The American Eagle Sydney Sweeney ad (1 Viewer)

As such, yeah, I do kind of think there should be a permissible bit of a double standard here for at least a few decades.
The problem is that by allowing this double standard to continue that it never lets the issue die. There will always be terrible people that are racist but that number is greatly diminished today than it was 5 yrs ago, 10 yrs ago, 50 yrs ago.

I think because of backlash like this it perpetuates the issues when it doesn't have to. There are many situations/ads/etc that come out and I immediately know that there is going to be a backlash even when there shouldn't be. By continuing this "double standard" to try and right a wrong it just extends the issue. I think society would be better served at this point by just letting it go and having things just be equal across the board without the heightened sensitivities that this may mean something bad when that was never the intention. As stated upthread you can find anything if you go about to look for it. I think we need to stop looking for it and just let it be.
Can we settle on maybe white people just shutting up about race (whether their own or otherwise) for a couple of decades? In other words, not touting our "great genes" in ads for a bit?

I mean, we're basically Patriots, Yankees, or Lakers fans at this point where nobody wants to hear from us about how great our "team" is.
Whether or not you realize it, you're doing your best to pick a fight in here.
I realize it, but it's one I believe worthwhile as I find the outrage to the outrage as irrational and myopic as the original outrage. I mean, I perused my facebook feed this morning and there were far more posts by friends outraged by the outrage than there were that were actually outraged by the ad. Granted, my friend demographic is probably disproportionately white/rural and more right-leaning, but still.

I may or may not have had a heck of a long trial week as well that has me in a more combative mood than usual. So, perhaps I am outraged at the outrage over the outrage because I find such to be outrageous. :)

Headed back into trial shortly then traveling for the weekend so I'll naturally bow out of this thread a bit. That said, hopefully there is a point here to be recognized.

I will not be ashamed of being white, no matter how much you try to force it on me no.
Nobody is doing this.

(At least in this thread)

This thread is an interesting case study on human behavior. It's interesting. Its uncomfortable. I've laughed. I've cried. When all is said and done, I don't have any more interest in buying American Eagles jeans then I did before.
I think we found a common thread!

I think everyone should do this. The more it gets brought up by anyone the more it gets perpetuated. That was my point.
Oh. So then you agree that the AE ad was misguided? (Not trying to put words in your mouth, just not understanding your point in the context of the ad).
He's commenting on your comment "white people just shutting up about race". He's not commenting on the ad.

Your question about agreeing that the ad was misguided would rely on the assumption that the ad was about race. If someone doesn't believe it was about race, then a comment that "everyone should shut up about race" doesn't then agree that the ad was misguided.

Someone made the point about if they used another race model - AE could have gotten the same reaction if the rolled out a series of ads. Thats what I would have done.
Maybe, but they didn’t do that, and they chose this particular white girl for certain reasons.

AE’s chief of marketing has literally said that they were trying to be provocative and push buttons with this ad campaign. So the company set out to make an ad that will generate controversy, but everyone in here is saying you have to be loony or insane to interpret it that way.

They picked her because she’s hot
She’s the “it” girl right now

Jesus guys sometimes a cigar is just a cigar

It isn't about buying AE's clothes - It's about making their brand relevant. That brand recognition has value and they are getting so much value out of the various forms of outrage. People are talking about their brand everywhere. 7 pages here alone, among a sector of consumers they haven't been relevant to in decades! It's a brilliant marketing strategy and we're playing right into it.

just to make sure - everyone has seen the full ad with all the quotes, right? She’s literally talking about genes being passed down from generation to generation and how they determine traits like hair and eye color, and then looks at the camera and says my genes are blue, and then it crosses out the word genes and replaces it with jeans. They are laying it on incredibly thick.

I'm just upset now that it wasn't Member's Only who thought this up. The thought of them being relevant again warms the cockles of my heart.

Wait, why have I always assumed you are black? I might be exposing some of my subconscious racism here.

I’m Irish. Grew up in an all black neighborhood (District Heights, Maryland) as the only white kid until my sophomore year of high school where the whites did not accept me.

You thought I was black? So did I until about 12 years old.

Ah, yeah, PG County must have come up in the past and that's where my assumption came from.

Agreed - And I didn't think people were brining up the issue in regards to slavery as a couple posters have alluded toward. Immigration is the target with groups using terms like "poison the blood" or "removing the bad genes from our country". This isn't some 150 year old argument that just got dusted off - it has been front and center.

If we could post pictures I'd post a picture of how these jeans make my rear end look and this thread would shut down. People would go nuts. Great quality jeans at a good price. They make me feel good about myself.

Not at all. I don't think it had anything to do with race and was a clever play on words. I think people are looking for something to complain about that isn't there and perpetuating the issue.

I am not surprised by the uproar but I think it is misguided and only serving to keep bringing race to the forefront when it isn't necessary.

This. Ad company knows they’re going to get a reaction. Whether that reaction is reasonable isn’t the point imo.
Then you have people saying there’s no reason to have expected a reaction and anyone who would expect a reaction is “loony left”

I think we found a common thread!

Granted, I don't think middle aged married men who often extol the virtues of Costco denim are their target market.

I think this all comes down to assumptions about how common it is to instinctively associate the phrase “good genes” with white supremacy. My assumption is very few Americans would have made that connection prior to this story and it is reasonable to have not anticipated this backlash. A few here disagree and think at least a few people on a competent marketing team should have known this would blow up.
meh…

It’s a hot chick in Jeans. If anything, be upset about the blatant sexualization….i’m not, but whatever.

The problem here is there are people who immediately try to tie race into this. It’s preposterous, and should be roundly dismissed by the masses. Instead, it’s given legs, and then impressionable college kids think American Eagle is pro nazi or some ****!

Ok…….I’m going back to ignoring this kind of thing!

I owe you and everyone else an apology. As I am prone to do - I misread/didn’t read the post in its entirety or take a minute to think before flying off the handle.

I did not take the time to even read this part:

“(whether their own or otherwise)”

I would like to humbly change my post to: I agree with everything you said. :bag:

So you don’t think Sydney Sweeney has “great genes?” I’m pretty sure skin tone was not a factor in that declaration.

I think AE’s response should be to do another run of these with a voluptuous woman of color…….But, I’m sure it would stir some more ridiculousness. You just can’t win anymore.

Dunkin getting in on the fun. It's Golden Summer Baby!!
Certain people are trying to manufacture controversy; this tweet demonstrates that, this is what this story is about.
Sure, I agree and the people that are doing that are not doing it in good faith. I know it's sort of a projection of my part since I reject the notion that the AD firm should have known that a good genes/jeans pun could have been mistaken as a pro-eugenics stance or that AE did this on purpose to stir up controversy. I consider myself a rational person so I'm using myself as a baseline.

Of course I think she does. And, of course, I see the innocent pun played on in the ad.

Im am but a humble disaster of a person.

OMG, just look at the instagram feed from this horribly racist, nazi sympathizing, master race inducing company.

A gent of unknown skin tone origin!
A Latin-noooooooooo!
Black dudes!

But, but....You cant hear the dog whistle!!!
I don't know man... wearing sweaters tied around shoulders is sort of a white elitism fashion style
Not sure about that, but it almost certainly increases the odds of somebody wanting to punch the wearer.

The only way I interpret it is they are trying to make money - a tale as old as time. "Sex sells" has been replaced with "controversy sells". Weird time to be alive but I think every time has been weird for different reasons.
