capable blockers and rbs that are capable receivers is a testament to that.

And this leads to what I've been harping on all along here: The FO. Which makes all these recent rumors even more scary, that the Yorks think that FO can win with a Dennis Erickson (you guys do remember the coaches they hired, don't you?), or a Brian Billick, or like I pointed out, Jim Mora Jr.

The more the Yorks try to reconcile the former Dynasty to the fans, the more further they move away from it. Heck, the new stadium takes it's cue from Silicon Valley, and if the 49ers go on another ten year losing York era, Silicon Valley will dump them because they dump losers faster than anybody. I've read that it's the most expensive ticket in the NFL now, and being a perennial third or forth in the NFCW will not put butts in the seats in craphole Santa Clara. But maybe then the Raiders can share it.

I know the Yorks are probably thinking David Shaw, but much like the 49ers, his offense isn't that great either, and his defense is the key there at Stanford. That's what they pretty much are, a defensive team, a real good one at that. But the WCO is pretty much gone in the Bay Area now. Which is amazing since Bill Walsh tied Silicon Valley precision to an NFL offense. The irony is the Yorks still live in Youngstown, Ohio. Of course we all know that Walsh built upon Paul Brown's - as well as Al Davis' - concepts of offense. Now, we have Bo Schembechler in Harbaugh.

I don't blame Roman for any of this. Baalke won Exec of the Year the same year the Bengals drafted Andy Dalton and AJ Green. Kaepernick, as much as I like him, is not close to being a pre-snap read pocket passer yet, and the 49ers still don't have a dominant WR. The fact is Roman has made more offense with what he had than any other OC since the days of Mooch. Again, Jeff Garcia put up a 35 TD to 10 INT season on a 6-10 49ers team. Go look up who his WRs were.

See how this is done Kawakami?

Maybe co-owner Gideon Yu can give Larry Ellison a call. Ellison is "retired" now, and all he has done in sport lately is make the BNP Piribas Open almost the 5th tennis major, which is a must on every player's schedule, including the Williams' sisters, who years ago before it was the BNP was involved shunned it while everyone else elected to play in it. I'm hoping Ellison takes over the old Bob Hope Classic since Humana and Bill Clinton is ####-canning it after 2015. Hell, maybe Ellison should buy the Raiders, and share Levis Stadium with Yu. Eventually the Yorks will sell most of the team to Yu's partners and investors, then Marathe can be replaced by another MBA type who like Marathe, had zero NFL experience, and Marathe can create an FF startup.

It will be total Silicon Valley football. D-T-F ratio, Tip-to-tip, Church Candy, Snack #### - we can even use Weisman scoring!

What, no Alex Smith talk with the 49ers playing at KC this week? Where's hornet?

Fangio did a great job against one of the most potent offense in the league against the Eagles, even with big parts of the defense depleted. It will be the toughest defense KC has faced so far this season. Smith's first two games this season were Smith like: 1 TD to 3 INTs, with one of his signature donut hole games against DEN with zero TD passes. On the flipside, he got well in a hurry against two NFCE teams in MIA and NE, both with suspect defenses.

I'm sure there will be plenty of Kaep vs. Smith talk all over the Bay Area media, blogs and such, but the fact is Smith dumps off a short pass to Charles, and it's a 70 yard TD. Kaep has to scramble all the way across the field, then find Gore open all alone to throw on the run and hit him to score one of the very few TD's tossed to an RB in the SF offense.

Should be a fun game to watch. KC's defense is pretty solid, and if the 49ers can't apply pressure against "I never took a sack that I didn't like" sack prone Smith, then Kaep better stay off of Twitter for a month.

People might think there is some sort of "media conspiracy theory(s)" about Harbaugh and the FO situation, but unless you lived under a rock during the York era (and even during the Eddie era), there was always some fire to the smoke coming from 49er HQ. Mike Nolan didn't trust Marathe, and hired a guy to keep tabs on him. Singletary talked of a "rat in the building", which was thought to be Marathe. Marathe sat in the coaches booth during Nolan's last season, supposedly to "help him with the rule book", which was BS.

Now, we have a sort of "power struggle" between a head coach who can write his ticket anywhere, and an unproven GM whose last few drafts are suspect, and prior to becoming GM was also one of former 49er DoP and GM Scot McGlouhan's scouts from 2005 to now GM.

Which means promoted from within. By whom? My guess is Marathe had a hand in it. The other hand is firmly in Jed's pocket. Because Daddy likes Marathe's hands, to which Marathe is Jed's inheritance.

I will be rooting for Alex Smith this week. I did not like him as our QB, but he's always carried himself with class and represented the organization well.

Sad to say its a far cry from many current players who make me cringe.

I've got a couple of KC players on my FF team this year and have seen enough of Smith to say that, well he's still Alex Smith... which bodes well for our chances. As long as the niners can keep Charles contained we should win the game.

But then again, with all the supposed dissonance within the organization, what would cause more havoc internally than to lose to Alex Smith? Seems like the perfect subplot to fan the fires at 4949 Centennial Way.

It's unfortunate but that's the way it's gonna be. Jed says he's trying to make the organization about football, but with Moneyball Marathe around that will never be the case.

If you ever hear the term "Maratheball", that credit who coined it should go to me. Why? Because I asked Billy Beane during a call in on KNBR with Ralph Barbieri (who laughed at that phrase) if "Maratheball" can work in the NFL. Nobody used that term before, or since. Probably since nobody knew or cared who Marathe is. Even Beane didn't know much about him, or so he said.

As far as Jed is concerned: I'm gonna go back and make a little correction to what I posted earlier: I think it was an old school NFL owner who said "The more Jed tries to be his Uncle, the more he becomes his Father".

His Uncle BTW, forced Walsh into retirement, had Carmen Policy as his right hand man and GM.

Carmen Policy

Ask the city of Cleveland about him. Or any old mob guys in the midwest. Rumor is he represented a lot of them in court before Eddie hired him.

Baalke's fast creating a Policy like draft record too.

So we all know the story of why Eddie was forced out of the NFL and then turned to the over to Sis and BiL. Browns fans know the story of the team returning to CLE while unfortunatly having Policy and his minions - who luckily escaped SF - as their FO.

I don't want Jed to be anything but a guy who keeps his mouth and Twitter shut, because the more he opens both, the more trouble he stirs up. He should be more like his Mom, not his Uncle or Father. Do you remember "This is the last time our season ends in December", while announcing Mike Singletary as Head Coach?

ETA: it reminds me of an article I read years ago about Eddie Sr, Eddie Jr, and Denise. It was like, the more Eddie tries to be his Father, the more his Sister is. In other words, Denise is more Eddie Sr like.

That's a reason to root for him other weeks, not for this game.

I kinda favor KC in this, because they have some speed, are at home in crazy Arrowhead, Smith, despite being Smith and facing lesser defenses over the past two weeks has the hot hand at QB, and like I said, KC's defense is pretty solid.

That "humbleness" gave us that many years of Smith instead of Aaron Rodgers. Besides, the 49ers haven't exuded class in ages (see: Mooch getting fired while watching Joe Millionaire, the push for the new stadium, etc).

It's still an away game. Especially since a lot of #11 jerseys will be worn there too.

I need to reset my old RSS feeds, since my Google Now links me to Niners Nations' feeds. It used to be a good site, but since they started sending Fooch free scrunchies and pom-poms, then Fooch bringing in Bleacher Reports dudes to post (I made Vincent Frank meltdown over there, by just simply saying "have another beer nocal"), it's really gone downhill.

I have a great e-mail war archived between wannabe scout Drew Kerr and I. Good stuff. God Bless fan blogs.
